“Can you switch between headphone and regular tv listening without removing audio out cables from behind the tv?”

We have never used these headphones in the house. We got them so the kids can watch a DVD in the car and we can continue listening to music, Bluetooth, anything But a Disney movie!! As for the car, we don't have to change anything at all. There was also no set up. I put in batteries, turned them on and it was ready. Truly, not sure how it would work in the house, but I would assume similar.
