A compact innovative drone breaking the mold

I bought this drone as a replacement to the Autel X-Star Premium. My top considerations while researching drones were portability, camera quality and flight time. On paper the Parrot Anafi met all these requirements. I have had this drone and now have flown it three full times. I must say up till today I had debated on returning it. My biggest issues with this drone are the slow battery charges and the range. I found a 900+ thread on the internet and found workarounds to those issues. So lets start with what I really like and what I've found to resolve my issues (which is why I'm keeping it and giving it 4 stars). I love the drones simplicity. The Parrot app is really nice, intuitive and works well on Android. Within minutes of pulling it from the box I was able to update the firmware of the controller and drone. My first few flights were easy and fun. I didn't find any control lag as some people have reported. The camera is excellent IMO and I love the ability to lookup, down and to zoom in and out. I feel the camera is heads above my old X-Star. I like that Parrot put a simple cap on the camera instead of the difficult gimbal cap and holder on the X-star. I felt the controller was sort of reminiscent of a toy but after using it I'm really happy with the feel, balance and weight of it. I did find as others commented that my Galaxy S9+ could sit in the holder better but it works fine. Take offs and landings are a snap and you can even launch it in the hand (I haven't yet). Overall I really like the simplicity of the product. Did I mention that Parrot bundles the Anafi in a nice soft case too? So why did I want to return it? Well the battery charges horribly slow and I only have a single battery. I found that Parrot recommends a USB PD Charger with a USB C to USB C cable. This will charge the battery in 105 minutes. My other gripe was the range. It was OK and probably comparable to my old drone but I wanted more. I found by changing it to 5.8Ghz and setting my phone to airplane mode I got a lot more range. So I'm really pleased with the Anafi. Other issues I can live with. I don't like the SD card holder but I remove the battery to charge it so popping the card out isn't that big a deal. I guess if you charge the drone from your laptop you can access card and transfer the data though (I haven't tried that). I dislike how everything in the Parrot app is in metric. I am hoping they will update it latter so we can have feet and miles in the US. For those that compare it to the Evo and Mavic I don't feel its a comparison. This drone plays in a different class with its own positives and negatives. As I stated, flight time, portability and camera were my biggest wishes and Parrot delivers. I don't want to lug a big case around. Would I like obstacle avoidance sure but I don't want to sacrifice portability and flight time. Plus shouldn't you be flying your drone not counting on the AI to avoid that tree branch or high wire? So what would make this a 5 star review? How about bundling a second battery, including the USB PD charger and cable, making feet and miles an option in the Parrot software for the US market.

    Missing Some Key Features

If I were to mention every single detail of this Parrot ANAFI drone, this review would be so long that no one would read it, so I’ll focus on a few key points. First off, this drone is extremely light weight. So light in fact that I was convinced that it wouldn’t withstand strong winds. As it happens, the day I tested this drone, it was very gusty out. Although the wind moved it about some, I thought it held its own. Parrot boasts a 25 minute battery life, that’s only when flown in ideal conditions. I got about 19 minutes due to its bout with the wind. The drone comes with a USB-C charging cable, but not with the actual charger. You’ll have to use your phone/USB charger. The remote control is pretty large, but not large enough to hold a larger phone if it’s housed in a case (I have a Note 8). So be prepared to remove your phone case every time you want to fly this thing. I ended up using my iPod, it worked great. Parrot was thoughtful enough to include a protective carry case for the drone, but not for the remote control, so you need to purchase a case to transport it. Now for the missing features: - There is no Obstacle Avoidance feature on this drone! If you want to fly this thing around trees (or anything else), you’d better have a deft touch with the remote, or else it will blindly fly into any obstacle. - There is no Follow Me feature included with this drone. You’ll have to make an In-App purchase to utilize this feature. - The Flight Plan feature is also an In-App purchase. The 4K video and HDR makes for some pretty impressive results. The camera is a very generous 21 megapixels. The 4K video is awesome! This unit also boast 180 degree tilt. This allows you to look directly above and below the drone. I really like that feature! There is a 16gb microSD card, with an adapter included to allow you to insert the card into your computer. Be very careful when removing and reinserting the card in the drone, the mechanism is small and delicate, I can see the tiny metal securing plate become easily broken. If it’s broken, there’s no way to secure the SD card in place. If you have a caveman’s touch, better let someone else perform the procedure. Despite its (glaring) negatives, I still like this drone. I’m looking forward to exploring more of its capabilities. I can’t wait to go the park and fly this puppy over the gorge! Pros: - Beautiful 4K video - 21mp camera - 25 minute battery life - 180 degree tilt with the gimbal - Lightweight and portable Cons: - No obstacle avoidance - In-App purchases for Follow Me and Flight Plan - Remote control is too small for large phones

The first two times I flew it it performed more or less as advertised. Being my first drone I didn't know just how many things can go wrong but spec wise it seemed like a good deal. I wish they would add software to to keep it from taking off it it's going to decide to commit suicide as soon as it does. If you are careful I still think this is a good buy but don't be in a rush like me.

For the price, you might as well invest in a Mavic Air. This drone does not have safety sensors and lacks the overall polish within the app that is coon with DJI drones. The only pro I would like to mention is the battery life when compared to the Mavic Air. Although both drones are considered portable, the extra features and higher quality control of the Mavic Air make the Anafi the inferior purchase.

Stunning Images, Quiet Flight, No Object Avoidance

It's clear from watching the footage of my first few flights that Parrot put a lot of emphasis on image quality in the Anafi. The photos and videos I've taken so far have been truly stunning. Resolution up to 4K has been sharp and clear, although the higher "sport/action" frame rates are only available at HD resolution. The ability to rotate the camera lens up and down has allowed me to get video that other drones couldn't have captured. Also, I'm very impressed with the lossless zoom. The Anafi is relatively easy and quiet to fly. It's responsive and is reasonably good at maintaining stable hover. There is some drift, especially when the wind is blowing, but the avionics self-adjust accordingly, and the software does a good job of removing motion from the video footage. Operators always do need to remember, however, that Anafi has no object avoidance sensors. It will respond to instructions right into a tree, a fence, a wall, etc. I’d prefer an option that helps avoid crashes even if it meant giving up a bit of control while that feature is activated. The Anafi charges via USB-C, which is becoming much more standard for phones, laptops, and chargers. It folds up neatly into a travel case that’s about the shape of a water bottle, but the joysticks on the controller can’t be removed or folded down, so they could get damaged if you just toss it into a bag. The controller has a spring mounted bracket to hold a mobile phone – my phone has a rounded edge that’s not the same in the front and the back, and so it wants to pop out of the bracket if I don't get it lined up just perfectly. I’ve tried a few other Phones with more squared edges and they fit much more securely. The Parrot Pro Flight 6 app is available for iPhone and Android, and offers a lot. I found the organization of some features and settings a bit counterintuitive at first, but am learning where the settings and options I’m looking for are located, and finding them well described on screen and easy to use. I mostly use manual flight mode, but Pro Flight 6 has several helpful auto-pilot moves. For example, Boomerang has you select your subject on the screen so the Anafi can fly out out and back in for some great dramatic shots. Cameraman keeps the camera focused on the selected subject (rotating the Anafi’s body, moving the camera angle up and down, etc.) as you manually fly around it. I was annoyed that with a product like this, some of the features (including the very useful follow-me, and the option to set a flight plan on a map in advance) require in-app purchase of an upgrade. Overall, I’m very happy with the images and videos that I’ve already captured with the Anafi, and I look forward to making lots of beautiful mini-movies with it. There are a few things that I would have improved upon, but overall, I would recommend this to anyone who doesn’t mind being extra diligent about piloting their drone around obstacles in exchange for great image quality.

This was my first foray into a drone and the ANAFI seemed like a good entry point. Not having the slightest idea what I was doing it was going to be a "learn as you go" activity. First things, it is a fairly compact unit compared to others and come with a carrying case it can fold up into. It is small enough to toss in a backpack and go. The drone with the battery weighs about 3 pounds so it is easy to transport. The remote it quite hefty weighing about as much if not more than the drone but it has a good feel to it and is comfortable to hold. I have an iPhone X with a case and it did not fit well in the controller with the case on so it was kind of a pain to have to remove the case to use the phone with the controller. Without the case it was fine. Getting everything connected was pretty simple but be aware there are not detailed written instructions. Some things to be aware of with the ANAFI that I didn't know out of the gate. Takeoff is easy with the push of a button! You can also use the button to land if you don't do it manually. Something I didn't know to even look for in a drone is proximity sensors. Apparently, some have side and rear sensors so they won't fly into trees or walls. The ANAFI does not have these so pay attention to where you are flying. I did fly sideways into a wall. (not good!) Bottom line, especially for a beginner, start in an open area and go slow! And above all, don't panic! I'm still working up to some of the more advanced things but basics work well. The clarity of the camera is 4K and displays well on my phone while flying. It has a memory card included so you can download all your video to your computer if you'd like. Surprisingly, some of the features like "follow me" are an additional cost. It's only .99 cents but why not just include it? Week one I did damage my drone and will need to have some repairs done but I think long term I will be very happy with it.
