It looks like one button switches the function from watch to monitor. When in monitor mode, is the HR a continuous readout? Or does the wearer have to push the button again every time one wants to see current heart rate?

It's continuous... do some jumping jacks and you'll see. Sometimes upon startup the chest strap doesn't register well until you sweat.
