• The top locks while it is operating. It does have a pause button though just in case you forgot something

• Yes load your clothes in, set your water temperature, have your soap in the dispenser and close the lid. The machine with judge the weight of the clothing to determine how much water to add to the machine. If you fill the machine empty, you could end up with too little water for the amount of clothes you are washing.
