Why is the light on the screen so dim? null

I expect this is to preserve battery life. The Microsoft Band had a LED-like screen and the watch could barely last a very long GPS run over 2 hours. The 235 will last that long even if you charged it 4 days before.

The face is great for natural light and dark spaces. If interested, you may hit a button on the side of the watch to temporarily increase the brightness and there are also apps to change the face of the watch to something you may find more pleasing if the stock face is too dim for your liking. My guess is that the face is somewhat more dim to conserve battery and to extent the charge of the watch.
