Not good for use as a external hard drive

I would not recommend this to even my worst enemy. Run away with your money still in your pocket than buy this product. The My Cloud is slow and not user friendly. I bought this item so I could copy my small storage of 200 GB of pictures, MP3s and documents from a PC hard drive to a Mac hard drive. My plan was to backup my files so I could reformat my 1tb Toshiba drive for use on the Mac. Two days later of copying the job is only half way done. Despite the slowness I thought having my files available whenever or where ever I needed them. This would be great, however, but it takes several seconds to a minute for files opened via the app for the Android and the MacBook Pro. Great idea by WD but poor execution. This is a terrible product that if I had to do it all over again would run as fast as I could away from it. Do not buy unless you enjoy being frustrated and tormented.

Great features, DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY

I believe the concept of having your own cloud storage is great. However, WD My Cloud DOES NOT PROVIDE consistent functionality. It is very frustrating that this product fails every time I need it most. I was very exited to get it, but unfortunately it has been the worst technology investment I have made. I will be returning it ASAP.

Creates An Unneeded Abundant of Folders

When transferring a large amount of picture files to the drive, it creates a "filename.jpg.files" folder for each and every photo you're transferring. This creates clutter. When transferring a small # of picture files, it doesn't do this. It's very strange. Also, when using with a mac, it loses connection to the drive often. You have to keep trying to log-into it repeatedly until it finally works.

    Wouldn't work

Purchased this since the wife and I have a lot of digital photos and music. We were looking for a way to backup our data and be able to share common items. This was recommended to us by a 'blue shirt'. Well, I was worried when I saw the installation directions only had 3 steps. That was confirmed when I got an error message during the initial setup. Kept on going and kept running into errors. Even did the firmware update. Couldn't get WD Sync to 'talk' to the drive. The decision to take this back is when I called Tech Support and after 30 minutes of talking to the tech, got placed on hold for 10 minutes, the hung up on. Not happy....

    Stay away from this NAS

This NAS worked great for a few days. WD came out with an new firmware update that rendered parts of this NAS worthless. Can't access it through the browser anymore to change settings.

    Not what I expected

I have this just over a month and still have trouble getting this to work with my iMac & Macbook Pro. It seems to work fine with my Kindle fire and iPhone 5s. I was able to do the basic setup, but now i get a warning triangle and firmware update available. When I try to update I get The six sided box with an exclamation point telling me "Error retrieving firmware upgrade information: Internal Server error. Retry your last operation. If the error persists contact WD Support for assistance. I contacted WD & was told to change from safari to Google Chrome. I WILL NOT do that again. Nothing about Chrome feels natural to me and it didn't help with the update.

I spent several days off and on trying to get logged in. When I got to the website it would check to find it on my computer however a continued error message saying that it was not on my network. The plug in is very simple, the blue light was solid but the same error message. Tried a number of different ways to no avail. I have a PC which the box indicates it is compatible with Windows. Too frustrated, I returned the product.

Cloud only works half the time

This is a great product....when it works. Unfortunately, the cloud works about half the time. I have it set up properly, and there is not an issue with my internet connection, so I know it's an issue on WD's end. If you're buying it to back up your laptop, then it works. If you're buying it to access your personal cloud, buy something else.

    Disappointed

Product worked will for a few months and then for some unknown reason it dropped its LAN connection and needed to be rebooted to reconnect. Unfortunately, the connection only lasted for a few minutes. Online search indicated this problem is shared by many people and even the latest firmware upgrade has not solved the problem for all users.

    Poor Connectivity

The My Cloud started off working very well, but over time the connection to my laptop has become more and more unstable. I've tried replacing the ethernet cable, I've tried connecting it to directly to my laptop, but nothing is improving. I end up rebooting 5 or more times a day in order to re-connect.

    AVOID IF YOU CAN!

Owned this device, and have stored files from two MacBooks onto it. A week ago, somehow the device decided to wipe itself out. WD has no answer for this. And trust I am tech savvy, this was not a user issue. AVOID IF YOU CAN!
