Constantly going into safe mode
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When it works it's great. But it will constantly go into safe mode and won't turn on. I have had to bring it to geek squad 2 times. It also will go into night mode during the movie.

Great Sound...Not Great Picture
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased a top of the line Sony 4k Ultra HD TV with 240hz refresh and High Dynamic Range so I decided to revamp my entire theater system. I love Sony and already have an older Sony theater system so I decided to upgrade to this receiver and use my already installed Sony speaker system. I was pleasantly surprised in some areas and also disappointed in other areas. Here are my breakdowns: Happy- The system is easy to use once set up. You can easily flip through your inputs without much confusion (TV, Cable, Blu Ray, etc). Disappointed- It's not easy to set up mainly because the speaker wire inputs in the back are difficult to access. It definitely took me longer than usual to get everything plugged in because of the layout. Happy- Sound quality is what you would expect from Sony. The thing cranks and maintains the integrity of the sound without distortion. Disappointed- The sub-woofer out is not powered. My speaker system does not have a powered sub-woofer because it was powered from the DVD player receiver that came with the system. I have to purchase a separate powered sub-woofer to go with this. Happy- The range of sound options exceeded my expectations. Whether I'm watching football, a movie, Netflix, or just music from my phone, I can find a great setting for fantastic sound. Disappointed- The video pass through is not true 4k Ultra HD. When watching a 4K UHD movie I couldn't tell any difference between 4k and standard HD. I thought this whole 4k thing was a crock. Then I decided to plug my Blu Ray player directly into my TV and just run the sound separately to the receiver and...wow! 4k is amazing! The same was the case for watching TV. The picture was much better when I ran my cable box directly to my TV and just sent the sound to the receiver. Optimal set up is to use this receiver for just that...a sound receiver and not to pass through video. My overall take on this receiver is if you are looking for a great 7.1 channel receiver that is easy to use, has great sound, and cranks volume...you can't beat it for the price and I certainly recommend it! If you are insistent on running the video pass thru with your receiver I would keep looking for a more expensive rig.

truly awesome near fully featured best bang 4 buck
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had this for about 6 months now, I've used it every single day. i many use it in 5.1 with the 2016 Sony speaker line, but not the towers. I only have the satellite speakers, and use 4 of them for front A&B and back A&Bm, with an older Sony center speaker (unmarked, cannot find online) but from what I've heard, the matching center speaker is excellent. my subwoofer is the 8 inch Yamaha 2016 model, I paired it with satellite speakers because of room restrictions. its cable of 7 speakers and two subwoofers all at once, and the surround sound truly is awesome AND the easiest to use I've ever seen. it comes with a microphone that you plug in the front, and run a 30 second program while holding the microphone in your hand (I do it holding it close to my head) and the speakers play a tune that the microphone picks up, and judges the placement of the speakers and the distance from the microphone - automatically calibrating the surround. I've tested this, and put has always been within 6 inches of its measurement; Example - receiver said my rear rights surround speaker was 7' 8" from the microphone(my sitting position), and it was actually 7' 9". its quite accurate, and most of all its simple and fast. plenty of inputs - 4 hdmi in and 1 hdmi out, all of them 2.2 and capable of 4k HDR and 3D passthrough, with the receiver turned on or off. 2x component inputs and 1 output that is just a simple passthrough - no hd upscaling at all which I prefer(most new tvs do upscaling already). theres also 1 coaxial, and 1 optical input. I have tested all of them, and they all work perfectly every time. theres is a 1/4" headphone out jack not he front, a USB out for maintenance, and the calibration microphone I mentioned earlier. the sound of course is the most important, and boy does it sound awesome. I have yet to turn it up past 65(I don't know how high it goes) and 65 was only to test how loud it got and it was way, way too loud for any normal situation. it was loud, VERY loud, but there was literally zero noticeable distortion. with the speakers I mentioned and the subwoofer, there was zero detectable distortion even at super high volume. the surround sound setting are awesome, and they do exactly what they are supposed to and do it well. I personally think surround sound has a long way to go, but thats not the receiver thats dolby and company. the receiver receives signals, and interprets them as well as you would expect and it has never malfunctioned in 6 months of daily use(8-12 hours daily). one stereo mode 2.1, it sounds absolutely amazing. bass(very adjustable, to the point I think you can even subtract bass from the source or amplify it 50x). mids are solid, nothing is missing. trebles are crisp and clear, and don't miss a beat. all of it sounds awesome, especially at this price point. the build quality is outstanding, and solid. of course, its shell is aluminum I think so its not exactly superman strength but it is just a stereo - you place it, set it up and leave it. the case is very solid for what it is though, and the inputs/outputsd are VERY durable. I have for years obsessed over flimsy, cheaply made power cords and the way the cords like to wiggle loose over time(often not much time at all) and sap working. for example, you buy a tablet in 2010 and three months later it won't charge anymore because the power port is loose. that is not the case here, these ports are beastly. I'm careful, but even if I wasn't I think it could withstand quite a bit of mishandling. don't worry about build quality here, Sony outdid themselves in that department. Remote is okay. there are a ton, and I mean a TON of things this remote can do but the problem is they don't do a great job explaining it. its in the instructions yes, but I think they missed a huge opportunity here. when you calibrate the surround sound, you do it by connecting the receiver to your video source using an hdmi cable. you have to change the channel on your video source to the input you have your receiver connected to, so you can go through the menu and calibrate it. the problem here is this - thats the only thing this menu allows you to do, is calibrate it. they could have added the full, entire receiver menu to this screen and you could scroll through it like a computer, adjusting what you want to adjust without searching for it with the remote on the receivers LCD screen one line at a time. the little LCD screen is pretty small, some of the letters are 1/8" so you have to get up to it to read it. why not keep that there, but ALSO allow you to adjust things on the video source screen on the same menu as calibration? it would have made adjusting its 1000 settings easier. there are tons of sound modes, dolby and dts being the main ones; but its all of the little settings that I wish I could change easier. you can manually adjust the bass, mids, and treble on each speaker as well as increase or decrease its overall volume, or 'distance' from the listener. eq's, hdmi settings etc between all of it, to be able to use a bigger screen to adjust would have made this a 5 star product. overall, this is an outstanding value. I got it on black Friday 2016 for 199.99, which makes it an absolute steal. for 349.99, Id still say its worth it in fact I was coming to the page to buy it at full price(after hearing it at my dads) when I saw it was almost HALF PRICE. you can believe it was a thoughtless decision, one that makes every single day better with tis awesome performance. oh yeah, it does bluetooth input too. my setup is this and the speakers mentioned, Samsung ku6300 40", ps4 pro, sennheiser rs 195 on a rs 175 base with rs 185 ear cups (the best combination), and a MacBook Air latest model. these things do literally every thing I need entertainment wise, at home anyway. don't hesitate, this is an excellent receiver.

Great Experience with this product
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this to replace a Panasonic SA-HE100 which was only replaced because of Sony's problems with the IR blaster on XBR55x900e 4K HDR TV. I was so wanting a really dumb box that still understood HDMI ARC because the update on the TV pushed the Panasonic out. I was convinced to try this receiver because I wanted to be up to date and there was a black friday special on it. The Easy Setup was actually really easy! The microphone worked great to calibrate the surround sound. I am using two Nova 6 Realistic speakers (really testing that lifetime warranty), two RCA rear speakers, a Realistic Center speaker, and a Sony 100w subwoofer. After calibration my music sounded great and centered. Trying out the Force Awakens where Rey learns how to fly the Falcon in two minutes, the tie fighters scream through your head from rear to front, and the sub-woofer was accurately integrated. The receiver responds obediently to on/off/volume/DTS/Dolby switching over the ARC on a 25ft cable. Great buy.

Perfect for me
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this receiver after my Onkyo died after only 5 years. I needed a 7.1 system as I was looking for dual Zone. This is not a true dual zone in that I can't watch tv in one room and play tv in another. It does however give me the ability to watch tv in family room 5.1 and use the additional speaker ports as a b speaker set up. Now I can play music in the family room (A speakers), outside on the deck (B speakers) or both inside and outside. Set up was a sinch since I just unplugged my Onkyo and plugged everything up on the Sony the same way. Operating the receiver is simple which my wife loves. I have a Sonos connect amp hooked up and it is way easier to listen to music on the Sony than on the Onkyo. With my previous unit, we would have to change inputs and hit a series of buttons. Now I simply hit the TV button (that's the input I am using for the Sonos) and I'm off and playing. This is not a WiFi system but I don't really need it to be. It is blue tooth and that function works flawlessly. Very happy with my purchase so far.

Amazing Sound
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I replaced a 20 year old Lifestyle 5 Bose last night, with this Sony receiver. I wondered if it was worth it... but the Bose's remote was giving up. I kept the Bose speaker. The difference was night and day! Unbelievable how much better the sound is; I guess the technology has evolved a lot!

Sounds good But won't handle 4K
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I just recently purchased a Sony 75inch 4K tv and a xbox one x and the receiver can't handle the 4K resolution. I'm getting a bunch of small dots where the receiver is trying to keep up and send out what the xbox is putting out and can't handle it. I plugged the Xbox direct to the Tv and the dots went away and my resolution is awesome. It's a nice receiver but can't handle 4k output.

Perfect 7.2 system
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This replaced a 12 year old Sony AV Receiver. The HDMI inputs make it a breeze to set up and then being able to control the LG TV and Receiver from my Xfinity remote for on/off and volume is great. Was able to reduce wire clutter; no need for optical cable and old RCA jacks from old Sony Receiver. Blue Ray, Cable, and my LG TV all plug into Receiver through HDMI. Easily set up Bluetooth so that my iPhone music plays through all 7 speakers and Sub Woofer. Very easy setup and overall value is better than advertised.
