• Yes, you can play music without a subscription. It works like my main Alexa and has the same capabilities, so far.

• It can play music from Pandora for free with commercials every so often unless you subscribe as a premium member, then you won’t have any commercials. For me, the commercials are no big deal. I’m now subscribing to Amazon music unlimited but only for the Echo Dot with clock which costs only $3.99 plus tax every month.
