Customers are saying

Customers often highlight the excellent sound quality, ease of use, and Dolby Atmos capabilities of the 1155W 7.2-Ch. A/V Home Theater Receiver. Many also appreciate the receiver's power and straightforward setup process. While some users noted the unit can get warm during operation and that the menu system could be improved, the positive feedback on sound and ease of use outweighs these concerns for most buyers. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect.

Purchased this unit to replace my 10 year old Yamaha system. Easy to connect unit to my ceiling speakers. So happy to have surround sound back again! The unit recognizes if I am watching TV, a Blu Ray, or Apple TV and automatically changes the I input to the correct channel.

I previously had the strdn850. I loved that old receiver but when it died after 5 years i wanted something where i wouldn’t have to reprogram everything (like remotes). So far this thing works great. The setup is way more effective vs the old model. I love the Apple airplay and the additional watts per channel this puts out. Everything sounds good to me. Plus all my old remotes work like nothing changed. I also bought and hooked up atmos speakers. I have a small living room so it’s not a huge deal for me but i can confirm that atmos works.

This unit has real power such that it fills the living room with clear sounds when at 25% volumn on the level read out while viewing dvds and blu rays. 35% is awesome for music. Sound fields aren't as extensive as other recievers I have owned but the quality of the sound has finally allowed the speakers i'm using to really work well. There is more for me learn about with is recievers amp but so far I am very happy with this purchase. Gives off fair amount of heat. Definitely will be getting and using an aircom before winter is over.

I spent months looking for a receiver that was just right (Denon, Yamaha). I paired the 1080 with Polk Audio towers, center, and in-ceiling surrounds and it's fantastic. Very nice to hear crisp tones & happy to report the BB price was the best around by far.

Bought this after my neighbor got it during Thanksgiving sales, I paired it with my Elac speaker and it just sounds great, I had an older receiver without Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and this receiver is features rich, I’m still taking time to go through with it.

I have had this receiver for about a month now and have had it hooked up to a Sony TV. The combination so far has been really quite impressive. The only issues that I have come across so far is to do the "advanced" settings you have to go online and the other is that I cannot get the Netflix app to play thru the receiver and get the surround sound. I need to get in contact with Sony to walk through some of the issues. Overall I really like it.

I bought this on sale, but even at full price I'd say this is worth every penny! I find the sound on Sony AVRs to very very good and this one is no exception. I replaced an older STR-DN1040 which I loved for a long time but I needed 4K output with HDR for my new OLED. This AVR fits the bill and more. Setup is easy and the multitude of HDMI setups make this a very versatile AVR. Atmos is also quite good on here. I'm setup 5.1.2 and you can really hear the difference (I'm using ceiling mount speakers though so ymmv) Recommended!

We bought this Sony receiver to replace our old Sony receiver that did not have HDMI support and started having center channel and surround issues. The STR-DN1080 is a great receiver for modern equipment, but does not have the inputs necessary to connect and use older equipment. It would be nice to have an HDMI auxiliary input on the front panel so that I wouldn't have to leave a cable dangling off the back of the unit in my equipment stand. Power, sound quality and surround processing is great without the measured calibration equalization. With the calibration eq set the sound was hollow with poor acoustic performance through our Boston Acoustics home theater speakers, turning off the eq settings made a world of difference and we enjoy the sound quality now!!! Switching between HDMI component inputs takes a little longer than expected, but there are no complaints about audio or video quality. We enjoy the bluetooth capabilities but having audio only Chromecast seems pointless. We cast to our Vizio 4K HDR TV when we want to cast. The HDMI ARC functions work great between our Vizio TV and the receiver so I did not have to run the optical output from the TV making installation wiring a little simpler and cleaner. While I think this unit has a little less power than our previous Sony STR-AV935 receiver sound quality is still good and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good AV Receiver for modern HDMI equipment. When it is on sale it is a GREAT value, at list price it is a stretch, but good equipment nonetheless. One point about the binding posts that Sony uses on the unit for speaker wiring. I have paired binding post connectors and the spacing on the receiver is correct side to side BUT NOT top to bottom, so you can install a pair of double post connectors for a pair of outputs with the positive connectors on one and the negative connectors on the other, but you can't connect each speaker to a pair... This seems like a dumb spacing issue to me and Sony has done it this way for decades as my old receiver is the same way. If you are using individual binding posts it won't be an issue at all.

Great user interface and app is easy to use and allows you to change setting and speaker levels from phone or tablet. Wifi and bluetooth work great. Ability to add 2 Subwoofer is awesome. When paired with the Sony SS-CS series speaker offers very clear and power sound. A 3.1 setup with center speaker and 2 bookshelf speakers and 1 sub is more than enough for 20x15 room. I bought the 7.2 speaker set and only used 5.2 setup which is almost too much sometimes. Truly wonderful surround sound just like movie theather. I originally bought a dolby atmos sound bar with sub which was 3.1 setup for $800 and my 7.2 Sony setup with reciever and speakers cost $1100. The sound bar didn't come close in terms of sound quality and power and acoustics. I'm glad I upgraded.

    Best Receiver I've Ever Used!

I have a Samsung KS8000 TV (55" in.), and when we moved into our new house, we decided to go with a surround sound setup. Initially, we went with a Yamaha TSR-7810 receiver from Costco (an $850 receiver for only $490). However, the setup was a pain, the user interface was terrible and slow; and worst of all, every time the receiver was turned on, it would go through 2 minutes of nonstop flickering, regardless of the input. However, when it did work, it was an excellent receiver, with great sound and a TON of features. Regardless, we decided to return the Yamaha receiver back to Costco. After doing a lot of research on receivers, I went with this Sony STR-DN1080 over Onkyo and Denon. This was rated far better than the competing brands, and I've always had excellent customer support from Sony; whereas Onkyo's customer support has been a pain in the past. Once hooked up, the receiver immediately booted up quickly and went straight into the Easy Setup menu. I was honestly blown away how well it was working with my Samsung TV. The Easy Setup is very user-friendly, and explained each feature briefly; whereas in Yamaha, I had to Google the many features just to understand them. Once I finished the Easy Setup, I was genuinely impressed with just about everything with this receiver. The sound quality was superb! The bass from Klipsch subwoofer was punching harder and deeper than it did with the Yamaha. Not to mention, no more flickering issues at all! The receiver boots up quick and immediately opens up the main menu, which is very easy to navigate, and you can easily switch between the HDMI inputs from there (or from the remote). It may not have all of the features like the Yamaha had, nor it may not have an Android app like the Yamaha, but overall, this is honestly just the best receiver I've ever used or have even come across. TLDR: Easy to setup; very user-friendly; excellent sound quality (with better bass); excellent picture quality; and no issues thus far! Sony did right with this one.

Just replaced a defective Onkyo (TNR-696) with the Sony. Not only does it work correctly with HDMI, but the sound is sensational. Very happy I coughed up the additional $100. Setup was a breeze across the board (setup mic, bluetooth, etc.). This is paired with JBL surround & center channel and the Polk audio speakers. Very pleased with the 'neural:x' sound effect.

This receiver exceeded my expectations and I have had several. Sound quality is excellent. Plenty of power for my 5.1 system. The set up is the most user friendly I've ever seen. My Sony TV has no communication issues with the receiver. The cable TV remote control (once programed) works the TV, Receiver and Cable Box even with the Receiver behind a closed cabinet door. Nice to only have one remote. Highly recommend this unit.

Love it. We preciously had a Sony that was SEVERAL years old that was still working great but we wanted to upgrade for the 4K and WiFi features. Awesome! We should have done this months ago. Sounds great, easy to function, looks great, easy setup... no problem and no criticism. Highly recommend and would buy again.

The str dn1080 is no doubt the bigger better brother of the str dn 1070. Don't get me wrong the 1070 is still great in sound quality. Just lacks atmos. The 1080 is more powerful with just the volume only set a half. Nice phantom surround sound setting is a nice addition. My speakers are the definitive technology bp9040 with A90 atmos speakers including the center 9060. This combo set up blows my living room!

I did a ton of research before purchasing this. I looked at everything. This receiver kept coming up as a top pick on most every revue so it was on the top of my list to start with. Then Best Buy put it on sale for $200 off. I went right down and picked one up. It is very easy to setup. On-screen menu walks you right through it and the automatic speaker calibration system worked good to. Anyone who can follow instructions can set this up. The sound is fantastic. It blows my old system away. The detail in the location of the sound and the special effects really immerse you in the movie. If you want bone jarring bass this will give it to you or you can turn it down and still hear all the detail clearly. The streaming media works flawlessly and again so easy to setup. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a receiver in this price range, You can spend a lot more and get more but you won't find another receiver at this price that offers everything this does at the quality.
