“Does Sony still require you to use their software to be able to download mp3 files to it for DRM protection from a certain PC, or can you just drag and drop files onto it from any pc of your choosing?”

I can't answer the question directly since I use Apple equipment. I was however, able to drag-N-drop my entire music collection from iTunes on my computer directly to the Walkman using Sony's "Content Transfer.app" for Mac.
