    The Number 23
Upon acquiring a mysterious book in which the number 23 seems to take on powerful cosmic significance, a once-sane man gradually becomes obsessed with the idea that the frequently recurring number may in fact hold a deadly secret in this intense mystery-thriller starring Jim Carrey and Virginia Madsen, and directed by Joel Schumacher. Walter Sparrow (Carrey) is a middle-aged dogcatcher whose wife Agatha (Madsen) has bestowed him with an obscure mystery novel detailing the investigation launched by a tough-talking gumshoe named Fingerling (also Carrey) whose every move seems to be overshadowed by the enigmatic eponymous number. After noting a series of alarming parallels shared between the fictional detective and himself, Walter is quickly drawn in to the story as the hard-boiled private investigator murders raven-wigged moll Fabrizia (also Madsen) and pins the crime on her unsuspecting lover (Danny Huston). Back in the real world, fiction seems to merge with reality as Walter and Agatha's close friend Isaac (also Huston) begins to ingratiate himself ever deeper into the couple's relationship and Walter begins experiencing a gruesome series of visions in which he violently murders an unfaithful Agatha. His mind fast descending into a dark and violent whirlwind of madness, Walter enlists the aid of Agatha and the pair's adolescent son Robin (Logan Lerman) in seeking out the author of the mysterious tome and uncovering the sinister truth behind the so-called "23 enigma." ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Is it Jim or is it the movie?

Even though Jim Carrey gets a bad rap when he tries to stray from his oh-so-successful comedy career, I found his performance to be one of the few things I enjoyed about this movie. I found his haunted performance quite believable, where I could see how such a trivial obsession could become quite overwhelming. Like so many movies these days, however, I felt that the climax of the film came too early which left a too-large chunk of the end dealing with tying up all the loose ends to make it pretty. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather see shorter movies with some loose ends left up to the imagination rather than a longer movie that comes tied up with a pretty bow on it.

      Excellent psychological thriller!!!

My wife and I love this film! We can't figure why it got so many negative reviews. The plot was great, keeps you guessing, and has a great twist at the end. Jim Carrey proves once again that he can do more than just comedy. (He was also good in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.) I can't say I side with everyone elses reviews, but I know I'm not alone in thinking this was a great movie. I recommend watching it and making your own assessment. Also, some other great movies with similar plots are The Jacket, Session 9, The Devil's Chair, and Memento.

Okay but you have to give it time

After the first hour I seriously asked myself outloud what the plot was in this movie. It seemed to be going nowhere. Toward the end there is a key point where you learn something that changes your viewpoint of both the characters and plot. It was not the best movie I have ever seen but it was pretty original and for that I give it credit.

      The Number 23

The number 23 isn't like most movies. It keeps you guessing constantly and you really think about things when you see it--even if it's just you becoming paranoid for a bit after seeing it. I thought this was a pretty interesting captivating film, not like most these days.

I do not generally like Jim Carey how ever this is a pretty good movie. Makes you think, definitely one you want to pay attention to while watching.

      Huge Waste of Time

The movie was very slow and my husband had to be woken up after about the first 30 mins. He did not even finish the movie. The ending was very bizarre, I did not see it coming. Very twisted and very disappointing, the promos made the movie seem really interesting.

      Worst movie of 2007

Lots of things wrong with this muddled mess: bad pacing, sub-par acting, weak story telling, far fetched, boring at times, laughable (in a bad way)'s just not effective. A bad movie and one of the worst (if not THE worst) that I saw in 2007.

      23 huh?

Jim Carrey as a comedian funny. Jim Carrey in this type of movie um no. It's about a man who is haunted by the #23 everywhere he goes. I've never seen a person abscessed with the #23 since Michael Jordan's retirement.
