Now that I try it after updating the firmware as recommended, audio does not carry with it, even after restarting adapter and laptop. on top of that now it disconnects randomly.

Thanks for letting us know about this. If video plays on the connected display, but audio comes from your device or not at all, try the following:
Select the search box in the taskbar, type sound, and in the search results, select Sound.
Select Playback > Speakers/Intel WiDi > Set Default > OK

It doesn't play well with anything else like Apple devices, however. I did have some issues with my work computer so if you have any networking restrictions, this may not be for you.
