I read all the reviews and this lives up to the billing. Great picture, 55" is the perfect size. Easy to navigate through the menus. I would highly recommend getting the highest quality HDMI cables. I have owned a Sony Bravia that lasts and looks great for a long time, so I expect this to do the same. I also bought the Yamaha Surround Sound Theatre in a Box which sounds great. I would get it all in one shot and have the Geek Squad hook everything up and explain it. Well worth the money!!

When my wife and I turned on our new Sony 55" 4K Ultra Smart TV for the first time, we watched a commercial with a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich that took up the whole screen. The strawberry jelly was dripping over the sides of the bread and we could see the holes in the bread. My wife and I looked at each other with big wide open eyes and just started laughing. We are both so happy with our purchase, and it came just in time for the Seahawks playoff game. We wish they won, but at least we got to see the clear faces of the players as we watched.

I've had the TV for a couple of weeks now and still have no buyer's remorse. While there isn't a lot being broadcast in 4k yet, I'm sure it will come. In the meantime, the size of the image is a joy. I love too that the physical frame around the screen is so small. There's no clutter, no big box, it's just all screen. I love it.

The Netflix function on the remote only works when it wants to and the TV has issue with staying connected to the WIFI. Other than that, the picture and sound quality is amazing.

I first bought the Samsung 7000 due to being a big fan of Samsung TVs in the past. I got the 7000 home and it had the worst uniformity I've ever seen. Whenever a dark image was displayed all four corners on the 7000 had HUGE white clouds. After digging around online I found out that the 55" 7000 is made with an ISP panel...apparently that means it's bad news. After looking at other sites for reviews on 55" 4K TVs in my price range I decided to give the Sony a chance. Not only is the Sony a VA panel, but it's also true 120hz refresh rate (unlike Samsung that advertises 120 motion rate but is really 60hz). I'm so happy I bought this instead of spending another $400 on the Samsung 7100 (or whatever the next 55" would have been)! This tv is great! While the blacks may not be as deep as other TVs, it's still great. Finally I can watch darker shows without 1/4 of the screen having white clouds ruining the scene. The only issue I have with this TV is that the Soundbar blocks the IR receiver, so until I build a riser for the TV, I'm stuck raising the remote over my head to use it. I've been watching 4K stuff on Netflix and it really is awesome to see how great things should look on TV. Regular cable also looks a lot better than it did on my Samsung LED.

Primarily use this tv for Netflix, Amazon Prime, and console games like XBOX ONE and PS3. Image on the tv is stunning, and colors are rich. Blacks are black. That's always my biggest concern. Watching shows and movies on Netflix are drop dead gorgeous. I still have a hard time believing I allowed myself to watch things in 1080 for as long as I did before switching after seeing things first hand. TV is wireless which is nice, connects to your home network with ease. Comes with 2 remote controls which is a little odd. 1 acts as a traditional remote control, with buttons for play, pause, stop, volume, channels, etc... with a Netflix button prominently displayed in the center of the control. The secondary remote can be used independently without the need for the 1st control with a trackpad style mouse taking up about 40% of the remote controls real estate. Scrolling on the remote is ok. Being an iPad and Macbook user there is definitely less sensitivity on the Sony remote, and takes some getting used to. You have to be a little more rough with it, but it's not terrible. Refresh rate on the TV is great. Haven't noticed any ghosting or blocking while heavy movement scenes take place. Plenty of inputs on the TV with both back and side inputs represented. Having everything source from my receiver I don't really need any more than 1 HDMI, and the optical output on the TV for Netflix so I may not be the best candidate to determine if there really is enough HDMIs, but I think it should keep most people happy. Finally, on the note of brand preference, I consider myself pretty neutral. I have LG, Samsung, and other Sony TVs in the house. So I don't particularly favor one brand over the other, but for this particular TV, I really loved the picture, clarity, color, contrast, and refresh rate that I saw in store. Even more so now watching from home. At the end of the day, it's all about what you like, and what makes you feel good, but you do get what you pay for. So if you buy a sub $800 4k tv you're not going to get the same picture as some of the more expensive models. As for me, I love this TV, and would recommend this to a stranger in a heart beat.

I bought this TV almost a month ago, and absolutely love it! I did a lot of comparing of brands, but kept coming back to this one. It was between this, Samsung, or LG. After a whole lot of comparing, I went with this Sony and I am glad I did. The screen seemed so much darker in the store compared to LG and Samsung, which was why was hesitant about buying this Sony.. After getting it home and changing a few settings, it's perfect! The picture quality has been amazing, and I really can tell a difference with the upscaling. I tried the 3D function just to try it once and watched Spider Man, and was amazed how well it worked. You have to buy the glasses, which was the only drawback. I just got a $20 pair to try it out once, since I am not a huge fan of 3D in general. It worked perfectly. I have an XBOX One and a PS4 hooked up to it, and they look great on this TV. The 2nd touch pad remote takes some getting used to, but it's great once you get used to it. I have absolutely no complaints about this TV, and I am glad I stuck with Sony, a brand I trust. If you are considering this TV, I don't think you can go wrong. Thank you Sony!

    Worth skipping the wait

My original reasoning was to get a nice 1080p to tide me over until 4k content becomes broadcasted on cable tv. After all, I would prefer to watch a 4k Sunday night football game than watching 4k nature scenes on youtube. Then, I thought how long could it take for 4k content on cable tv to become widespread? So I decided to take the plunge. Some reviews have highlighted Sony’s upconversion of 720p, 1080i, and 1080p content as well as blu rays. These reviews on upconversion have lived up to the hype. The clarity, color accuracy, and contrast of the picture are amazing. The blacks are deep on this tv (maybe not oled or plasma deep, but deep nonetheless). The picture definitely needed to be tweaked from when it was first set up. (side note: I got the tv delivery and set up for free with the purchase) For the most part, I used the settings posted on rtings.com and settings posted on avs forums. I found that Cinema Pro mode works best on blu rays, and Custom mode works best for when I’m watching cable tv. I turned down the brightness quite a bit as it washed out the blacks. I don’t see any issues of light bleeding and blooming. The uniformity on grey, white, and black screens is great. The colors can become washed out if you’re viewing the tv from extreme side angles, but I sit straight on, making this a non-issue for me. Overall, I am very happy with my new 55 inch 4k sony tv. The tv is worth the price I paid (got it for even less than the sale price since I told the salesperson I'd buy the 5 yr geek squad protection plan with the tv). It is definitely worth skipping the wait!

    Amazing 4k TV

This is my first personal 4k TV and it's been everything I could have asked for. The picture clarity and color is amazing. I did a lot of research based on reviews prior to purchasing the tv and I was shocked to see all the bad reviews on the tv. People complained that it had a dark picture? Well, compared to a Samsung tv where the brightness and back lighting is jacked way up to make you think the picture is "better" yeah it's a little dark. But the colors look EXACTLY how they should. The clarity, especially when streaming 4k content is amazing, the upscaling is better than any other 4k tv I've seen, and I work in Home Theater for best buy. Another complaint people had was with the Android TV operating system. Personally, I think it's very nice. It's extremely simplistic and easy to use. As long as you let the tv update properly out of the box, you'll have no troubles what so ever with the tv. Love the tv and will continue to encourage others to invest in what Sony is doing with 4k going forward!

Amazing 4K option (for the tech savvy)

As a bit of a techie, I was looking for a 4K TV that didn't break the bank, but had a great image and also great image control. The 55in X850C seemed to fit that and I was pleased to find out that it met, and even exceeded these expectations in a few ways. The setup I use with this TV is a new Sony HT-CT780 Soundbar. Connected to the TV is my cable box, and my PS4 is connected to the Soundbar. I gave this TV 4 stars because of how great it is for the tech savvy. I'll get the negative out of the way first: the 1 star deduction is due to the near-necessity to be "involved" with the TV's tech. Having Android as an OS is cool, but the firmware update is practically required to use any of the 4K applications (such as Netflix), not to mention some menu systems stop working entirely due to a glitch - the updates resolve this, but you need to be somewhat savvy to make sure the TV is hooked up to the web, and downloading updates. That out of the way, this TV is a great option for those who do know what they want and want control out of their TV. Image quality is great, especially due to the Triluminos display. Even without the Dynamic Range feature of the higher end Sony TVs, the image still looks crisp and dynamic with amazing color. Those familiar with Sony know that their upscaling is one of (if not) the best in the industry. The control of the image is really robust too (which is why this set is great for those who know their way around electronics). Deep control over motion blur, image contrast, gamma, backlighting, can also be done on a per-input basis quite easily, easily being able to see your picture adjustments in real time. I was quite happy with this. My "woah" moments I had with this TV is how smart it is in working with other components. It's able to control the Samsung cable box I have flawlessly, and get TV Guide information right in the TV UI itself. And while it MAY be because I happen to have a Sony soundbar and PS4 as well, the TV talks extremely well with the soundbar. Power/Volume/Mute/Inputs are SYNCED (no need to use multiple remotes, any remote controls the volume of both devices simultaneously) and the TV can read all inputs, wether they are hooked up to the TV itself, or into the soundbar. It's really great. I can have everything off, turn on my PS4, and the TV and Soundbar automatically fire up and switch to the proper inputs. As for gaming, the input lag is surprisingly low without even needing to enter a 'game mode' which reduces the fidelity of the image which is something I prefer. The remotes are only OK, my biggest gripe being the traditional remotes D-PAD is quite cumbersome. That said it gets the job done. The new "touchpad" remote I tend not to use, although it is pretty slick to use the mic to say "Watch X movie trailer on YouTube" and have it pull up a YouTube search for the thing you asked for right in the TV itself. The Android-powered voice commands are spot on. I also considered a few Samsung models as I have traditionally gotten Samsung TVs before, but the Sony with the great upscaling and higher reviews online in terms of robust control over the image, the Sony won me over and I'm quite pleased with it. My only advice to Sony would be ensure that new models have proper Quality-checked and working applications and UI features, BEFORE releasing the model and banking on software updates - to ensure those less tech savvy have a better experience out of the box. If you're looking for a premium 4K TV experience at a more affordable price, it's hard to beat this model. If you just want to turn the TV on and use all of the features flawlessly, proceed with caution. Yes this TV is amazing, but as many have noted, you don't get the complete experience (ie. Netflix not working/available) until you go through the system updates. If you don't mind getting into the nitty gritty of Android OS updates and menu-based settings, this is a really REALLY nice option.
