With equal parts of Kafka and Fritz Lang, Woody Allen tells the darkly comic tale of a '20s European town being terrorized by a strangler, and how Kleinman (Allen)-a hapless local rousted into joining a vigilante posse-is turned by circumstance into the target of the mob's wrath. This expressionistic meditation on fate, S*x, love and death also stars Mia Farrow, John Malkovich, Jodie Foster, Madonna, Lily Tomlin, John Cusack, and Donald Pleasence. 85 min. BW/Rtg PG-13
Working-class dreamers Jonah (Thomas Mitchell) and Olaf (John Qualen) fish the Brooklyn waters and ponder their glorious plan: buy a big boat and head for sunny Cuba. Then an amoral gangster (John Garfield) puts the squeeze on the few bucks they've saved and puts the moves on Jonah's daughter (Ida Lupino), a restless good girl who'd just as soon be bad. And the two friends, the two gentle souls, begin a new plan: murder. Garfield inhabi
