    Very good Choice

One on the best purchases I have made in a very…very long time. There is nothing I can really say bad about this device. when I first installed device it took me some time to understand. I would not see it as an external drive?.... but After I downloaded the software and installed it, I was able to see the drive using the software. It took me dragging and dropping my information to realize how user friendly this was. I let it run all night as the files were being saved. I am sure it did not take that long but I wanted to leave it up just in case. Now I am at work and I pull my phone out my pocket click my cloud app, enter my password and wow ….all my information is at my finger tips. I forgot to mention I am a tech so I did allot of research and comparisons online and YouTube. I noticed this device and am happy I chose it. Now if my computer ever crashes (again) all my information is still accessible. I also like how it’s not configured like a USB drive but over the network. I keep it separate and even plug it into a different power strip than my computer setup. The only advice I would give is to take at least an hour to learn how the drive works and configure it to your liking. My wife doesn’t understand what it is but the next time our computer crashes and we still have all our information she will get it . only reason this did not get 5 stars was its still only a week old.

    Okay product easy to use

For the most part is good product. It is easy use and set up. Good to access files on smart phones and pc. Though I have gigabyte switch hard wired it is slow to get the files at times. The only real negative that brings to three stars for me. I the time machine back is unreliable. It keeps failing. Worked with tech support and they helped but still every so often it fails. For the most part I would recommend file sharing the cloud capabilities but would not recommend for Apple uses who want a good time machine back up witch they would need anther solution for that.

    Great Storage Solution

Was not sold on the security offered by cloud providers so bought this to share and backup files. Sharing files between 2 personal laptops and 1 business laptop as well as family and friends remote to me. Got this setup and validated in 30 minutes, then took off on a business trip to Manila. No problem connecting through the hotel Wi-FI at all. Read time was fast, write time was fine for smaller files but somewhat slow going over the net for larger files. That is an internet restriction, would happen with any cloud service. Called up WD's help desk a couple of time for questions and they were very responsive, even started a remote session in my PC to help. Very glad I made this decision. Would recommend connecting with an ethernet cable rather than wi-fi when you do back-ups and heavy file copies as it is much faster than wi-fi.

Great cloud option for a great price

I bought this to keep sensitive documents out of the normal cloud options. The cost was less than what I paid for a 1TB Seagate NAS not that long ago. Yes, they offer remote access but it is cumbersome at best. I was hesitant after reading some of these reviews but after a short time, I dove in. I have absolutely no regrets. It took some time to get the remote access set up properly but once done, this works very well. It even includes the means to upload photos from your device when connected to WiFi like one of the more popular cloud services out there. You need to be comfortable with assigning static IP's and setting port forwarding on your router. They could provide a little more setup information in the box but the information is out there and will vary based on your router manufacturer/model.

    Photo album disappeared

Started off great. Installation was easy. Downloading app was easy. Transferred all my iTunes music over (took a couple hours). Slowly started transferring photo albums over. This morning transferred around 8000 pictures from my iPhoto library (computer memory is full). Took a couple hours then deleted photos from computer. Uploaded 300 photos from phone to My Cloud using phone application. Overall around 11k photos have been transferred. I go on to check the latest bunch of downloads and it was paused/super slow. Cancelled it just incase it was a video and was taking too long. Tried to transfer again and photo album on My Cloud showed the "thinking" spinning circle. I refreshed the app on the computer after a few minutes of waiting. Now? Photo album (with ALL photos) gone. Just gone. No shared photo album to speak of on computer or phone app. I'm holding back tears of losing so many photos for no reason. It was there one second and gone the next. I didn't delete the folder (if I did it would have taken a LOT longer to delete all those pictures). They didn't get moved over to another "music" folder because again it would show or take a long time to transfer. It is just gone. This isn't my first external. I've always used portable ones but wanted to try "The Cloud." This whole cloud thing was my first time trying it and I'm going back to externals that I can plug INTO a computer rather than rely on uploading pictures.

Could have been just what I'm looking for

I'll echo what everyone else has said and say that this was way, way too difficult to set up on my network. I have three computers (a work laptop, a personal laptop, and a desktop) and need a way to access my files wherever I am. I work at a school and the network there is iffy- sometimes I can't access google drive and/ or dropbox, so I thought a NAS was worth a try. It works for that purpose, but be advised that its far from plug and play. Its unclear what software you need from the mycloud site to set the thing up, and half the time my computers wont recognize my mycloud when I'm on the same network. File transfers are slow. It took me a full day to do a 79gb initial back up of my work macbook. But then that may well be my network. That said, the web interface is pretty slick. I just dont think this has many advantages over web based storage, especially when google drive and dropbox are free.

    Great cloud drive

This drive is absolutely the best. I have wanted a cloud drive for well over a year and was afraid to invest the money on something I was not sure would work. I am a 30 + year IT veteran and this drive surely impressed me with its ease of setup and storage capacity. Believe me it is well worth every penny spent. You won't be disappointed.

Great concept but poor execution in some ways

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

As the summary says its a great concept but my two weeks experience so far is that the device either hangs up or does not allow full function at times. As one example I have to reboot my PC to get rid of what appears to be terminated past sessions which block resign ons. Performance has been vastly improved from past efforts but the lack of overall stability leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I look forward to software improvements that will remedy my experience. On the other hand the smartware backup software acts flawlessly but my primary objective was convenient sharing of data among remote collaborators and that is not yet bullet proof.

Transfer speed may vary on what type of router is used for local network. But I bet speed can't compare with USB connected speed. Other than that, it does what it supposed to.

Drive itself seems to be okay, but the software hangs up and isn't very user friendly. Their Smartware program you download to automate a lot of the backup functions froze up several times and the backup functions don't work, period. I ended up using Acronis as my backup software. Don't know if I want to keep the drive without being able to access all it's functions

Setup was not difficult. I have the drive connected to a wireless router. Have used for backups from Macbook Pro (Time Machine) and Windows (under bootcamp). Did the initial backups via ethernet to wireless router using Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor. Subsequent ongoing backups with Time Machine have been wireless. No problems. Like the web interface. The drive can be accessed from anywhere via the internet.

Not a good home theater replacement

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this because I wanted a drive that could store my movies for home viewing or for when I want to access a movie while I'm traveling. Unfortunately, I'm not satisfied this device can completely fulfill my need. I loaded over my movies but it doesn't allow you to load in the cover art for the DVD. So, you have to just store the movie as if it's regular file that you have to find in list view. Secondly, you can't circumvent this by installing a program like PLEX that serves as an excellent home theater management system because the device doesn't allow it. I guess the good is it's big, easy to install and has a ton of room. Just a poor choice if you're looking to make a cloud movie access system.

This worked well initially and I transferred all my files onto it. However it started to slow down and needed to be restarted to get back to speed. I reset the device as the Mac time machine didn't appear to work. Now it is taking 20 hours to back up. The machine isn't reachable some times so can't be shut down without unplugging it . Bizarrely it can be reached by one laptop running windows but un obtainable by another on the same wifi network. Seems that I'm not the only one getting these problems according to other comments. Unfortunate as the concept is excellent and up until now I have always used WD drives. I would like to recommend it but it is currently disappointing.
