Hi David , It's the same technology as your cellphone . As long as you connect the earphones it's disconnects the tv speakers because the system is recognizing the need to connect earphones. If you want you can buy a splitter and connect your headphones and an external speaker/soundbar. Hope I have answered your question. Thank you
