About This Item

On October 2 1958, after over 60 years of colonial rule, Guineans voted overwhelmingly for their independence, and Guinea was declared a Republic with Sékou Touré as President. To free Guinea from it's colonial legacy, president Touré sought to restore dignity to his nation and give cause for Guineans to take pride in their culture, history and newfound freedom. To achieve this, he instructed his government to implement new cultural policies to revitalise indigenous culture. In 1961, President Touré launched authenticité, the new cultural policy for Guinea. One of it's first acts was to assemble the best Guinean musicians into a new state-sponsored orchestras that were tasked with presenting traditional Guinean music in a new and modern style. During the years of Sékou Touré's presidency (1958 - 1984), the government's cultural policy of authenticité was applied strictly to the creative arts. Guinea's sole political party exercised complete authority over artistic production. From 1967 to 1983, Guinea's government presented selections of songs on it's own recording tag, Syliphone. These recordings were revolutionary in many aspects Syliphone was the first recording tag to feature traditional African instruments and the traditional songs of the griots within an orchestre setting; and it was the first government-sponsored recording tag of post-colonial Africa. Syliphone represented authenticité in action, and over 750 songs were released by the recording tag on vinyl discs. All are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. This is the second of a two-volume which presents a selection of the best songs from Guinea's Syliphone recording tag. This volume focuses on recordings from the 1970s, when Guinea's authenticité policy had transformed the nation's music through a network of over 30 orchestras, each representing their local region, and each presenting Guinean music

Deftones - Around the Fur - VINYL LP
    4.6(12)

Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening InchMy Own Summer (Shove It),Inch serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternate with fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression. This LP version comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Album Tracks 1. My Own Summer (Shove It) 2. Lhabia 3. Mascara 4. Around the Fur 5. Rickets 6. Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) 7. Lotion 8. Dai the Flu 9. Headup 10. MX
