“Is there a function where you can search for pictures on the frame itself? I know you can upload photos remotely in the app, but is the app also used for displaying? How does the owner of the frame pick what particular photo they want to view?”

The photos to be displayed can be selected by the user through creating albums. User-created albums are then selected which then would determine which collection of photos would be used to be displayed on the Nixplay Frame.
