The Paul BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND set the standards in the 1960s for kick-ass electric blues. Arguably no other group could hold a candle to them. Starting in 1964 and into the first half of the 1970s Paul's band recorded numerous albums for Elektra Records. In 1972 Elektra issued InchGolden ButterInch, a double LP of the groups best material. This album is now being issued as a 2 CD set for the first time anywhere in the world. Many regard this as the best compilation ever issued on their material. The BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND, particularly in it's early incarnations, was, without doubt, one of the most dynamic and exciting combos to emerge in the mid 1960s. Initially playing a brash, swaggering take on Chicago Blues on their self-titled debut album for Elektra Records (released in October 1965), they soon sought to push out and beyond the rigid Bluesy musical structures to something more innovative and intriguing. Fronted by harmonica player Paul Butterfield, the band came to exert a considerable influence on musicians nationally and internationally. The first seven tracks on this fantastic value at mid-price come from a recording at the Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, on 14th October 1966 including the classic InchEast WestInch. Alongside Butterfield, the line-up for the show was Mike Bloomfield (Guitar, Vocals); Elvin Bishop (Guitar, Vocals); Mark Naftalin (Organ, Vocals); Jerome Arnold (Bass); and Billy Davenport (Drums).The two additional tracks come from a 1970 show in New York City and include a great version of Albert King's InchBorn Under a Bad SignInch. Butterfield's playing and vocal skills have matured and his band, now supplemented by a horn section featuring a young David Sanborn, have incorporated a distinctly Jazzy influence, and all the better for it. This double CD, recorded in December 1970 was recorded and radio broadcast from A&R Studios in New York City in front of a live audience. The lineup is mostly the same as the one that recorded the Elektra tag live album the previous March at the Troubadour in Los Angeles with Paul Butterfield on vocals and harmonica, David Sanborn on alto sax, Gene Dinwiddie on soprano sax, Trevor Lawrence on baritone sax, Steve Madaio on trumpet, Ralph Wash on guitar, Rod Hicks on bass guitar, and Dennis Whitted on drums. While there is little doubt that the Butterfield Blues Band took a hit when Mike Bloomfield left, the group compensated by shifting musical direction, adding a horn section.
