This lens is amazing! A lot of people would write it off simply because it’s a f 1.8 but the optics are superb. If you really dig into it you’ll find the MTF charts are very similar to the amazing 55 Ziess Otus but the Nikon is smaller and has AF. The sharpness and contrast on this lens is mind blowing even at 1.8 with very well controlled chromatic aberration. Also there is little to no focus breathing so I also use this lens for video a lot . If you just bought into the Z system or looking at jump into it this lens is a must. It’s the cheapest prime lens available for the system currently but it’s such a huge value when understanding the optical qualities. A lot of professional photographers preach about faster primes but I’ve found that I’m reaching for the Z lenses over any of the Sigma Art and or any of the older F mount lenses in particular this 50mm.

This is the first “prime lens” I’ve purchased for my Nikon ZF, I thought it was a little expensive considering it’s a 1.8 lens. Anyway.. I’m really glad I purchased it. I’ve kept it mounted on my camera since the day i bought it. The lens has a lot of character. Bokeh is very pleasing and to my eyes has the classic vintage style swirls. It is a little on the heavy side but not a burden to carry all day. It balances well on the ZF if you have the small rig grip. This lens focuses quickly, silently and accurately.. especially with the newer Z bodies. The lens is weather sealed and dust resistant. I wouldn’t try to get it drenched but I think it’ll be fine in light rain. The 50mm lens is in my opinion a good focal length for most uses and it won’t completely destroy a background if you shoot it wide open. I love this lens and I think you will also. In fact, I love this lens so much that I sold off my other camera body and lenses because this lens has become my go to for my personal photo work.

Autofocus is fast, accurate, and quiet, and it works flawlessly with eye detection on my Z7 II. Low-light performance is excellent too, and I’ve had zero issues shooting indoors or at night.
