Perfect
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Returned the Sony UBP-X800M2 for this. Half the weight and much smaller profile. Easily fits in tighter shelfs. Works perfectly with LG TVS SIMPLINK function and this player automatically turns on DOLBY VISION unlike the Sony where DOLBY VISION will need to be turned on manually for each movie.

||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a good product and easily picks up the Wi-Fi signal from the basement. However, it only came with Netflix preloaded and no instructions to load Prime for those of us that are tech challenged. I had told the sales person I wanted both Prime and Netflix but it's my fault for not reading the box myself prior to purchase.

LG gives a satisfying multimedia experience
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am a casual watcher of movies and TV. The LG 4K Blu-ray Player suited my needs and has more than enough features should I be curious to explore them. I have this player connected to my LG 32” UHD HDR Monitor with FreeSync in white and use my Sennheiser HD 560S Wired Open Aire Over-the-Ear Headphones for an isolated audio and movie-watching experience. The playback is great, the startup and shutdown times are convenient, and the imagery and sounds are equally stable and loud. The remote is handy and the homing bars or small bumps on certain buttons help the user remember and find the right buttons to press when the lights are off. You do have to point the remote directly in line with the light sensor. At an angle, it may not respond to the first press. If you need a Blu-ray player that can stream YouTube, play music CDs, display images and videos via USB, and play DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K discs, this one from LG takes the cake.

Beautiful Picture; Limited Features
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The LG UBK90 is a worthy successor to LG's previous player, the UP970. It is Dolby Vision-compatible out of the box and should be an excellent 4K Blu-ray player for most users. However, it's missing a few features that some A/V enthusiasts would enjoy. PROS: - Easy set up. Simply connect an HDMI cable (make sure it's a Certified Premium cable), plug it into a power outlet, and then follow the on-screen instructions. - Very fast and responsive. Discs are fast to load and the unit responds to commands from the remote quickly. - Dual HDMI outputs. HDMI 2 is reserved for audio-only output. Perfect for those with older soundbars or receivers that can't pass through Dolby Vision or HDR signals. - Beautiful picture quality. I've tried several UHD Blu-rays, 3D Blu-rays, regular Blu-rays, and even some old DVDs. All look very nice. For UHD Blu-rays, the player automatically engages Dolby Vision or HDR10 depending on the format of the disc. Unlike some other 4K Blu-ray players, this player supports Dolby Vision out of the box -- you don't have to wait for any firmware updates. - Quiet operation. A common complaint of the previous UP970 model was that the disc drive sounded like a jet engine. The UBK90 has been extremely quiet during all discs that I've played. - Solid build quality. It's not as sturdy or hefty as some competing models, but it feels noticeably heavier and more solidly built than the UP970. - The remote control is lightweight and comfortable to hold. CONS: - There is no "subtitle" button on the remote. If you want to turn on subtitles during movie playback, you'll need to press the "info" button and then turn on subtitles via an on-screen menu. - The user interface design of this player is archaic - like something out of the early 2000s. It works, but I personally think it's time for LG to add a bit more polish. - The settings menu is extremely limited. There are no advanced audio/video settings. No Bluetooth connectivity for wireless headphones. No obvious way to stream media from a home network. - There is no advanced playback information while watching a disc. Some other Blu-ray players are capable of displaying detailed video/audio codec information as well as bitrate during disc playback. Likely not a big deal for average users, but advanced users might miss having this information available. - Only two streaming services - Netflix and YouTube - are available. It doesn't appear that anymore will be added. OTHER THOUGHTS: - There is a known issue with Dolby Vision over HDMI on LG OLED TVs. During certain movies, black levels (particularly the black bars above and below the picture) will appear as a murky grey rather than perfect black. Usually, the black levels will flicker back-and-forth between perfect black and grey during the entire movie. I tried to watch The Matrix 4K disc (with Dolby Vision) on the UBK90 connected to my LG OLED C6 TV. The elevated black levels were so distracting that I had to stop watching. Unfortunately, there is no way to force the UBK90 into HDR10 mode for discs that have Dolby Vision, which would solve the black level issue (at the expense of Dolby Vision). So in order to watch The Matrix, I had to reconnect an older 4K Blu-ray player that does not support Dolby Vision. Some discs do not have this issue: Black Panther and Saving Private Ryan appeared to play in Dolby Vision with perfect black levels. Regardless, LG has acknowledged that this is a problem with its OLED TVs, but still has not fixed it. It needs to be fixed ASAP. OVERALL: If you're looking for a no-frills 4K Blu-ray player to go with your new Dolby Vision-enabled TV, this is a great option. However, competing models in the same price range offer more advanced features and more streaming services that some users will enjoy. Perhaps most importantly, LG needs to address the elevated Dolby Vision black level issue via firmware updates ASAP. Otherwise, the benefits of many Dolby Vision Blu-ray discs will be lost on owners of LG OLED TVs.

Full Five Stars
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Picture quality is excellent as I suspected it would be. Very, very nice. The experience is more like looking out a window rather than watching a video display. The 4K movies I watched and the upscaling job the player did on regular Blu-ray discs was top notch in my opinion. Regular DVDs I watched were not very satisfying however and I have to believe this was due to the source material rather than any deficiency of the UBK90. The remote control has a number of buttons made of translucent rubber, but are not backlit. In this day and age I find it puzzling that manufacturers of televisions and source hardware do not provide remote controls with back lighting. A lot of my TV watching is in a room with no lights or low ambient light and quite often I want to pause or “rewind” programming or perform some other function and I often struggle to find the correct button on the remote. This LG remote does provide some tactile clues to help you navigate in the dark, but I would still prefer full backlighting. The remote takes only one AAA battery - seeing this in a remote is a first for me, and the battery is provided. An HDMI cable is not provided with the player. The power cord is attached to the chassis and is not removable - this might be inconvenient for some installs when swapping out equipment with concealed wiring. The front panel controls on the unit are basic: power, drawer open, play/pause, and stop. The buttons are raised symbols that are impossible to tell apart by feel and none of them are illuminated. There is a faint green light on the front panel to indicate the power is on. I miss the old days when there was a digital counter on the front panel, but on this LG there is no display of any type. There is a front panel USB port to allow you to connect other devices with content on them. The unit makes very little noise when running. The top of the case is flat which makes it possible to stack hardware - some makers have had case tops that were not flat and I would find that annoying if I wanted to sit something on top of the player. Provided apps are only Netflix and YouTube. This is probably of no real concern since most 4K televisions are probably smart TVs with a multitude of built-in apps. Menus are easy to navigate, unit responds to remote commands crisply, setup is easy, wi-fi connection and firmware updating is simple. This player supports a wide variety of optical disc formats and file formats…I can’t believe there are any more out there that are not on the list of supported types, nor did I even know this many existed. The LG UBK90 is a moderately priced Ultra-HD Blu-ray player that should satisfy most anyone looking to update their hardware to 4K capability. The only thing that disappointed me was the lack of remote illumination, but that is probably the case with 90+ percent of current remote controls, so I don’t feel right dinging this player a full star for that.

Great Item
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a very functional and nice looking item that I got for an excellent price (on sale + open box item). I would definitely recommend it especially if found on sale. For scale, the tv in the picture is 65” so this is a larger disk player.

Q: QuestionI'm looking for a 4K Blu-ray player with Dolby vision Plus Dolby Atmos along with 3D And would like to have my Blu-ray movies upscaled to near 4K. Is there such a player out there on the market or will I have to wait. Thanks.
Asked by Ace.
- A:Answer 4k uhd players do not decode Dolby Atmos or DTS X. The player, when at to bitstream audio will send the signs to your home theater receiver. The receiver then converts it to ATMOS or DTS x. Now, the real question is, does your audio receiver or audio source decode Dolby Atmos and DTS X?

Q: QuestionIs this 4k player region free?
Asked by Fred.
- A:Answer Hi Fred. The LG Streaming 4K Ultra HD Hi-Res Audio Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-ray Player - Black, Model # UBK90 is not a region free player. However, Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs are region-free and can play on devices that support Ultra HD Blu-ray, regardless of the region where they were purchased. For some reason, manufacturers have decided not to code 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs by region. In other words, if you have a 4K movie title, it should play in any 4K player, regardless of what country the disc came from. However, this is only true for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs...^IFV

Q: QuestionWe just got the lg ubk90 and we are unable to get Dolby atmos to work. I can not find the bitstream option in the settings. Our Dolby atmos Blu-rays play back in Dolby true-hd per the av receiver (Sony STR-DH790). Apple TV 4K shows atmos works no problem
Asked by 4Kfans.
- A:Answer Hi On (I think) page 23 on the AUDIO Settings, make sure Digital output is set to AUTO The manual doesn't mention Dolby Atmos but does in the note refer to Bitstream On Justice League I found it was set on the disc to Dolby DTS. I finally found that by manually setting it to Dolby Atmos it played as expected. Mission Impossible and Star Wars The Last Jedi e.g. picked it up correctly. Dolby vision kicked in with no intervention needed. I hope this helps
