No, this connects to a car or home stereo system. He could have this in a car or home and listen on his phone while on the train with the Sirius XM app, it actually works pretty well.

He could buy a streaming subscription for his phone and stream it on a train, as long as he had access to the Internet. The benefit of streaming to your phone is, there are more choices on stuff to listen to, some stuff can be rewound and fast forwarded.
