Not a Streaming Device without Help

I obviously didn't understand what I was buying. My Sony nsz-gs7 can't stream Hulu Plus, something about being Google TV only, and I saw the Chromecast could. After purchasing the Chromecast, and hooking it up to the TV, it then wanted a device to pick up what you wanted to show on TV. What?! I thought you (Chromecast) were a streaming device? You simply want to be an intermediary between my, say tablet, and TV? What a waste of money. For $15 more, there a plenty of streaming devices that stand on their own, and actually do the streaming for you. They will even come with a remote controller of their own. I feel like one of the Looney Toon characters that goes over the cliff and turns into a donkey before falling.

    Overheating

First time using the Chromecast was great. Watched a one hour comdey show on Netflix. Disconneted it from TV and power source because it was really hot. After a few more uses the device is now freezing after a few mins and is overheating soon after that.

    Innovation at its finest?

Wow Google, this has all the access and functionality of my 5 year old blue ray player but let's me control it through my computer! Save your money, if you want to watch YouTube, its usually better on your computer. Even using the Google music app you cant play files stored locally. My only question is do I drive up now to return it, or wait until Monday when I'm already closer to the store.

    Terrible product

This device has been a nightmare. I'll get disconnected at least once a day, then won't be able to reconnect, then (for reasons i can't understand) my wifi passwords stop working. So to fix all this i have to reset my router ever time this happens. I have never been so disappointed in a device. I'm returning this peice of junk tomorrow. Save your money and don't buy this.

This video is not available for remote playback

I'm frustrated... most of the videos in youtube are not available to cast in Chromecast. I always get the mesage "This video is not available for remote playback"

    Needs a remote

It sucks, it would be easier to watch TV on my computer rather than control the television from my computer. When I controlled it with my tablet or phone it seemed to suck my battery power down even more. My perception of the device may have been altered because I have owned roku 3 unit for quite some time and I'm used to having my menu autoplay features. Just wasn't my cup of tea...

    Choppy sound

Easy to set up, but plagued by continuous choppy sound. Based on my internet research, seems to be a common issue. I'm returning today and buying an Apple TV.

Doesn't work well on my TVs

I tried this on two TVs, both a couple of years old, with the same result. The cast picture was blurry and sound and video were not in sync. I was casting from a 3 year old, quality laptop. In one case the TV and Laptop were about 30 feet from the router in the other case both were less than 6 feet from the router. There was no difference in performance. I tried every suggestion in the Chromecast online support with no improvement. I tested my network speed and it was fine. I was really looking forward to using Chromecast. Maybe the production version will be better.

    Horrible Lag, Overheats

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I loved my chromecast for about the first half hour. It's a great idea, poor execution. After using it for a half hour, the video streaming lags IMMENSELY and is just awful, to the point where I would rather just watch on my laptop (even when I switch to the low quality setting as suggested). The device also severely overheats, which worries me. I've heard this is a common problem for chromecast and that there is no way to fix it.

    Disappointing device

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I had great expectations, but the device let me down. After setting it and downloading the update it only manages netflix and you tube. The picture quality is very bad. Can not use data on my ipad, or photos or movies. Which I do with Itv from apple. The copy on the product info promises things that can't be done (at least yet), deceiving advertising.

    Complete garbage!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The setup screen came up right away but then would not connect to the router and the google chromecast website advised me to contact netgear. I had no idea this would be so difficult to set up. It's going back! What a waste. I should have read the negative reviews first. I'm not a computer geek who sits around reconfiguring my router. But I am quite savvy and resourceful. This was beyond the amount of time and energy I'm prepared to spend on it for the very little that this product will do.

    Stops working far too frequently

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

It really isn't worth puchasing since it stops so frequently. We have followed all of the suggestions and googled it repeatedly to try other things but it just won't work consistently enough to want to continue messing with it. If you really want a streaming device, I'd suggest trying the other item being promoted, the ROKU. I know nothing about it but it has to be better than the chromecast. I only selected a rating of one star because it would not let me proceed with a 0-star rating.

    Absolutely Terrible

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this after reviewing tons of web sites and was excited this might be what we need for at least Youtube on our TV. I set it up, turned it on, followed all advise tips for my Cisco E2000 router, still only the initial screen that said it found my Chromecast but couldn't connect to the internet. We are setting up now with S-video cable. Much cheaper and more content to watch. Returned to Best Buy. They said they are getting tons of them back and there was no questions asked. lol

    Terrible

This device was great for a few weeks. Then it crashed, spent days with a Google rep to get it working again but eventually became useless with the latest update. Google support is a really drawn out and frustrating experience and I'm not going through it again. I've scoured help forums and search engine galore and tried everything imaginable, this hunk of plastic is worth only the sum of the material used to make it. Don't bother. Mine is in the trash, a total waste.

I am a very techy person and this was the worse thing to setup. It kept going back and forth with new device... I would set it as a new device, then my iPhone nor my iPad would see it again after that. I spent over 2 hours to set this stupid thing up. I am going to switch back to a Ruku device.

    Doesn't Work, Returning It

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased a Chromecast after my brother got one. Thought it was a really cool idea. Got it, plugged it into the back of my TV. Connected the power supply. Tried from my phone and two different laptops running two different OS's (Windows 7 and Windows 8.1). Can't connect to it. It just throws an error message "could not connect to your chromecast". AP isolation is disabled on my router. I'm very disappointed and will be returning this tomorrow.

    Ruined my HDMI ports

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this and used it 3 times in about 24 hours. The next time I tried to use it, it wouldn't work even though it was visible on my network. After hours of troubleshooting, we found that it had fried all of the HDMI ports on our TV!!! The HDMI port on our TV did not provide power so it was powered through the USB port. Not sure if this caused the power surge or not, but this little $35 item is going to cost me a new TV.

It just worked for 2 days then stop to work. I contacted google for help and spent about an hour but no luck. Google was suppose to contact me back within 48 hours to get my information to replace it with a new one, but not so far.... I think you get what you pay. Apple TV or other brands are more expensive but works fine with a lot of apps too. Looks we are paying for google to text their device noting more.

    Poor quality, DOA

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

DOA. Very frustrating. Well, the packaging is nice. Includes a 2"HDMI extension cable, the USB cord for power, and a USB power plug in case you don't have a USB port nearby. Instructions say: 1. Plug it in. 2. Switch (TV's) input (to find the device/port). 3. set it up (via a browser at google/chromecast/setup) Mine does nothing. Tried powering via USB port and a wall outlet.
