First one I purchased crashed after 2 days

First one I purchased crashed after 2 days. Returned defective drive to Best Buy and WAS NOT Offered any incentive because the drive was defective... a bummer. Drive has VERY SLOW transferring speed of files from my laptop computer by way of coaxial cable as suggested by Seagate instructions. Also transfers files slow wirelessly. Not easy to setup and transfer files. Once a individual profile is setup and did not want... could not delete profile... If transfer stopped, had to start over... a bummer... I asked and Best Buy would not transfer data from several older drives from crashed computers to the new Seagate drive...

Getting a big external backup drive for all our family's devices was one of the smartest things I have done lately. Set up separate files for everyone, wife's and 4 kids devices. Now laptops are not cluttered and bogging down. Wireless backup through home wifi is easy. Do yourself a favor and get one of these.

The Seagate was easy to install, work right away and allows me to store a great deal. I am not sure yet how to use it for regular and recurring computer back ups

An Ocean of Storage Space

Ok, so I did my homework before I bought knowing I wanted a 4 TB network drive within a reasonable home purchase type budget. The research basically told me I had 2 choices. Between the two choices, reviews I've read showed me this one was the more reliable of the two. I read about the small seagate storage drives hoping things would be similar. It came down to taking a chance on this drive.
What I like...
1. it plugs directly into your network with an Ethernet cable. Since I planned to send some of my security footage to it, I didn't want it sitting next to a computer for a thief to steal if they broke in
2. The amount of storage space is awesome!
3. Being able to share it with DLNA devices on my network
4. Ability to map a drive to it
What I don't like
1. Uploading groups of files over the network is really slow even if you do what they suggest connecting it at 1GB and turning off it's services while uploading. I have no idea what that's all about but I do know sending a folder of files all at one time is really slow.
2. To access it outside the network requires the user to log in through Seagate instead of an IP address.
3. As far as I've seen, their backup software is not for fully backing up your computer's hard drive.

Nice to have extra external storage, but there are tweaks needed to make it run well with a Mac and iTunes. We had to research and figure out for ourselves those tweaks.

Cell phones and tablets have limited storage. But with a home router and computer you can use this drive to store your pictures, music, backups and documents. No need to rent cloud space from vendors.

Allows you to access movies or music from any device without using up storage on said device. I put all my music and movies on it and can watch or listen to them on my tv's in other rooms or my phone, tablet or computer without having to download them.

The drive is outstanding in every aspect. I'm the only one on my PC and I have to have a password to access the drive and I've not found a way to eliminate the password requirement but this is an outstanding external drive. I recommend it to anyone who wants an external drive.
A lot of bang for the buck

I am using this primarily for Time Machine, and it works well. The initial backup needs to be done with the Mac physically connected to the same switch as the Seagate device, the time went from days to hours to backup 1TB. Once that initial backup is done, you can do the subsequent backups wirelessly. Tested restores and all works well. Wonderful product for a Time Machine destination.

The first unit I purchased was a fail: I was about 25% through my installation when the unit shut down. Subsequent attempts revealed a totally unreliable power connection...the unit would just lose power. There was no help from Seagate, but, after an unplanned second trip to Best Buy, the retailer swapped the unit for a fresh one with no questions asked. Then I had to start over.
I've had no power or installation issues with the second unit. It does seem much slower to access than I would expect. Then, suddenly about a month after installation, I was unable to write anything to the drive, even when I was connecting as the administrator over the same network connection and from the same computer. Seagate told me to connect via cifs rather than afs. Not a huge problem, but NOT something a home user is going to want to worry about.
Also inconvenient is the fact that every user gets their own secure folder on the drive...a good thing except for the fact that the administrator account cannot see these drives or how much of the capacity they may be using. The only option is to delete the user or log in as the user...but the administrator cannot see the user's credentials if they have been changed.
Another small detail that really annoys me...the power light is recessed below the perforated case on the top of the unit. It's the only physical indication of the drive's status, and you can't see it unless you are looking directly down onto the top of the drive.
Yes, I would recommend the product...but with a warning.

Good capacity, easy to set up. Supposed to be able to stream to smart TV's !! Won't stream to any of mine with DLNA except a Panasonic 65VT50 plasma, not good! Won't stream to any of my Blue Ray DVD players either, except my OPPO BD65. This rather makes it pointless to attach it to a router, might as well just have a network drive
