This is my review of the SkullCandy Crusher 540 Active XT Wireless Over-ear Headphones, upon which I rate at 5 out of 5 stars.
Out of the box, these headpones come with a USB-A to USB-C charging cable, a 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable, a carrying bag, instructions, and a quick-start guide. From first impressions I like these headphones as they are foldable and fit nicely as to pack and carry on the go to the gym or other activities. The battery is rated for playtime up to 40hrs and allows a 10min quick charge providing 4hrs of playback. The over the ear breathable ear cushions allow to absorb sweat as to not slip of your head and are noise isolating, but not noise canceling.
As for the headphone operation, it has a Skullcandy app to allow access to the equalizer for settings of music, podcasts, and movies. There is also a personal sound customization test as to tailor the sound output based upon your hearing capabilities. Lastly in the app is a link to a Tile app that may be installed on your smartphone as to locate your headphones with its built-in Tile finding technology.
The buttons on the headphones are well laid out and big as to easily locate. On the left ear is the power button/bluetooth paring button, below that having an amazing base control providing multisensory bass. Below that is the USB-C jack and below that the 3.5mm jack. On the right ear is the volume up/track forward button, a play/pause button including call answer/end, and volume down/previous track button.
As for use and playback, the headphones fit well over your ears along with a padded headband. As with the description of the buttons in the previous paragraph, I find all the buttons easy to locate and operate. There is no app needed to access any special feature that cannot be found as a physical button except for the equalizer. I did reference that the bass on these headphones is adjustable with the sliding switch and are "Multi-Sensory". This means not just the level of bass can be adjusted but also the physical thumping /vibration of the ear cushions. To take these out for a test, I picked one of my favorite pop artists having a bass-ey back-track. WOW, I was blown away with the amount of bass and vibration I was experiencing. This brings these active headphones to a new level. I can see them putting a couple extra step or reps in your workout. I highly suggest you run, don't walk, to pick up a pair of these headphones to compliment your active lifestyle.
I hope you enjoyed reading my review and it helped in your purchasing decision.

With the Skullcandy Crusher 540 Active you have to take the good with the bad.
Let's start with the aesthetic and build quality. These headphones are unassuming. Nothing flashy, just a simple design that fits into a basic aesthetic, and that's not a bad thing. They are lightweight, comfortable, and decently made. The feel isn't what I would call luxurious or premium, but they are far from cheap or fragile.
One thing I really appreciate are the controls. The buttons are easily distinguishable due to the convex and concave differences in design, which makes track and volume changes really easy. The bass slider, while somewhat niche, is a nice touch. A song comes on where you want a little more or less bass? No problem, just move the slider.
Connections are easy and stable. I've had no issues with dropped Bluetooth connections. Pairing is simple and straightforward. I paired this with a MacBook Air M3, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6.
Sound quality is decent. Bass is deep, highs are clear and crisp, and mids are easily distinguishable. I watched YouTube, played music on Spotify, and listened to audiobooks all with better than average results. Audiophiles will find plenty to complain about, but for average, everyday users the sound quality should be more than sufficient.
These headphones allow a LOT of ambient sounds in, especially at low volume levels. Listening in a quiet room or area is actually quite nice. However, using these in a room where there is conversation, tv, or other noises can be distracting. I found myself having to increase the volume more than normal to help drown out other sounds.
As mentioned, the headphones are comfortable even with 1+ hours of wear. You don't completely forget you're wearing them, but they do somewhat disappear from existence. The ear cups are breathable and fit well over the ear. The band over the head hasn't seemed to push or cause discomfort.
Battery life is stellar. I think 40+ hours is advertised, and I'd say that's about right. Over the course of a week, with 2 to 3 hours of use each day, I had about 25% battery remaining.
An area where I'm not impressed is the accompanying app. While I didn't take away any of the "star" rati g on this review for the app, it is worth mentioning. There is something Skullcandy calls Personal Sound in the app, which optimizes audio levels to your unique hearing. Does it work? Eh, I think there was some difference before vs after, but I would not say it was anything impactful. The biggest miss to me is the equalizer, or lack thereof. Yes, there is an equalizer, but it has only 3 presets for music, podcast, and movie, but no personalization. So if you're looking to really fine tune your audio experience you're going to be disappointed. This is a big miss for me.
So overall I would have given the Crushers a 3.5 star rating, but that's not an option. They're comfortable, produce average to decent sound, and have excellent battery life. As long as you can deal with minimal customization and potential ambient noise distractions, these might just fit the bill.

So I'm going to be completely honest here. I've never experienced technology like what the Crusher 540 offers. The sensory bass experience is the closest to getting into a vehicle with an insane amount of bass the way it vibrates your ears/head. I completely was not expecting what I experienced when I turned that bass knob up. I had to immediately show everyone I know who I knew would appreciate it.
On top of all that you get sweat/water resistant nano coating, breathable fabric ear cushions and a "clamp force secure fit" headband that grips your head and prevents these from rocking back and forth while you're on the treadmill or running or whatever you do. The crusher 540 also have usb c charging which is perfect because everyone has usb-c charging cords all over their houses now. The battery life on these is insane. Up to 40 hours of battery life. I've owned these for a few weeks, never charged them used them quite a bit and they're still sitting at 90%. The skullcandy app offers a few nice features like EQ that has 3 settings Music, Podcast and Movies. These can also be put on the Tile network so they can be easily found, if lost.
Those are all nice features but if you're a bass guy/girl and you have an active lifestyle, you need to at least check these out. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

The Crusher 540 Active are an excellent pair of wireless headphones to consider for working out. They are sweat- and water-resistant, and the earpads are made of breathable cloth that helps cool your ears during intense workouts. Battery life is rated at up to 40 hours, and if you’re in a hurry, just 10 minutes of charging provides up to 4 hours of playback. However, if you’re not a fan of bass-heavy headphones, the Crusher 540 Active may not be for you.
I’ve heard of the Crusher series before, but after experiencing them for the first time, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a pair of headphones that made it feel like a subwoofer was right next to my ears. These headphones are in another league when it comes to reproducing deep, rumbling bass. There’s a slider to control the bass level, and at the maximum setting, I can only tolerate them at half volume—anything higher makes my ears start to hurt. I’d recommend proceeding with caution when using them at both max volume and max bass. There’s also a companion app that provides EQ settings, including a personalized EQ based on your hearing, and a built-in Tile tracker to help locate the headphones if they ever get lost—similar to an AirTag.
One minor drawback for me is the lack of active noise cancellation (ANC). While they do get loud enough to drown out most background noise, I would have preferred built-in ANC. Without it, you end up increasing the volume to compensate, which isn’t ideal for long listening sessions. I’d rather be able to listen at a lower volume, as I can with ANC headphones, without relying on sheer loudness to block out noise. Overall, I really like the Crusher 540 Active headphones. They sound great—especially with that signature deep bass—are well built, and are excellent for watching movies as well.

Most Impressive Crusher Bass So Far

The 540 Actives have a nice solid feel to them. The metal in the headband not only creates a nice firm clamp around your ears, but also adds a layer of ruggedness to them. The cushion at the top has a thick feeling rubber that mimics memory foam. It’s very soft, and smooth, making it very comfortable and easy to clean. The plastic feels light, but still seems pretty solid. All the buttons are very pronounced and easy to find with just your fingers, as the locations and shapes make them very distinguishable.
The Volume buttons can also be used to skip through tracks by holding them down for one full second. The button between the volume buttons can be used to activate your assistant with a double press, or play and pause audio with a single click. The Single click can also answer and end calls. A three second hold seems to disconnect or reconnect your devices even though the product guide says that this action should activate Spotify Tap.
Because these are designed to be worn while working out. The design and features are pretty straight forward and simple with real buttons. It does not have any touch sensitive features like some other high end headphones.
The ear cuffs are a nice breathable fabric, to help keep your ears cooler while working out, or for just listening for extended periods of time. If the ear cuffs become soaked or get too dirty for any reason, they can be removed by placing each of your thumbs inside the ear cuff and pushing outward against the edges of the ear cuff. The cuff will stretch out and the separate from the headset. The cuffs can be put back on by lining up the plastic lip on the cuffs with the ridge on the headphones, and stretching them back into place.
Great sounding hepatic bass. The hepatic bass can be easily adjusted with the slide lever, the amount of bass and the impact can be changed on the fly. On other headsets you would either need to stop what you are doing and adjust the EQ settings or crank up the volume to hear more bass. Increasing the volume, runs the risk of causing damage to the eardrums. The huge advantage here is that you can still feel heavy hitting bass without blasting out your ear drums.
I have owned earlier Skullcandy Crusher models with the hepatic bass feature, and this one is the best with creating the most natural sounding bass to date. The previous models had more of a mechanical vibration feeling mixed with the audio. The Active 540s just sound like real bass audio at any level.
The sound in general is very nice. All the different frequencies are easy to hear without distortion, even with the bass set at max. The max volume is way to high for my ears. I was able to set the headphones down on my table (at max volume) and still hear them clearly from across the room. The singing still sounded good without distortion. I am not suggesting you use these as a Bluetooth speaker, because some instruments were too low frequency to carry across the room like this. But it does show the impressive amount of audio and power these headphones can put out. I typically only listen to these on the lower volume settings. Everything sounds good between 15% to 25% on the volume meter. Anything around 25% and higher starts to feel uncomfortable for my ears.
I listened to audio books, and several different kinds of music including rap, hip hop and various types of rock. Everything sounded great, and it was super easy to adjust the amounts of bass needed for each type of audio. Even though these headphones are not noise cancelling, they are noise isolating. Which basically means that while wearing these, you can still hear outside sounds at lower volumes, but they will be muffled a bit. Cranking up the volume really makes it difficult to hear anything else around you.
I would also like to add that while the audio might sound pretty loud in your ears, no one around you will be able to hear anything at all until you reach a volume of 50% or higher.
The other thing I would like to note is that these headphones do not have any directional audio features like surround sound, Adobe or otherwise. They do have great stereo features with left and right, but that’s it.
Using these for calls works pretty well. I had no problem at all hearing any of the incoming voices or audio. On the outgoing audio, the callers on the other end could hear me pretty good as well, but the microphones seem to pick up a good portion of the background audio as well. So, trying to use these for calls around a lot of other noises could be a bit problematic.
Overall, if you enjoy loud audio, and bass that you can feel at any volume, then these are the right headphones for you. The clamping feature works great with keeping the headphones in place while working out and even jogging. The fabric ear cuffs help to dissipate heat and provide some noise dampening, and are easy to remove and clean. The Bluetooth range is great. The buttons are real and easy to find and use, as opposed to the flat touch sensitive ones on some other headphones.
