bought this item in February 2, 2020 with one free year of 4G LTE service.. by May 31, 2020 the service was disconnected and couldn't send back to best buy or manufacturer and would have to pay another $219 for service for a year on top of the fact i had already bought this item for $389 brand new.. please dont invest in this item EVER!! dead paper weight now!

I think this Owlcam dash camera is a great camera for car security. It was easy to install and easy to operate. I think it has great features that are easy to access with the mobile app.

It’s a great camera but makes a continuous sound which is very annoying when you do Uber for a living

This was the best invention and worked great but now the company is out of business and the services are no longer available you can’t access your footage or view your history anymore so it’s just a worthless price of junk now and I’m out of 350 dollars that I can’t get back

Camera worked great until I switched phones. At which point I followed the instructions to pair the new phone. Once paired I would get notifications about movement but never have access to the videos. I’ve contacted support countless times over the period of 5 months or so have never heard back once.

Does as it says. I will purchase again if I have to. Only problem is it discourages viewing recordings via mobile internet by charging a lot of money.

Was great at first but company went bankrupt over the pandemic and stopped working.

This was my first dash cam and I’m SO happy that I waited for this product to get one. Working in insurance a dash cam is a must these days especially in metro Atlanta. The setup process was VERY easy and simple you just scan the QR code and go from there. The mount is very sturdy and doesn’t budge at all. The camera itself is very sleek and the touchscreen is very good you don’t have to tap too hard or anything like that. The picture quality? AMAZING in my opinion. I’ve showed some family and they said the same thing when I screenshot and sent pictures of the car. Very clear, very crisp. The features are of course what makes this product what it is. Being able to have accident/ damage protection, 911 features without having to answer if you’re in distress all while having the peace of mind knowing that help will be on the way is great. Being able to have protection inside and outside of the car while you’re at home, work, or just shopping around puts your mind at ease. Also an amazing tool for those who drive using rideshare services. As a woman I feel much more secure. They also take pride in how they store your data. Only YOU have access to your footage. Only con is it’s a little noisy at times. It kind of hums/static sound which I read in another review on here and that is true. I don’t know if I’m used to it now or it’s not all of the time that it does that but, not enough to take away from the product for me. Owlcam seems to be a great company and they made s great product.

Pretty awesome dash cam, installed it at the parking lot and i love the notifications i get is someone is too close to my car.

I installed it and quickly found out that they will forever have their hands in your wallet. Don't waste your time and money. I since changed to a camera that doesn't charge me to view footage on a camera I paid for.

This is great for your piece of mind and video capture of an event if needed. This my second unit for the new vehicle.

I've never had a dash cam but now that my daughter will be driving I thought it may be a good idea. I am very impressed with the OwlCam. First, we tried it on my car as we haven't gotten one my daughter will be driving to college yet. It is very easy to install and will be just as easy to take out and move to her car when it is time. I did it a bit backward as I placed the camera first and brought the line down to the port. There was extra line but duct tape is my friend. The installation was easy, proven by the fact I could do it. The app was easy to download and it is quite simple to synch up the camera to your phone. We just went with the daughter's phone immediately since it will go into her car but it doesn't seem that there will be a problem if you end up having it move to another car and re-synching to the phone of the person who will be driving it. I was pleasantly surprised by the connection as our area can have sketchy coverage but I saw no problems at this time. The videos are clear and crisp and I had no problems with zooming in to get greater detail. The voice commands worked well but you can also push buttons as well. I had fun playing with it when I went to a conference 2 hours away but it was funny to get a text from my daughter on just what videos were sent to her phone. After all, I had to see what would happen if someone bumped the car, someone tried to break into the car, if I bumped into something, etc. I really like that the camera shows not only what happens outside the car but also inside the car and the camera screen can be split to show both. I would have loved that when the kids sat in the back seat so I could see just who was the first one to put a finger over on the other kid's side. Overall, I'm quite happy with the OwlCam and know I will feel much better with my daughter driving to college every day now that there will be a record of anything that happens when she's driving.

Great dash cam, sends alerts to my phone whenever someone is close to my car, wish I would have bought this sooner!

Had this camera for 7 months and frequently doesn’t work or connect to phone. When it “goes offline” it does not record so no history is available. Had car broken into last night, camera went offline, no footage available to help police with finding suspect. I’m returning this camera.

This is my first dash cam, so I don't have much to compare it with, but so far it seems pretty good. Setup was a breeze, and I was up and running in less than 5 minutes. The video quality, and field of view is very good and I certainly have no complaints. It being connected to, and powered by, the OBDII port in your car means it knows when the car is on or off, and it adjusts its operation and power consumption accordingly, so it doesn't drain the battery as much while your car is off. Obviously if you car is going to be sitting for an extended period of time, and you don't need the protection of the cam, it might still be smart to unplug it. While the car is off, it doesn't record video, unless something triggers it (interior motion, glass breaking, or being shaken). When this happens, it will record a clip and send you an alert on your phone. So far this has meant I get an alert everytime I get into my own car. While it is off, you can also connect to it from your phone and get a live view of inside or outside, or download clips. However, since this is over a cell connection, video quality can vary depending on the reception the cam is getting. If you download the clips, you'll get the full quality video though. Generally, where my car is parked most of the day it has poor cell reception, so streaming video is low quality, and attempting to download clips is slow and clunky. I'd prefer to get in the car, where my phone will connect to it and it is a bit faster (no apparent progress bar though is unhelpful). Personally, I found the app a bit clunky; I couldn't easily tell if I was directly connected to the cam, and sometimes trying to view clips it would use the LTE connection (and waste minutes), instead of directly connecting. One of the most annoying things about this is, and maybe it's just mine, is it buzzes. I think it's the speaker, because connecting to it from my phone is a surefire way to get it to start buzzing, and you can also hear a "pop" sound when connecting to it too. Sometimes the buzzing eventually stops, but until then, it's extremely annoying and I can hear it over the road noise and radio. Also, overheat protection already kicked in for me, even in just 80 degree heat in NY. Once I opened the windows and air started moving it cooled off enough to start recording again, but I have to wonder how well this will hold up in even warmer climates.

As usual with my reviews, I’ll start with the packaging to assess if it is both functional and reasonably ecological. The OwlCam is very well package with minimum waste; several pieces are included to give the user a range of installation options re height and wire routing. Very nice. For a consumer product that needs to stand out on a shelf, it is as eco-friendly as could reasonably be expected. But, and it’s a big exception, both the packaging and the set-up guide leave out important information. Critically, this dashcam does NOT draw its power from the traditional 12V source (i.e., “cigarette lighter”) outlet. It only can connect to the vehicle via the OBDII port under the dash. One could look forever and never find this information on the packaging. I suspect some people, familiar with less complex dashcams, will be surprised or disappointed or confused and that the company will experience more returns than is necessary. It’s an important packaging omission. Increasingly, other consumer devices are using this port including those from insurance companies and accident-detection services. Splitters are available in a range of prices from third-party vendors and from OwlCam. Second, the installation guide primarily uses graphics and supplemental text. Interestingly, there is no information that the camera itself has a very small on/off switch. (It is unlabeled and the same color as the camera body.) So, if one follows the directions in sequence one will wonder why the camera does not come on when the engine starts. Surprise! Find the little button and things to go better. As for the various parts of the camera’s mount, they seem well made, well designed, and carefully considered. Indeed, the mounting options are elegant, but all require the camera be installed near the bottom of the windshield. Three “tails” are included for adjusting the height. The recommended 5” worked perfectly for my vehicle. There are, however, some issues with routing the wiring from the OBDII port to the camera: First, I tried it in two vehicles (an Audi and a Mazda) to route the wire between the dash and windshield as recommended, using the provided tools. In an older car, the routing recommendation might work, but in these two newer SUVs the rake of the windshield and the tolerances between the dash and the glass were too tight to get any of the wire hidden. Second, when the wire reaches the “suction beam” to which the camera mounts, there are well-designed routing indents for the wires. But why would you want these facing the interior? The sleek design and appearance are diminished by the needless visibility of the wire which, it would seem, could be easily places against the windshield. Once installed, I was immediately aware of how very small the camera is, which is great unless you need to look at the screen to get instant information. Spit horizontally between the exterior view and interior view (the latter can be hidden by a simple swipe enlarging the exterior view) the images are about the size of a large stamp. Clearly, like so many products today, the intent is to use the ubiquitous phone as the primary viewing device. Functionally, the camera works well. Initially I relied on factory default settings which had the unfortunate tendency to send me a message every time my wife or I walked by the front of the vehicle in our garage and preserved a “clip.” It took a little digging, but in the Settings I found I could select the type of notifications I received and eliminate some of the annoyance. I am still trying to troubleshoot a wide range of erroneous notification with the help of OwlCam Support. If the vehicle were parked on a street or in a public garage, the number of alerts would be excessive and annoying. To save a random view, the driver or passenger needs to say an attention command (“OK, Presto”) and then is given a moment to name the “clip,” such as “Deer in Road.” Clips are supposed to be about 20 seconds long (per conversation with company representative) but mine tended to be briefer. They were, however, very clear and easy to see on the phone. In case of an accident, the camera will keep recording (a very critical function) until power is turned off, but a swipe on the camera’s screen will keep it recording longer. The software, critical to using and benefiting from the dashcam, works well, although sometimes a bit slow to load. Like the camera itself, the software is functional and thought-through for maximum ease of use. In sum, this is a high-quality dashcam with many functions (albeit some more frills than essential) that should last a long time. Everything about it feels solid, well-made, substantial. The privacy assurances seem reasonable and consumer friendly. Overall, an excellent device.
