I would recommend a laptop instead. Tablets are good for reading electronic books and light web browsing. Intensive internet use is much better with a keyboard and mouse. Plus writing papers and filling in spreadsheets is extremely difficult on an iPad

Yes, it comes with the 3 apps that you mention already installed and they can do all their research through the safari browser, as long as you have an internet connection.
