• This Extractor will pass the video signal from a source device into the HDMI input on your TV and the sound signal to your stereo.

• Yes, that is it's intended purpose. It will take the HDMI source (DVD player, Apple TV, etc) and seperate the audio and video. Another HDMI "out" port will take the video on to your older TV while stereo audio (or 5.1 surround) can be used by 3.5mm stereo and optical outputs to your receiver. Or you can send audio to your headphones, soundbar, or other audio device.
