Must have for any Z body owner. This is the best travel lens you will ever buy for the Nikon Z system. It's not the sharpest up close at F2 for something like a tight head shot, but it has beautiful character in those scenarios and very vintage rendering. I used to use a 50 1.8G that wasn't sharp unless I stopped it down to 2.8. This 40 is sharper at F2 than my old 50 at 2.8 ever was. Wonderful for most uses especially low light.

Best standard prime for the money on any mirrorless system. Beautiful optic, plastic but extraordinarily sturdy and light. Excellent bokeh quality with minimal to no cat's-eye effect. Closer to the human eye than 50mm.

I purchased the Nikon 40mm f/4 to try out the Nikon ZF, and the lens impressed me more than the camera body. I have no complain about sharpness, or the corners. If it was weather sealed, I’d be an easy recommendation for professional work. I shoot mostly in low light scenarios and at f/2, it was amazing. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for an inexpensive, small, capable lens to start a Nikon photo journey.
