I wondered what took everyone so long to make a case for the Apple Pencil! I got so used to putting mine back in the box that it came in that I lost it for 6 months because my husband stuck it in my box of Apple boxes. (I save the boxes from all of my Apple devices so I can sell them when I upgrade.) I didn't know this existed until Apple finally made a leather tube basically to keep the pencil in. I was slightly excited but it still didn't seem like it would protect, or that it would come apart...according to reviews I was right.
That left me checking around for other cases, there was this, and another Belkin case that is cheaper but it's made of some type of fabric or something and the pencil doesn't seem like it would stay secure, one drop and that thing is going to go flying. Honestly, one drop with this and the same thing is probably going to happen but at least with this I can probably lean against the case and not have to worry. With the other I'd have to be SUPER careful no one bends my Apple Pencil.
This thing has a removable magnetic lit, it's not on a hinge. Doesn't matter to me either way but a hinge would be better in my opinion, then you don't have to worry about dropping or losing the lid. There is a sliding door for the tiny accessories, which is super nice. I was keeping those tiny accessories in a tiny neoprene zipper bag that came with one of my Qalo rings, it did the job but it was also so tiny I was always losing that too. I LOVE that they are not just sitting in the case, they have that sliding door for extra protection so if you do drop the case or it comes apart in a bag the small accessories are not going anywhere. There's even a notch at each slide for each accessory though I was playing with it and it's really difficult to get it to stop at each notch, it kind of keeps going so you end up opening up to the next accessory. Not a huge deal but would be cool if it actually stopped a little harder at each accessory.
I probably won't use the stand portion because I don't ever use a desk, I always use my iPad while sitting on my bed or couch so the stand won't really be of much use to me but if I am ever in a position that I am at a table or desk then it will definitely be handy!
Overall, I think the case should have a hinge, I wish the notches were a little deeper when sliding the accessory door open, and it would be nice if it were a little bit smaller. The bag I carry my stuff in is pretty big so it's not a problem but I have a much smaller bag that fits both my ipad, my macbook and a few smaller accessories and this case will not fit in it at all so I won't be able to ever use that smaller bag and carry this with me. Overall, not a huge deal because this is better than the box that the Apple Pencil came with! It's a touch pricey, would be better at say a $20-$25 price point but I'm not waiting for it to go on sale because I want to protect my investment!
