About this product
Glenn Gould maintained a very peculiar relationship, a sort of love and hate, with Beethoven's music, which he performed out of any traditional scheme or system. This CD presents two further Beethoven rarities in live recordings by the Canadian pianist, the first being the Piano Concerto No.1 in C, op. 15, recorded in Turin, Italy on 23 January 1951 when Gould was only nineteen. The Piano Concerto No.3 in c, op. 37, with the Canadian Radio Orchestra under conductor Heinz Unger, was recorded four years later, on 21 February 1955. This very significant addition to the discography of Glenn Gould furthers the image of this eclectic, fascinating and singular artist. Album Tracks 1. Concerto No. 1 in C Major for Piano & Orchestra Op. 15 2. Concerto No. 3 in C minor for Piano & Orchestra Op. 37

Jan Dismas Zelenka is a significant but frequently neglected eighteenth century composer who received his musical training in Prague and was active from around 1710 at the court of August Elector of Saxony in Dresden where he was primarily responsible for church music at court, but also composed secular instrumental works. He was universally admired in his time and is today steadily regaining his well deserved reputation. His music displays a wide emotional spectrum ranging from contemplation to triumphant ecstasy to an equal degree in his vocal works and textless instrumental music. The accomplished young British countertenor Alex Potter succeeds in displaying this wide emotional range in selected works for alto solo he dazzles with astounding virtuosity in the motet InchBarbara, dira efferaInch and soars in tender arcs of tension in his performance of the InchChriste eleisonInch from a late unfinished mass by Zelenka. He is accompanied with consummate sensitivity by the Capriccio Barockorchester from Basel. Album Tracks 1. Barbara, Dira Effera! ZWV 164 2. Alma Redemptoris Mater ZWV 126 3. Hipocondrie ZWV 63 4.
