“Since this seems to be an older model printer I have to ask about the availability of ink cartridges. Are they still available? I don't see a 6 cartridge model with newer technology on the Canon site, is there one that I missed and should consider?”

Ink is still readily available... I'm just really happy with it after doing some research to find something both affordable and with satisfactory print quality.
