A few things you should know about the G-Technology G-DRIVE is that G-Technology is a Western Digital brand and that they design storage products with photographers and videographers needs in mind. No doubt most of us recognize the Western Digital name and are familiar with their great products. With transfer speeds as an important consideration for these photographers the G-Technology G-Drive is a fast USB 3.1 500GB external SSD hard drive. The specifications state that this drive features remarkable transfer speeds of up to 560MB/sec. Please note that the R in the name of this drive stands for rugged. This thing is wrapped in a rubberized and metal casing which is water and dust resistant. It is drop protected to 3 meters and is crush resistant up to 1000 pounds. I love the look of this drive. It looks cool with a grill look on the front which reveals a blue metallic layer. In pictures I thought this was a lighting effect when the drive was plugged in. It’s not but it still looks sweet. The drive is sleek and modern looking and measures a mere 3.74” x 1.97” x 0.57”. In the box you’ll find some manuals, a USB-C to USB-C cable, and USB-C to USB-A cable. The G-Drive is USB-C ready, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 3 compatible. Great flexibility. You should also know that this drive isn’t automatically recognized by a pc like other drives you may have used. The G-Drive comes ready for use with a Mac. It doesn’t even show up in the Windows disk management utility. To use with a pc you need to first visit their website and download a file that they call the Windows Wizard. This program will quickly format the drive for use with Windows. I planned to use the G-Drive for large video files. As I load files to the drive it’s speed is apparent. Large files transfer super fast. Upon benchmarking the drive I saw transfer rates well over 400 MB/second. Fantastic for my purposes.

This does the job for photographers & those that just want to store things overall. I personally use it to broadcast music within my car.

Plugged it in to the iMac and downloaded the back-up. Feel confident that it'll be there if I need it.

Awesome external ssd drive but I need a little more room for mine.

Out of the box the hard drive is ready for Mac, with a quick reformatting it was windows ready. (Reformatting is required for windows to access the full storage capacity of the hard drive.) The instructions to reformat the hard drive are included in a file on the drive, simply click the file and follow instructions and in less than a minute it was done. I was able to transfer 13gb of data in less than 4mins via usb 3.0, I could not believe how fast the transfer went! Viewing the files on drive on different computers went as expected, the drive functions like most plug in storage devices. The solid state drive is small and quite portable, I am please with this product so far.

Absolutely love the G-Drive mobile SSD R-Series comes with two 5-inches long cables: USB-3 (now called USB-A) and USB-C, so it works with a huge variety of laptops and/or PCs. The G-Drive mobile SSD R-Series comes pre-formatted with the MacOS Extended file system, and as such, though Windows 10 recognizes the drive, it does not appear in the "This PC" window, and as such, is not accessible / cannot be used as a backup disk under Windows 10 right away. However, as indicated on the packaging box, after formatting the drive with, for example, "ExFAT" (which enables read/write access for both operating systems, Windows and MacOS), Windows 10 not only recognizes the drive, but also shows it in the "This PC" window as "G-DRIVE mob" with an next-available drive letter assigned, perfect! As for speed, to take full advantage of the G-Drive mobile SSD R-Series you will need to use the USB-C connector. These are the speeds I achieved with a Windows 10 SSD (Solid State Drive, formatted NTFS) Laptop, copying 100 FLAC files, all of them between 15-40 MB of file size: - Copying files from PC-SSD to G-Drive: Up to 270 MB/s - Copying files from G-Drive to PC-SSD: About 415 MB/s Using the USB-3 connector to my Windows 10 SSD (Solid State Drive) Laptop, these are the speeds I achieved copying the same files as mentioned above: - Copying files from PC-SSD to G-Drive: Up to 265 MB/s - Copying files from G-Drive to PC-SSD: Up to 345 MB/s The ExFAT file system I selected for the G-Drive may have something to do with the slower speeds that I achieved from copying files from my Windows laptop to the exFAT-formatted G-Drive. But I chose ExFAT (as opposed to NTFS) as this is the only reasonably-fast file system that supports read/write access for both, Windows and MacOS laptops, which was more important to me than speed. I am giving this drive a well-deserved 5 stars as I love the USB-A (USB-3, which is backward-compatible to USB-2) and USB-C flexibility and, of course, the fact the G-Drive comes with a Solid State Drive (SSD), and as such, operates super-well without the need of external power. It is only slightly larger than a credit card, and about 11 credit cards thick. The same drive is also available with larger capacities, but 512GB serves me very well for backing up my files. Very highly recommended.

I now have 3 laptops that have USB-C drives and I wanted a hard drive that could work with all of these devices. I also wanted SSD, all of my devices have those drives, so should the portable drive. This has everything I wanted all in a small form factor that fits easily in my bag. Their support is awesome as well, I called and within minutes they helped me to format the drive so it works on Windows and Mac OS. It works on my Chromebook as well. Transfers are super fast and the drive is whisper quiet. This is a perfect little portable hard drive, I love it.
