      Finished with Sony

We purchased this product in November, 2016 to replace a five-year old Sony blu-ray player that had developed too many issues to continue using. I was excited to have a streaming device, never having had one before, and we had been wanting to try Netflix for a long time. Setup and connection to our wireless router was easy, and we began streaming. At first, the unit streamed flawlessly, but as we continued we would find that from time to time the streaming speed would drop dramatically to 240 bps, which is half of standard definition and results in an awful picture. After a few minutes the streaming speed would return to an acceptable high definition level but would drop from time to to time to the ridiculous low speed. I checked all settings and options on the Sony but could find nothing that might cause the intermittent drop in streaming speed. Because of this, last December we bought a Roku Ultra to replace the Sony as a streaming device, and we have experienced no issues with drops in streaming speed since. So, this unit is worthless for us as a streaming device, but I'm just getting started. After playing a disc, from time to time the Sony will freeze up and respond to no commands from either the remote or the buttons on the front of the unit. Our old Sony had also developed this issue in its last couple of years, and our only solution was to physically disconnect the power cable and then plug it back it in. I researched this issue on the internet and found scores of others who had the same problem with Sony blu-ray players. Some had contacted the company for help, but no one had ever received a simple solution other than to disconnect and reconnect the power. Given that our old Sony had developed the same issue, I can only assume that the company either doesn't know how to fix this problem, or they just don't care. The third problem our player has developed is that the HDMI jack on the player is beginning to malfunction, resulting in intermittent loss of video from time to time when playing a disc. I have no doubt what is causing the loss of video, because our old Sony developed the same problem after about four years. After extensive trouble-shooting with our old unit, I finally figured out what was causing the video loss when I replaced the HDMI cable with a component cable, which, of course, also required an additional cable for audio. So, while our old Sony needed four years to show this issue, our new one has only taken about a year and a half. I guess the days of confidently knowing that the purchase of a Sony product insured top quality have receded into the sunset. From now on, we are ABS (anything but Sony) when considering prospective electronic products. So long, Sony. It was nice but now it's gone.

Have had great experiences with sony products in the past but after purchasing this Blu-Ray player i will look to other manufacturers for this kind of product. The smallest inconvenience is it's start-up time. Menu will display fairly quickly but won't let you do anything for about a minute while all the apps initialize. Not the end of the world but annoying when you're ready to watch something and you're just sitting there. The worst part BY FAR though is that it is terrible at connecting to your internet. The wireless connection will see my router and say "Connected" but anytime i try to pull up Youtube or Netflix it says "Unable to cannect. Do you want to change your internet settings?" or "Checking network connection. Please Wait". When first purchased this occurred but after about 3-5 minutes it would connect and be fine. Annoying but i'm not really the type to return purchases over any little gripe. Unfortunately the window for returns has passed and it's gotten to where it's a guessing game any time i try to pull up one of these apps. There's about a 50% chance that it will eventually connect after about 7-10 minutes of sitting time but equal chances that i'll get absolutely nothing. Restart - wait 1.5 minutes for reboot/initialize Wait the (if i'm lucky) 3.5 minutes to see if it will get a connection. Dig through the settings to see if there's SOMETHING i can do to make it more functional. Wrap back to the home page test youtube again Fail Reset Wash/Rinse/Repeat I'm not a crazy NetOps/IT guy but i'm fairly tech savy. I can navigate through most issues or research enough to address most issues but this little Blu-Ray player has me way more frustrated than I'd like to admit. This isn't an issue with my Wi-Fi router since nothing else in the house has any issue connecting to it. My old Sony BluRay player worked like a champ and connected great for about 6 years (it also booted quicker but i digress). It eventually died but it had a good run. If i could get an exact replica of it I would but for now I'll be looking to Sony's competitors for a replacement and will be much more particular about how well something performs when i first get it out of the box.

Remember the days when you bought something, took it home, hooked it up and it began working. For some time now, it's been chic for manufacturers to sell "cripple ware" meaning that the commodity you bought won't work out of the box. In this case, the device has NO cabling. It's not just the added expense, it's the problem of living in a rural area, driving home and realizing your device won't work because the manufacturer decided to cheap out. I got used to seeing "batteries not included" in reasonably-sized letters. So, you had to buy batteries before you left the store. This item needed to at LEAST show "CABLING NOT INCLUDED" so I could have picked up a HDMI cable at the same time. I studied the box at home for five full minutes, noticed the multi-language print contained 14 different print sizes and fonts, but never saw anything that mentioned the word "cable." And, it might be there! "HDMI" is of course mentioned. But, not that you can't use the HDMI port. It's a form of marketing fraud; to keep the price as low as possible, without the customer knowing unless he reads all the fine print BEFORE buying. If "NO CABLE" is mentioned up front, the prospective customer will mentally add $20 to the sales price and often not buy. Better to make the sale, and let the customer worry about getting it to work. Then, he only thinks he's spending $20. The clerk didn't even offer to say that the device was useless without an optional cable. But, the trickery ain't free. Anytime I get ripped off like this, I make sure I write a review ---- the only time I ALWAYS write a review. And, I give ONE star in partial payback at being a victim. That rating is richly deserved. If we all did that, I'm very certain the stores will be selling less cripple ware.

WiFi Problems Noted On Other Sites Do Not Buy

      Posted

Purchased this in December of 2016. 3 months later, and there are daily problems with WiFi connectivity when using streaming media. I purchased this because we wanted to watch Netflix on our TV instead of our computer and we also wanted a Blue-ray player. I only checked the reviews on Best Buy but if you check around the internet about the wireless problems with this product, you'll see that the problem is widespread. There are intermittent buffering problems when watching any show, it either pauses for 30sec numerous times making it unpleasant to watch or doesn't connect at all. I've tried everything that Sony suggests to try and fix the problem, sometimes the solutions work for a short time but then it doesn't work again. Sometimes it won't work at all. I tested our WiFi in our home using an old Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and have no WiFi problems. I have the laptop in the same room as our TV that has the Sony BDP-S3700. I can watch Netflix, YouTube, etc wirelessly on the Dell laptop with no issues at all. Another thing you should know is that there is an app called PlayStation Now that will be discontinued on all Sony products. So, if you're thinking of buying this player for that app, you won't be able to use it in a couple of months. The same goes for other Sony products that have the app. Check the Sony website to see when the app will be cancelled for specific Sony products. Don't waste your time with The Sony BDP-S3700. How can my 10 year old laptop have no problems connecting wirelessly but this 3 month old Sony streaming media player have problems?

I really wish it was possible to give this combination Blu-Ray/DVD player and wireless streaming box a 4.5 rather than a 4 star rating. My experience so far (I've had it for almost a month-and-a-half) with Blu-Ray and DVD playback and streaming has been uniformly positive. It's handled both my home-recorded DVDs and the ones I've bought from specialty houses like Sinister Cinema without a hiccup. Of course Blu-Ray is a noticeable improvement in picture quality, but even DVDs look great. Wireless setup couldn't have been easier. And since we already have a Netflix account, the dedicated button on the remote is a handy feature. As far as streaming is concerned, I've had no issues at all there. (Of course, we do have a fast broadband connection.) YouTube streaming is flawless and wonderfully responsive in contrast to the slow, halting, freezing-and-error-prone Roku 2 interface. Really, my only complaint -- and the reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars -- is that the streaming channel (they call them apps) selection from Sony is kind of limited, compared to my Roku box. It does have the most popular subscription services, like Netflix and HuluPlus, as well as a fair variety of other channels, some subscription and some free. Youtube and a handful of others are pre-selected, although really, Sony, Opera TV is one of the default apps? I've nothing at all against opera, but it seems kind of an odd choice, to say the least. But I wish it also had services like HBOGo, and FilmStruck. If it did, I'd unplug the Roku and use this for all my streaming. Other pros are the small profile, and the ability to program the remote to turn off your TV.

This smart blu-ray player is replacing the previous Sony device that I have had for several years. I like the quick startup and the new menus. All the apps that I have tried so far (Netflix, Amazon, Youtube) have worked great! The picture quality is wonderful with the apps and with blu-rays and DVDs. My wife and I both remarked that the picture quality was much better than our previous blu-ray. The drawbacks are related to the wifi connection. The device cannot find my 5 GHz channel and will only connect to the 2.4 GHz channel. My old Sony device could (and still can) connect to both. All the other Wifi devices in my house can see both channels. Sometimes the apps lag, skip, or drop even though the blu-ray is less than two feet from the router (perhaps because it can only see the slower channel). Furthermore, being a new device I expect it to run pretty smoothly, which is only mostly the case. Having used the device for less than a month now I have had four separate occasions where I have had to disconnect the power because it was frozen and unable to respond to any commands from the remote or on the device itself. It seems like I shouldn't have to do that once a week. Each of these instances has occurred while using an app, not while playing a blu-ray. Overall I am happy with the device but will probably look for a different brand when I need to replace this one. When it works the device is great, but it should work better than it does right now.

I purchase this product in July 2018 after reading great reviews, but it stopped working properly after about 2 months. I contacted Sony and after repeating the same troubleshooting I had done already, they sent me a paid return label to send them the unit and they would mail me a new one upon receipt. The replacement unit was received and had the same problem - on different TVs, the unit would have to be unhooked from the hdmi cable (not the power cable) in order to turn it back on, which did a manufactur reset each time. So I contacted Sony AGAIN and asked for a refund this time given there is clearly someone wrong here. They said no, that their warranty doesn't cover refunds. So I went through the process again to return the unit, wait for them to get it back then wait to be sent yet another replacement. I received that today October 16). It has no power cord or remote in the box. Was told once again that they don't issue refunds, so I demanded they overnight the missing parts as I think a month of dealing with this is enough. The best they can do is try to do 2nd day air. Fine. I asked them if those parts get here and this third unit doesn't work, will I have other options at that point. Not a positive response.

      Quite a Nice DVD Player

This player plays DVDs just fine, although I haven't tried any BluRay DVDs yet. I actually purchased this to show vacation pictures (JPEG) on my TV and there were a couple of disappointments. First of all, I found out that Sony does not endorse the use of a portable (non-self powered) hard drive with the use of their front-mounted USB port. Playing pictures stored on a thumb drive is fine, though. Secondly, the player does not recognize more than 500 pictures stored in any one folder so you will not be able to put all of your vacation photos in one continuous slide show if there are more than that amount. Thirdly, whenever you use an album of MP3 music as a background, if you leave the slideshow to view a relevant MP4 video stored on the thumb drive or if you change folders to a different group of photos, then the music always starts over again beginning with track 1 instead of just continuing through the rest of the album. You might be hearing track 1 quite a bit if you do some jumping around in the menu. All in all, though, there are a lot of great features in this device and I am happy to have it since the streaming option gives me Netflix and YouTube. It currently looks like Amazon and Google are having a fight and Google is pulling YouTube support from the Amazon Fire Stick which I had been using with my main TV. Fortunately I can maintain the YouTube app using the Sony but unfortunately I lost my PBS app that had been on the Fire Stick.
