Easy install but limited without subscription

I wanted a video doorbell but models like Ring were too large for the limited space I had to work with. SimpliSafe fits the space perfectly. I included a photo showing my installation. You can see in the photo that the space to the left of the doorbell is recessed and the space to the right is raised. I didn't want to be forced to drill holes in my stucco and fill gaps after installation. I needed something sized just right to fit in the middle. This doorbell works. Technically, the actual installation steps took me about 15-20 minutes but the overall job took about 30 minutes due to one of the soft zinc screws stripping during installation. After removing the stripped screw, I used one of the screws from the previous doorbell. The next issue was with the app. App setup was easy but the doorbell's camera had trouble scanning the QR code to set up the wifi inside the doorbell. I had to keep adjusting my angle until the doorbell was finally able to scan the code after a few minutes. Once setup was completed, the doorbell worked great. I have no issues with the app or device and the doorbell works nicely with my existing chime. I love that this doorbell also works entirely off of the existing wiring. The video quality is decent enough and I can hear sounds as well. The two-way intercom works well and anyone standing near the doorbell can hear the speaker's voice loud and clear. The doorbell has never lost wifi connectivity to date. I really like this doorbell but discovered it's pretty limited without a subscription. There are no recordings, snapshots or other useful captures without a subscription. The only feature other than being notified of motion and doorbell rings is viewing live footage. I was hoping for at very least a motion-triggered snapshot like my other security cameras offer. That feature makes them useful without a subscription. If neighborhood kids decide to play doorbell ditch, you'd better be fast on the draw with this app if you want any hope of catching them in the act. There isn't even a snapshot feature during active monitoring. If you want to take a snapshot while actively viewing live footage, you'll have to take a screenshot with your phone. This is a great video doorbell option that's easy to install and is working well so far. I wish it had a few more useful monitoring features right out of the box without requiring a subscription but that isn't a deal-breaker for me. It fits and works well, two things I was hard-pressed to find for my situation previously.

I receive packages often and a lot of them are placed on my front patio when I’m not home. In this day and age, one cannot help but feel a little apprehensive and helpless knowing that your valuable delivery could be sitting on your steps unsupervised. For a while, I’ve been hesitant about a video doorbell because my mentality was that ‘I haven’t had any of my packages stolen. Why should I worry?’. It’s naïve mentality, I know. I got the SimpliSafe Pro Smart Wi-Fi Video Doorbell because I realized that after my neighbor down the street had his packages stolen twice in the same week, maybe I could be next or even one of the houses directly next to me. Better safe than sorry became my new mindset. I thought that the installation of the SimpliSafe Doorbell was going to be overwhelming since I’m not an electrician. I’m pleased to say that the set up was INCREDIBLY easy. I turned off the power to the original doorbell button, removed it and easily re-attached the two existing wires to the SimpliSafe. The final step was securing the housing unit to the wall. It took less than 20 minutes. Once the SimpliSafe was installed, I downloaded the app that gives me access to video doorbell. I set up the account, connected it to my Wi-Fi, synced the camera to the app and I was ready to enjoy a new level of security. There are three motion sensitivity levels that you can choose and will notify you if someone is approaching and has arrived at your door. If someone leaves your home, you will be alerted to that activity as well. You have the option to directly talk to anyone that is in range of the SimpliSafe device through the phone app. I am impressed at the sound quality and the volume. There’s no static or audio garble that some might expect. The picture quality is amazing and had a solid distance from the 162-degree lens. I’m able to see someone pulling up to the front of the house and walking up the driveway toward the door. The camera will also switch to night vision when it’s dark to which the clarity is clean, allowing me to see whoever might be at the door. The SimpliSafe housing unit is LOCKED into place. Criminals and vandals are not exactly the brightest bunch and some seem to think, ‘if I steal the camera, there’s no evidence of my wrongdoing’. If anyone is foolish enough to try to destroy the SimpliSafe, they have their work cut out for them. Speaking of video evidence, SimpliSafe offers an affordable option that stores past recordings in their cloud service in case you need to review past footage. This can be useful in many fortuitous ways. If this is your first Video Doorbell or you’re looking to replace a previous brand that might have not worked out, the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell offers easy and solid security.

One the most useful gadget I own, very helpful and amazing images. High resolution images, microphone helps interact with visitors, especially for deliveries. Motion sensor and notifications are good to monitor the front and back of house(need two). It is a wide angle camera which complements my security system. The app is simple and easy to use. Only drawback I find is that it does not give you the option to record to your pc or phone. It does give you the option to record to the cloud, for a price of course. Installation is a breeze and easy to pair with your router/WiFi. The deign is beautiful and modern better the other choices out there. I use it check on my kids when they arrive from school.

We recently installed the SimpliSafe video doorbell, installation was pretty straightforward, it took about a 1/2 hour. One thing I did have trouble with is connecting to my WIFI, I had to unscrew the doorbell to press the “reset” button in the back of the doorbell. I then noticed (after about 15 minutes of trouble shooting) that the SimpliSafe app was attempting to connect to my 5GHz WIFI instead of my 2.4GHz WIFI...This was totally my fault because I didn’t realize it until I kept getting an error message so many times when trying to connect. I then switched it to the correct Wifi network and it connected right away. I have notifications on so I do get the motion-detected notifications frequently- I think this is happening when it’s very windy outside-, which it has been for the past week or so. I do like the fact that when I do get the notifications that I can view my front door “live” - this is an awesome feature! I was at work and got a notification and I just clicked the live video and saw FedEx delivering my Package! I also get the "Someone rang your doorbell" Notification and I can see who it is without getting off my couch! Awesome! I recommend reading all the directions thoroughly and making sure the app is connecting to the correct WiFi! And -don’t attach the doorbell until everything is set!

I was excited to try this Simplisafe product because it's described as a 'standalone' product, and I wanted to compare it to other cameras I've tested. My initial impression of the doorbell was very favorable; it has a very simplistic, yet stylish appearance, so it's not going to appear as some larger than necessary, 'out of place' camera sitting next to your door. Installation was pretty straight forward. My installation took a bit longer because I have an older house and I wound up extending the wiring because I didn't want to take the chance of the existing wiring breaking while I was hooking everything up. I also wound up not using the screws that came with the product since both of the Phillips heads started to strip out with a simple low speed power driver. I decided to use the 40 yr old screws since they are evidently made of stronger metal. Once the doorbell was installed and the power was back on, I installed the app on my phone and activated the camera using the OCR code from the app. The app appears well designed and it's fairly intuitive. The live feed from the camera is very good, and even at night, the camera can easily capture images from 10+ft from the door with good clarity and a wide field of view. I tested motion detection, and the blue light around the button lit up each time when I got within about 6ft or so of the door. However here's where I began to question the product's 'standalone' claims. Although I had push notifications turned on in the app, I received none. I could see all of the events in the 'Timeline' screen of the app, but I got no real-time notifications. I called Simplisafe customer support and was initially told that the the push notifications should work without a monthly monitoring or recording package. The girl I spoke with was supposed to call back, but after two days I called back and talked to someone else who told me that I had to have a paid monitoring package to get instant notifications. I was repeatedly told that I could still view the live feed from the camera, but I couldn't make this person understand that that was only useful if I was at the house and heard the doorbell, or if I kept the 'Timeline' up on the app and watched it 24/7. I've tested several other products that allow push notifications/texts without a monthly fee, so I decided to call back and talk to someone else. Once again I was told I needed to have a monitoring package to get real-time feedback. To me, this is disappointing on several levels. First, this IS a standalone product, but it's basically useless unless you give Simplisafe some amount of money each month. If you're going to do that, why wouldn't you have their whole system? Second, the app is actually able to see the motion/doorbell notifications in the Timeline, so why not at least allow those events to be real-time alerts thru the app? Overall, I was disappointed with this product. It looks great and functions as it should, with great video and motion detection, but all of the functionality is basically useless without a monitoring package, which I won't have unless I wind up getting an entire Simplisafe system. I would not recommend this product as a standalone doorbell camera.

Great way to monitor your front door when home or not home. Two-way voice is also great, though you have to remember to press the button to talk and release to listen. Both can't talk at same time. Super easy to setup. No base station needed. Just use existing wiring and chime. And remember to turn off breaker when installing to be safe. Camera is secured to outside baseplate with a screw. Once installed, pressing button on doorbell works as before, assuming you've remembered to turn the breaker back on. You install the SimpliSafe app on your phone and go in to connect to a camera. You don't need to enter the serial # for base station. To connect camera to WiFi, you select network and enter password on mobile device. This will then display a QR Code. You place camera in front of camera and it will then connect. If sunny outside, be sure to block the glare so it can clearly see the code. Once connected, you can watch the camera feed live from the phone. If you want the video saved so you can watched later, there is a $5/month charge. Waiting to see how much we need to train our visitors.... So far, working great. At most, 30 minutes to setup. Hardest part was finding which breaker was the doorbell...

If you like 1080p video with a 160-degree field of view, this is a good option. I get plenty of viewing space of my front porch. SimpliSafe's doorbell cam won't provide face recognition, sad face. It does have high dynamic range imaging adjust to extremely bright times like direct sunlight or wicked reflections. Heads up, no battery of its own, it’s for wired doorbells. Check your voltage before installation or hire someone. You can automatically record video when sensors go off. It also has two-way audio equipped with noise and echo cancellation that minimizes background noise. However, I’ve noticed when I am talking I may hear a dump truck or dog barking depending on how close the sound is the doorbell, same if the visitor is talking to me. I don’t pay for storage so if I get a notification, my phone usually close by for me to check to see what’s going on. I strongly suggest not to have any plants or trees within close view or your camera will go off all day. Annoying! The design looks ok, nothing special. I have the white one but now I think it was a bad idea because it wont stay white forever. Overall, I’m happy!!

I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this product since it was announced in Jan 2018, and it doesn't disappoint! Features 5/5: Overall simplicity and ease of install was excellent. SimpliSafe made it super easy to integrate into your existing wired doorbell location. The camera notifies you via your SimpliSafe app when motion is detected, and the quality of the camera is amazing! Wide angle, high definition picture, and quick response time. Also has a locking mechanism, so people cannot easily walk away with it. Aesthetics 4.5/5: The dimensions are a bit deeper than most of the competitors, and it sticks out a bit, but overall looks great and fits in to any décor. The best buy version even has interchangeable faceplates to choose from, which was an unexpected surprise. Other: The only thing holding me back from giving a perfect 5 stars is that this product does not connect to non-broadcasting SSID Wifi networks, similarly to the other SimpliSafe cameras. While I understand that a non-broadcasting SSID isn't more secure, the fact that all of my other cameras from all other brands can connect to it, the SimpliSafe alarm system can connect to it... but ALL SimpliSafe CAMERAS cannot... makes no sense and a pain to integrate. This wont apply to most people, but wanted others to be aware. So in order to integrate into your Wifi that has SSID broadcasting disabled, you have 3 options. 1.) Create a guest network where the SSID is broadcasted. The camera doesn't need to be on same wifi network as your main SimpliSafe system. 2.) Change your main network to broadcast the SSID, which causes you to re-enter the Wifi credentials on ALL of your devices (home automation, PCs, network devices, etc). 3.) Return the camera to SimpliSafe, who is aware of this issue, although doesn't state in the documentation. But when asked, they will gladly accept a return for refund. Also, no documentation can be found on operating temperatures, etc, but assuming it was meant to withstand the weather. Hoping to see if it can survive a WI winter. Overall, a great addition to your SimpliSafe ecosystem and pleased with the product quality and integration into my security system.

I have been waiting for Simplisafe to offer a video doorbell since I use all their other security products throughout my home. I am not disappointed! It was very easy to install and hooked up to my wifi within minutes, unlike Ring products that wouldn't and I had to return. The video quality is great and very clear. I also receive texts when someone comes in view of my camera and it instantly sends me a 1 minute video. Works in daylight or night. The only bad thing is it sees to far and records the UPS guy driving by, but I can live with that. Great product and looks great, not real chunky like other video doorbells.

    Good Video Quality, Audio/Video Delays

I have been in the market for a good doorbell camera and decided to try out SimpliSafe Video doorbell since I already have their security system for my house. I was impressed at the ease of install and range of the camera however the 3 second delay along with continual disconnects are a problem. Pros- Ease of Install Camera Radius Camera Quality Speaker Quality Mic Quality Cons- Only works on 2.4 GHz WiFi Video / Audio Delays Night Vision Quality WiFi Disconnections as there is no "Always On" setting ***Major issue was discovered that after 5 minutes of idle / non usage it completely shuts off; Meaning that the "live video feed" stops. Only way to turn device back on is through the app, motion sensor, or hitting the button for doorbell. *** :: Install / Setup :: The install was very easy and the brackets fits perfectly for the mounting onto the wall. It was a snug fit without any movement and includes a secure pin to prevent anyone from running off with it. Once connected, you install the app that was very easy to install / sign up and link to WiFi Network. :: Video Camera :: The picture quality is 1080p and looks great at all levels of light (except dark). The range of the camera was very impressive and able to view my entire walkway. I was concerned at first since the position of my doorbell is facing the other wall and not out to the street. However with the wide angle of the lenses it was not an issue and looks great. Unfortunately the night vision mode is not as impressive with difficulty at making out faces. Video quality is also affected at night however looks great during the day. ::Application:: The application itself provides a lot of settings you can modify for the video door camera. However there is no "Always On" which in turns once it turns off it disconnects from WiFi. The application is easy to navigate through to quickly get to your camera for "live feed" and "Mic". The only concerns is the 3 second delay for video and mic that can be irritating at times. You are limited to only "Live Feed" or "Mic" when not having a subscription. If you wish to view the video records you will need to have a monthly sub. Overall I am impressed with the video quality however falls short with the Audio/Video delays and night vision. I understand they are a subscription service so will not doc them a star for the video recording. I am removing one star for not having an "Always On" feature and the Audio/Video delays. I do not see the value of paying for a subscription if the Simplisafe Video Doorbell turns itself off and looses it connection to WiFi without a persons intervention.

Good doorbell if you already have Simplisafe

Overall, this is a good choice if you're already in the Simplisafe ecosystem and using their other alarm products. This is basically a "me-too" product that is an uncanny clone of the Nest Hello, although with a slightly lower build quality. Features compare nicely with the competing Nest Hello and Ring Doorbell options, and the UI/UX on the phone app is okay; not really better than the competition, but not worse either. At MSRP, this is probably a better value vs. Ring and Nest's MSRP, but like those products, you'll need to subscribe to the monthly service to get the most out of this. But if you're already subscribing to the simplisafe alarm monitoring, the doorbell is a free add-on, so it's a great choice if you're already in their ecosystem. The biggest negative is there's currently no Google home or Alexa integration available, although I would assume there will be at some point in the future. The hidden secret in all these doorbell and wifi security cameras is the "cool down" period, during which successive motion triggers and/or doorbell pushes will not result in a notification to your phone, and this simplisafe doorbell is no different. I noticed around a 5 minute cooldown between motion trigger notifications, although all activity during the cooldown period was still recorded and available for review. Also, although Simplisafe mentions that they have two different motion sensors to better detect the difference between people, pets and cars, I didn't notice any significant difference in the amount or types of motion notifications vs. the Nest Hello and Ring Doorbell 2 I've used previously. Build quality is not as good as the Nest Hello, but about equal with the Ring Doorbell 1/2. The housing is plastic and seems well sealed. Simplisafe includes mounting "wedges" but does not include the drill bit that comes with the Nest and Ring products. If you're already a subscriber to Simplisafe's alarm service, then this is a good option, otherwise, I'd consider Nest Hello a better choice features-wise, and the Ring a better choice for value.

This was so easy, non tech savvy people can do it. Took less than 15 mins to complete everything, and it worked on first try. After you get it installed, and the app connects the camera. Wait about 5 to 10 mins, it will be working to finish the setup to your WiFi for a solid connection. After that, the live feed will appear and you are good to go. See the photo of my clear video feed, it’s truly a nice addition to my security setup. I’d r commend this setup to anyone that wants an easy setup, with no technical background. The only con for my personal taste is how thick it is, and how far it sticks out from the wall. My other doorbell camera was a lot slimmer, but that’s personal preference.

We’ve had Simplisafe security system for years. ( unmonitored ) Since the SS camera came out and finally offered a $5 month recording option without home monitoring, we got it. Very simple to install and love that it’s not as wide as most. GREAT picture (worth 1 star) and more narrow than some of the others (star #2) and there is no “cool down period” like COMPETITORS have (star #3) so you can get motion detections one right after the other....BUT that’s also part of the problem. There are no zones to set and the recording screen is pretty basic (pic attached) and even on LOW it records EVERY bus, delivery & garbage truck and large SUV’s (alert after alert even set on LOW) but NOT people (set on HIGH) - I’ve had 7 deliveries since the camera was installed and only 1 was recorded. ONE. How is that possible? Have no idea who or when others got delivered - as there were NO alerts or recordings. Oddly no motion alerts by their truck at the time of those deliveries I am thinking it’s the slower vehicles not getting detected - but that still baffles me. So now I am amused at their marketing about “advanced heat sensors for people” thinking my delivery people must actually be cold zombies! ...I digress..... As others have reported, tech support has you go through the (uninstall, reinstall etc.) and sent a new one. Same issues with replacement. Since it’s a beautiful picture, and sound/doorbell alert works.... I can only attribute it to poor software design or bad hardware. Debating returning it completely, but since it’s already installed, we may just keep it for the occasional convenience of seeing someone that actually RINGS THE BELL, and then cancel the monthly recording option since I don’t care to spend $ to watch 30 recordings a day to watch the school bus and trucks drive by each day.

Doorbell is very easy to install, but unfortunately it is not compatible with my doorbell chime unit. The only way I know someone is at the door is if I see the notification come up on my phone or if I am on the first floor and hear the Base Unit chime. I have the chime connector on my chime, but if I didn't have it, the chime would keep going off. I could disconnect the chime all together, but if I get a new chime, them I may need the connector. The video of the doorbell is clear and look good at night. You cannot record video from the doorbell unless you pay a monthly fee, which is seperate from the monintoring fee.

We get a lot of packages and this camera helps us keep tabs on deliveries. It installed easily through our existing SimpliSafe security system. It’s smaller than many other options and easily connected to our older doorbell wires. We did have to adjust the motion detector because it was picking up passing cars on our street.

This little guy was simple to install, no different from a standard doorbell. Only additional step is to download the Simplisafe app and connect the doorbell to your WiFi. I had this up and running in about 20 minutes, that includes removing the old doorbell and everything. The simplest app gives notifications to your phone right away (within 2 seconds). No trouble or hassle getting the doorbell to connect to WiFi. In SimpliSafes instructions and app, it explains the doorbell will only work on 2.4ghz WiFi. Where as mine found my 5ghz WiFi and connected no issues. Don't know if this is due to newer Firmware release or what but a nice feature. The video from the doorbell camera is very clear, as well as the audio on my phone from the person outside at the door. I used the the little wedge during install to angle the doorbell up more, and it worked out great. So as to the person's face better at the door, if they stand close to the doorbell. Without it they're head would be cutoff in the video, as my home builder has the doorbell installed by the door handle. Which is on the lowside to me. All in all, this works great. Just as good as Any other video doorbell on the market imo...

This doorbell installs easily. It works well as a doorbell, however I have had issues with it connecting well to my wifi and losing video. It doesn't always pick up someone in my front yard. These issues may be due to the wifi issue however, rather than the device itself. My ring doorbell was better, but I like that this one connects to my security system and has a slimmer, more discreet profile.

I have a colleague who is mad into Nest, thus I had been made well aware of the capabilities of that product line. Being a SimpliSafe customer already, this camera made the most sense for seamless integration into my already active security system. Installation was incredibly simple. I was up and running in 30 mins. The longest part was figuring out which breaker had my doorbell on it to turn it off. In general, I'm happy with the daytime video quality and the 162° wide angle range. We have a gas lantern over the door and the light and flicker render the night vision not too great. Many posters have commented on the frequency of notifications for "me." I too find this to be a bit annoying, but ultimately, its just a ping on the phone. Sort of one of those things that if I'm home and am in/out I just ignore. I think some sort of facial recognition would greatly improve this product. Similarly, as with competitors, being able to draw polygons for areas of detection. We are a pretty good distance off the street but occasionally get vehicle motion detected/recorded. Other reviewers have mentioned a buzz/humming and/or just a "ding" vs. "ding dong"; I never experienced either of these. Pros: - Simple install - Clear video - Great wide angle - Clear 2-way audio Cons: - No facial detection / too many notifications for "me" - Lack of 24 hr recording / only event-based - Night vision lacks in really low light (better in pitch black)

Surprisingly easy set up. If you get a humming/buzzing sound or the doorbell itself doesn't dong after the ding you can just call or email Simplisafe and they can send you a free Chime Connector that you hook up and it gets rid of that. I have a 30 year old chime box with a built in transformer and the doorbell is compatible even with that after the chime connector was installed (which is also super easy). Video is clear and you can set the field of view that triggers the alarm so if you have a flag or neighbors in the view frame it won't go off all the time.
