• It is backwards compatible with cd's, dvd's and standard blu rays. It will also play 3D blu rays. The upcoming Panasonic will play all the above mentioned except 3D blu rays.

• Yes, and it upscales all backwards compatible media (Blu Rays, DVDs) to higher definition quality. Thus, standard DVDs will look better than they have ever looked in any other machine you have played them in.
