• this item has it's own network that uses AT&T or T-Mobile, some models use Verizon and it doesn't matter what service your phone has. Wireless service is needed for this item

• That refers to the Smart Start module itself, which connects to the ATT 3G network. The app on your phone actually uses the internet (wifi or data plan).
