Hello Mark! The Fire TV Recast is typically meant to be used as an always online device itself. There are some features and content that are locally cached (locally stored) that would allow you to use it in the event that you have a temporary internet interruption. But the vast majority of the interface is grayed out or inaccessible when offline. So it isn't meant for use as an offline device and would need some sort of connection to a home network even if that network temporarily loses internet connectivity.
