“We have just bought a Seagate 1Tb Slim External hard Drive with the intent to load games on it rather than clog up our computer storage. We have been told that the loading via USB would be too slow so not an option. Any thoughts?”

I thought it seemed very slow to download my photos and documents. But once I understood I had to download them via Control Panel, it just took a few seconds. I tried downloading from this Seagate itself but it I couldn't really download anything and I don't understand how to access this hard drive that way. So, I tried to think outside the box, and tried to download to the drive with Control Panel in Windows 10 via my desktop, and it went much more smoothly like that. I would think downloading whole game programs may run a little slowly and take a few minutes,, but once the downloading is done, accessing from the Seagate is very fast. I found it faster than from my computer itself. About games, maybe it works differently with them because they are much bigger in terms of how many bytes used just to function, and I have seen ads on BB that talk about other backup drives that work better with games. I would do your research and get a Seagate specifically geared for games, if that's the brand that has worked for your previously.
