This unit comes with its own GPS antenna just in case your vehicle doesn’t already have one. It uses that GPS antenna input for your location/position, but the rest of the navigation and mapping functions are handled by and dependent on CarPlay or Android Auto from your phone. If you have already plotted a route on your phone via Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, etc. while you have cell service, navigation will continue to work (because of the input from the GPS antenna) when you lose cell service. You just won’t be able to plot a new route without cell service. If you want navigation independent of CarPlay or Android Auto, then you need to be looking at other radios such as AVIC-W6600NEX, AVIC-W8600NEX, etc.
