That is because it doesn't "automatically" display. If you're viewing the main screen, swipe to the left, you will see other widgets including CarPlay. You have to drag the CarPlay widget to the bottom of your screen. If you have too many widgets displayed, you have to eliminate one to make room for the CarPlay to display. Also check the settings in your phone for CarPlay. Make certain that it is set for Auto.
