Good hard drive, bad software
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I mainly purchased this drive for network storage. I'll admit I didn't do a ton of research beforehand as I was simply looking for a decent HD to plug n play. My router was fully loaded, but has a USB 3 port for network storage. I was planning to use that port for this drive, but after purchasing, realized the USB 3 port on the HD was for additional storage only. Bummer, but this is my bad for not doing my due dilligence. I unplugged the least common denominator and was good to go. For storage, this device works great. You can log in remotely and set up accounts for multiple users if desired. That all works fine, but skip the backup software. It is absolutely horrible and WD should be ashamed. On my laptop, continuous backup would gobble up a good chunk of CPU 24/7. I came back the next day after installing, opened my my laptop...which was extremely hot, to a black screen. Eventually, I was able to get everything running smooth again, but had to delete the software. If you look at the WD support page for this device, you will find many other users with similar situations and a complete lack of response from WD. Oh well. So if you want a network drive that connects via Ethernet, it works great, just avoid the backup software.

Access your information from anywhere
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm just going to say this product probably won't be used by a lot of people. This is one product just like a lot of things at best buy where you have to do your own homework. I was at bestbuy and I got a gift card, two of them for 400 dollars a piece for some samsung s7 phones i bought for me and my girlfriend. And since I already purchased a amd graphics card for my computer, a new 500 watt battery and a new wireless usb adapter, then I had to get a few new things for my 2008 computer to make it more up to date. And that included more hard drive space. I saw this and saw that it had 2 terabytes (although I wish I would have got the 4 for 50 bucks more) I jumped on it. The most important thing was that on the box it said something along the lines of "access your media from anywhere". I went to ask the guys at the geek squad and they said that you would have to have a network set up and that this one didn't have network capabilities. Or something like that, what ever they said I just stopped them and not rudely. Read them the box and they said "well I guess it can" I used to be a retail manager at sears and wal-mart so I know a thing or two about electronics and associates. You don't need to know everything like some customers think you do. So I wasn't offended. I got this product home, set it up. Made a password. And went to my job to see if I can access it from there on my phone and I could. All i had to do was create a password in mycloud. Personally speaking if you have some pictures you don't want on there, I wouldn't hide them there. Its the internet I don't believe anything is safe. With that said the concept is great. I just haven't had time to get full use out of this like I would like to. I really want to back up my movies and watch them while I'm on the go or something. And I'm sure this is the key. Just need a lot of time to configure that process. Also this must stay hooked into your modem/router by ethernet cord. And if you have no clue what that is, I suggest not getting too involved in buying this. But if you would like to access pictures and videos anywhere you go on your ipad without it holding up space on your ipad and phone, this would do the trick. Also make sure you have this in a spot where someone like my roommate doesn't unplug it. Cause obviously it needs to be on and plugged into your router/modem.

Otterbox commuter case perfect size
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had life proof before but the seals actually broke. I decided I wanted to go with otterbox but didn't want the bulky defender series. I love my new case. Just wish there were more colors.

Firmware had problems for years, now decent
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Big caveat; if you're using this forTime Machine backups, WiFi will shortly let you down and you'll see the dreaded error"Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you." I've not run into problems with wired backups and current firmware. I'd recommend this with some caveats.

Works well....setup is kinda a pain
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My 10 year old MyBookWorld drive crashed, thankfully I had backups. So I bought this to replace it. Like others have said the setup and learning is not too friendly. Included docs almost none....best thing I found to do was watch YouTube videos....that answered all of my questions. Also in initial setup....REMEMBER the info that you type in....they don't make it clear....but you MUST have it to lof into the drive later on.

Convenient Personal Cloud
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Only had it up and running a few days but so far I'm happy. Was looking for something to do a small home network backup and got personal cloud along with it. Not the fastest transfer rate even on a GB network but we don't have a lot of new activity on a daily basis either. Nice small desktop footprint. Pretty easy install. Using the WD backup software and its got a simple interface. Overall happy with the drive. WD doesn't usually disappoint me.

A bit more than I needed
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was looking for a backup drive for my photos and videos and this was recommended by an IT friend. I like it, but it's a bit more complicated and involved than I really needed.

The best hard drive ever
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wish i bought 2 of these. This is the best hard drive i ever owned. And impossible to find now. None of the ones i found have network capabilities. The only downside is the software. It's always changing plus the interface is hit or miss. But for the ability to access hard drive space from a network point of view is priceless. I have an 8 gig western digital and wasnt pleased with it. If you can get this bad boy on line and working its flawless.

Easy setup - good iOS app, slow file xfer
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I would honestly say my review is more 3.5 stars if that was an option. Item was very easy to setup on my network. Software is a bit clunky but intuitive. They also release regular updates for it. iOS app is great. Streaming of docs/pics and videos is flawless and fast on wifi or cellular. I just wish I could find a way to increase file xfer speeds. I'm putting many large files on the hard drive (mostly my DVD collection that I have ripped to appletv compatible m4v). I want to be able to supplement my netflix streaming library with my own collection. The app works great for that, airplay and appletv work perfect with it, just wish it transferred the data faster.

They made it simple
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This drive was extremely easy to setup (and secure) on my network. WD made it easy to get connected and use on the home network. They have good apps to access it away from home...I didn't think I wanted the hassle of the extra securing necessary to make it work that way, but it was so simple I had to try it. It is slower saving items to the drive than a USB attached drive but not horrible. Read access is faster.

Great home network drive for TimeMachine
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I decided to get this so I could have a network drive to backup my Mac with TimeMachine without having to plug in a drive all of the time. It didn’t take too long to set up, and I eventually got TimeMachine to work properly. So far, it continues to work well.
