Is it independent or do I need another device null

Not sure what you mean by "independent." You'll need a computer to load and charge it. I guess you could have someone else load it with content and use an AC/USB plug to charge it. (I'm not sure what they're called, but they'll look something like this photo.) You also can use it independently as an FM radio.

No other devices needed I put all my cds on my laptop plugged this Into it and loaded all my on to my mp3 player And have it set on shuffle
