Hi MWe - Thanks for viewing GE Model AHP05LZ! The air conditioner should always be plugged into its own individual electrical outlet which has a voltage rating that matches the rating plate. This provides the best performance and also prevents overloading house wiring circuits which could cause a fire hazard from overheated wires. Here's the link to view the Installation Guide: https://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-5000461.pdf - If you have any additional questions, do not hesitate to ask, we are happy to help at GEAppliances.com! Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, it does need a dedicated three-prong outlet. You can use an adapter, but only if it is properly installed and actually screwed in to provide proper ground. Note that some outlet boxes may not be grounded at all, so the adapter will not function as intended in those cases.
