I’ve used both and I would say the Echo Dot is smarter but the HomePod has much better sound quality.

Each is part of a different ecosystem: HomePod is Apple and Echo is Amazon. They interface with different services and devices and have different voice assistants (Siri and Alexa). Choose the one you’re most integrated with now— if you have iPhone and other Apple devices, you’ll probably want this one.

HomePod Mini is more of a pure speaker and sounds much better than Echo Dot. Echo Dot has an actually useful voice assistant and is the better smart speaker. HomePod is more privacy friendly.

1. Price. The Homepod mini costs 2-5x more than the Echo Dot (depending on generation)

2. Privacy. On the Homepod privacy is a primary consideration. Apple doesn't store your data and avoids sending it to the cloud whenever possible. One the Echo Dot, it's more of an afterthought and requires ongoing management. Your voice recordings will be stored in the cloud, but you can delete them manually if desired. The Echo Dot is also opted in to the Amazon Sidewalk global device network by default, sharing your Internet to help your neighbors' devices work more reliably and helping strangers locate their Tile devices.

3. Hands-free voice control. Both support basic functionality like checking the weather and setting timers. For music, the Homepod mini can play Apple Music hands-free but not much else. The Echo Dot on the other hand supports multiple music streaming services (Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, etc.). It also provides integration with a number of non-music apps and services through Alexa skills, and it can play audio to a non-Amazon devices such as a Sonos speaker.
