This is dedicated to the most personal vein of Brahms, to that musical intimacy that dwells in him from the works of youth to the works of extreme old age. A melancholy tenderness deeply rooted in his soul on which (and, at times, against which) the Hamburg composer built all his rigorous creative teaching. On the one hand, one of the many manifestations of romanticism, on the other the classical Beethoven heritage and the great tradition of counterpoint (Bach, but also masters more distant in time). The realization of the great forms (symphonies, concerts, sonatas, variations, the major chamber works, the Requiem) often takes place in Brahms through long and troubled gestations, studded with trials, errors, second thoughts his masterpieces of larger dimensions reveal, among their folds, an incessant effort to perfect. Despite the chronological distance of the proposed works, a red thread connects them the taste for a lean writing style that evokes solemn and tragic atmospheres; the deep lyrical sweetness, the sense of a pressing and inexorable destiny, a certain irony and almost unsettling playfulness, but, above all, a calm and resigned melancholy that reveals his deepest voice to us.

The Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865-1950) is best remembered for his development of Eurhythmics, which teaches the appreciation of music through movement. But Jaques-Dalcroze, who studied with Delibes and Fauré in Paris and with Bruckner and Fuchs in Vienna, was a considerable composer in his own right, with operas, cantatas and orchestral works among his substantial output. These piano works, all written in the 1890s, are generally lighter in style, showing the influence of Schumann and the salons of Paris. Winner of several national and international prizes, the Milanese pianist Adalberto Maria Riva received a special mention at the International Competition of Music IBLA Grand Prize in 2008. This distinction allowed him to undertake a tour in the USA in April 2009 with a concert in Carnegie Hall. His repertoire ranges from Bach to contemporary composers, a sequence that he presents in a cycle of concert-conferences based on history and pianistic literature in a number of cultural and musical institutions across Europe. Until the middle of the 1700s the bassoon suffered from a series of technical limitations that retarded it's appreciation until new improvements allowed the classical bassoon (to distinguish it, as we do today, from the baroque instrument) to emerge as a fundamental instrument of ever more complex orchestras. The Ensemble Devienne and bassoonist Massimo Martusciello's new Bongiovanni features a program of bassoon chamber works by four composers, one from the Classical era (Devienne), an early-Romanti (Danzi) and two 20th c. modernists, Jean Françaix and Roberto Molinelli.
