This film breathes. Can’t believe no cinematography noms, but def recommend viewing at least once. Some parts are magic, others are excruciatingly slow, but 100% of this is life. It’s a heavy one!

Terence Malick's masterful retelling of the life of Franz Jagerstatter, a poor farmer wo refused to swear allegiance to Adolph Hitler. The Austrian peasant farmer was made a prisoner and finally executed for his convictions. Malick's latest masterwork was shot on location in Austria, in the actual village and in the home where Jagerstatter lived, as well as in the actual courtroom in Germany, where he was convicted, and in the actual prison where he was interned. August Diehl's performance as Jagerstatter is a memorable portrayal of a simple man who says, "no," and suffers, only himself, but so does his wife and sister, where they lived. This is a heartbreaking tale of a simple man who stands by his convictions. His quiet act if resistance was treated as treason, yet in his unwavering beliefs, his love for his wife, Fani, and their three children, keeps his spirit alive to the end. Franz Jagerstatter is a quiet hero who chose to simply say, "no," to man's inhumanity to his fellow man.

A powerful telling of the faith of an Austrian farmer against the Hideous Strength of the Third Reich. It is a fairly long movie that takes the viewer on a deep, unrelenting journey through Franz Jägerstätter's stand for righteousness during the Second World War. We see Franz's determination to remain faithful to the Lord despite the bullying, ruthless tactics of his captors as contrasted to his fellow villagers who submit to the evil that has descended upon them, and who in turn also persecute him and his wife and children. We also witness the faith of his wife in her willingness to support him, knowing that he will be murdered, knowing that she will be widowed and that their children will be left fatherless. This is all set in the beauty of rural Austria, in the midst of simple farm life. It is a difficult story but one that can empower others to stand for the right also. It is reminiscent of "Judgment at Nuremberg".

This is a beautiful film. The film is very Malick, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. The cinematography is gorgeous. The score is gorgeous. Everything about this film, from a technical standpoint, is done really well. If you enjoyed, 'Tree of Life,' you might like this film.

This is a wonderfully made movie. The sound and picture was excellent and the actors were amazing in their roles. The movie is long and you have to love war time movies to watch this and I loved it but my husband fell asleep watching it.

Terrence Malick's best work since The Tree of Life, and one of his best films. This is one that will be considered truly exceptional as time goes by and more people discover this hidden gem.

Excellent movie with beautiful cinematography. Wish there was a 4k bluray, but the visuals are still great.

This is a great film about a brave family. It has some icky scenes when the main person is being bullied. There are some happy time scenes too.
