Hi Katrina! This laptop may be a great choice for student work, home computing, and leisure gaming. The laptop comes with a power supply (charging adapter). We suggest that you review the game developers' sites for system requirements to ensure that this laptop will be a good fit.

I will point out that this is a large laptop (which I personally love) and it's heavier so it may not be desirable for someone who is mobile. I would have him physically pick it up, test putting it in his backpack, etc. to ensure it doesn't feel too heavy. Gaming laptops are a lot more expensive because their technology is much better than this. The HP response noted "leisure gaming" so you can probably count on this as not having the power for a serious gamer. It comes with only the power cord (no mouse or other peripherals.) It has a trial for Office 365 but you'll have to either buy the subscription after that or purchase the permanent software. Or he might be satisfied using Google's version of Office 365 which is free w/ a gmail account. I personally love this computer so I do recommend it but you just need to ensure if satisfies the personal needs for your son.

How old is your son is, what grade level is he at or will be entering soon, what is his school like, what games does he like to play or might he want to play, all come into play. If he is pre-college and would play entry-level games, on average he would be fine. If he would be enrolling in advanced classes or specialize in some difficult field, he might need something more, and the same is true if he is interested in AAA games or something along those lines. In those instance, you and he should contact the school and ask for their recommendations, and check the websites of the relevant games for their requirements.
