This Cobra radar detector is a full featured bargain. I have been out of the radar detector game for a while but I never would have stopped using one if the one I had could do everything the RAD 490i does. DESIGN: It looks like most radar detectors, a sleek black plastic box with a cable coming out of it. This one is a bit different than what I am used to though because it is USB-C which is fantastic because it is the most universal way to connect power to any device. Pretty much everyone has a laptop, phone, tablet, razor, monitor, mouse, keyboard or a hundred other devices that charge, are powered by, or otherwise connected via USB-C. This means everyone has a spare cable or twenty. No more proprietary cables and you are also not limited to a 12v port in your car to power it. Most new cars have USB-C connections and most that don’t have the older USB-A. It also uses an OLED display which is really easy to see even on the sunny days I’ve used it for the past week and a half. I’m not sure if I love the mount for it. On one hand it is great because you can easily remove the RAD 490i from the mount but the mount has 3M permanent adhesive. That means it will stay where you put it but also means you need to make sure it is perfectly level when you install it. If you’re a bit OCD like me it will really bother you if it is not level. I wish there was an option for the old suction cups or a 3M removable adhesive. USE: As I mentioned, I’ve used this for about a week and a half and I really like it so far. I thought using the menus to adjust settings was going to be difficult but it was actually quite easy. The volume is quick to adjust since they kept the dial! I love the dial because that is probably the adjustment I make the most while driving and it is simple to operate. It’s the only dial and you know exactly what you are doing without looking at it. There are three different levels for detection as well. This is nice because if you are in a city setting it may go off all the time so you can adjust it to be less sensitive to non-police radar it may pick up The app adds a whole new element to radar detectors. Using the app in Android Auto or CarPlay is awesome. It’s kind of like Waze for Radar! The app is also very easy to use. Overall I could not ask for a better radar detector. I’m also not sure what I would do with more features. I absolutely recommend this for anyone new to radar detectors or for those that just want something simple that works well.

Back in 2012, I purchased my first Cobra radar detector. Back then, cars didn't have the sophisticated blind-spot detection, lane-assist, and adaptive cruise control systems they do now. Today, the RF environment is incredibly jammed—modern cars constantly trigger false alerts. To correctly use the Cobra RAD 490i, you need to educate yourself on radar bands and how police speed devices actually work. You have to learn how much reaction time you actually have once a signal is detected. Be warned: if you catch a laser signal and you are speeding, you are pretty much done. Laser is highly directional; by the time it triggers the Cobra, you have already been targeted. The Good: It is lightweight, looks stylish, and the new windshield adhesive mount with the static sticker completely avoids accidental detachments. Moving to USB-C is a huge upgrade. Most modern cars have USB outlets now, and using my USB meter, I verified the current draw is low (under 500mA). It’s robust and universal. The Drive Smarter app works well for me, especially since I use it for both my Cobra dash cam and this RAD 490i. Speed traps pull up directly on the screen, and the in-dash smartphone integration is solid, though I did find the Bluetooth connection a bit spottier on one of my mobile devices compared to the other. The Bad: I really expected Cobra to include an onboard GPS chip at this stage. Having internal GPS would allow the device to handle its own low-speed muting and perform GPS lockouts to ignore fixed false alerts (like grocery store automatic doors). Instead, you are entirely reliant on your smartphone app to do this heavy lifting. In conclusion: As an introduction to the radar detector world, the RAD 490i is a good start. The features added by your phone essentially boost your Cobra's capabilities. Cobra is a reliable brand—my 2012 model is outdated, but it is still kicking. This is a good device to let you know what is going on around you, but it is not a foolproof ticket preventative device if you want true protection without the hassle of constantly linking your phone.

This is my first radar detector as I use to live in the only state in the country they’re illegal,VA! So recently relocating to Texas I was finally able to get one and hopefully not get anymore tickets! Unboxing, in addition to the detector you get a USB-C cable and a 12v USB-C cigarette adapter, windshield mount and transparent mounting film. Cobra also offers an optional mount for rear view mirror mounting and a hardwire kit. The Cobra drive smarter app allows you to control and change the features of the detector which makes operating it much easier. There’s also a CarPlay version so if you have CarPlay or Android auto, you can use it instead of their navigation apps. It’s one thing to have an app, it’s another thing for it to be good and the drive smarter app is good feature wise and how well it works with the detector. Being that it’s my first detector I can’t compare it to other radar detectors, but the features and the ease of use more than satisfy me. If you’re in the market for a radar detector that gives you protection front and back, has CarPlay and Android auto functionality and is easy to operate, the 490i is a great choice.

It’s sort of hard to review a radar detector because you never really know for sure how well it works until you’re in a situation where you needed it to and then it either did or it didn’t. During my audition of the RAD 490i, I was never laser-checked, but there were a few X-band and K-band speed traps that I WAS alerted to and could later verify; so, in that sense, the early warning the 490i promises definitely delivered. If that’s all you need or really want–or can really afford–then this unit is probably going to do you VERY well. And given that the asking price puts the 490i very near the low-end of the pricing tiers available for Cobra and its competitors, I’d say you get a pretty good value for your dollar–just don’t expect it to WOW you with looks or extra features. The unit itself is small enough so that it doesn’t take up a huge amount of windshield space once it’s mounted. Strangely, Cobra chose to ONLY include a permanent, 3M adhesive window-mount in the box, which means you’d better measure several times before placing it, lest you finally get it on the window and realize you’ve got it tilted just a tad to the left or right. For some people, that probably wouldn’t even be an issue; but for someone with OCD-level obsession over having everything in JUST the right place, I would imagine this would be a little irksome (it would have been for me). I bought a cheap suction mount online so that I wouldn’t have to deal with finding the ideal mounting point and then committing myself to that location forever (or until I destroyed the existing adhesive and bought some new 3M adhesive), and so that it was a lot easier to move the detector from one vehicle to another. The unit has a USB-C port and comes with a low-profile 12V USB-C plug-in adapter and a fairly long USB-C to USB-C cable for connection. The cable itself will likely be enough for you to place the detector anywhere on the windshield you want, but having a coiled cable would have been appreciated to help keep all that extra cable from dangling down into my center console or flopping into the passenger seat. You can use the 12V adapter or plug the detector directly into the head unit of your vehicle if you have a USB-C data or charging port. The type of USB-C connection (charge or data) doesn’t really matter because it’s only used for powering the detector anyway. The marketing materials indicate that the 490i is CarPlay/Android Auto enabled–and that is true in a manner of speaking. It’s not that the 490i works DIRECTLY with your vehicle’s CarPlay (or Android Auto, I would assume). Instead, it integrates with the Drive Smarter app which DOES speak directly to the vehicle. Once you have Drive Smarter installed on your phone, it syncs via BT to the 490i and reads, speaks, and displays speed and detection information onto your in-dash video screen. It’s definitely a nice feature to have as more and more vehicles are coming equipped with at least one USB port. The only drawback, of course, is that you have to run with Drive Smarter open for the integration to work; this may be an irritant if you routinely use Apple or Google maps to plan your routes or provide in-vehicle navigation. There are a number of options and operational settings you can adjust directly on the unit itself, but the Drive Smarter app not only gives you detection integration, it lets you adjust a multitude of settings on the detector via simple toggles on the phone’s screen which I much preferred to using the awkward 4-button navigation system on the top of the unit itself. When not integrated into your vehicle’s in-dash display, all information is also available on the TINY screen and via audio feedback from the detector itself. The display is nothing to write home about, but Cobra did a good job of keeping it simple, easy to see, and attention-grabbing when you need it to be. In normal operation, the screen is black with high-contrast, easy-to-read white lettering and icons. Even at its brightest, it is much easier on the eyes than the harsh LED displays these devices used to have. Vocal prompts like operating status are spoken rather than communicated via beeps or tones. BUT, when a detection is made, the screen goes from all black to all white, and the detection band, exact frequency, and signal strength is displayed in bigger, high-contrast white block characters and a 5-segment signal strength meter. A spoken voice prompt will also alert you to the band the signal was detected on. I don’t know if the improvement in reaction time would be measurable if the display didn’t change illumination schemes, but it’s a nice departure from the same-old readouts no matter what is happening with the detector. The biggest gripe I have with this particular model is that there are no directional indicators for the detections, so you can never be certain if the signal is oncoming, behind you, or off behind the trees on another road. Given that the 490i is more of a “starter unit” based on the price point, this little omission is probably forgivable, but it’s hard to get used to having a little less situational awareness when you’ve gotten used to another detector that does provide such information. We also have a pricey dashcam-radar detector combo unit. Driving with them both running, they both went off at roughly the same time and squawked at the same false positives due to storefront doors and vehicle avoidance signals; but overall, their performance seemed fairly comparable. If you are on a bit of a tight budget, the Cobra RAD 490i is definitely a solid choice for detecting radar and laser speed measurement signals early enough to avoid the cop at the other end–and as long as you aren’t looking for it to do much else, you’ll probably be pretty happy with it. Recommended.

Thank you so much for the detailed review! We’re glad to hear you’re enjoying the RAD 490i overall.
On the Drive Smarter app side, if you ever experience lag or connectivity issues, clearing the cache and performing a fresh reinstall can often help improve stability and performance. Also worth noting, running multiple radar detectors at the same time is not recommended, as they can interfere with each other and impact overall performance. While an adhesive mount is included, it also comes with three temporary installation films for a semi-permanent setup. If you prefer, we also offer an optional suction cup mount on our website. Thanks again for sharing your insights and for recommending the RAD 490i. Safe travels!

I have used several radar detectors over several decades, dating back to the 70s. Cobra has always been a strong competitor in this field and this latest offering, the RAD 490i Radar and Laser Detector, is a good example why. However, this radar detector is not perfect. I’ll start with the shortcomings. The biggest shortcoming is the lack of any GPS to remember where the false alarms are located. I read that Cobra decided to not include it on this model in order to keep the cost down. I find having to deal with the same false alarms a bit annoying. My next complaint is that you have to use the Extreme Sensitivity to really get good advance warning of radar in patrol cars. Several times I physically noticed the police vehicle prior to the alarm going off. In my first week of use, only once was I truly alerted to radar I did not see or expect. It can be said that the one time alone pays for the unit - I won’t argue with that. The last negative is that the mounting tape they provided does not hold the weight of the unit. Where and how to mount a radar detector , especially one you prefer to take down and hide when not driving, remains a decades-old challenge. On the positive side, it does what it is supposed to do - alert a driver to the presence of radar or laser, whether it be from a speed gun or possibly an alarm system or other source. For the price point and - very important - my device included the subscription to the Drive Smarter app - avoiding one speeding ticket will probably pay for the device given the cost of fines nowadays. One last note, I would not consider an option which required me to pay to subscribe to the Drive Smarter app. Overall, it is a good radar detector, but as with most devices of this type, you will most likely have to put up with false alarms and an occasional failure to detect in time to avoid a fine, which prevents me from giving it 5 stars.

Setup was very quick. Plug into USB C or 12v car adapter, download the Drive Smarter app and add the detector to it. That’s it. Worked well with the default settings. It did go off quite a bit in town - likely some false positives from business alarms etc. I’ll probably play with using less sensitive settings when using in town, but mostly plan to use on highway driving. Highway driving works well. Only had one long road trip so far with it, but Feel like I always got alerted before I saw the cop. Once I saw 2 cops side by side on highway median but didn’t go off. Assuming they didn’t have their radar on. The drive smart app is easy to use and easily accessible in CarPlay. While you can do directions in the app I still prefer other mapping apps as this app doesn’t allow more than one destination/stop to be entered. The crowd source feature is nice to have but I don’t like taking my hands off the wheel to log incidents or police etc. Has loads of different detection types of laser, radar, bands, etc. The mute button is handy for silencing the alert until you’re past it. Note that speed signs that show your speed set it off, but makes sense as they re using radar. I like the non distracting minimalist cylon light that cycles back and forth and isn’t bright while it’s in its normal waiting to detect mode. The only con I’ll note is that it only comes with a sticking tape mount. It has a square electrostatic sheet that you can apply to windshield so that removal is easy, but we regularly drive through Virginia where these aren’t allowed and prefer a suction windshield mount to take down and put back up easily as needed. Fortunately they are inexpensive to add and many in the market that are compatible with the cobra line quick connector. Time will tell on detecting radar traps from a distance, but so far easy to use and setup.

Thank you so much for the detailed feedback! We're happy to hear you're enjoying the RAD 490i along with the Drive Smarter app integration. You are correct that an officer must be running radar in order for the detector to provide you with an alert. In this case, it sounds like no radar was in use. As an additional note, an adhesive mount is included but we also sell an optional suction mount, if preferred. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 800-543-1608. The Cobra RAD 490i exceeded my expectations, outperforming the Escort MAX 3 I reviewed five years ago. Both are made by Cedar, but the newer RAD 490i does a better job discriminating between noise and authentic police radar signals. Both with latest firmware. More on that later. The unit feels well made and was easy to set up. I like that it has a combination thumbwheel volume and power switch in one on the side. Old fashioned but easy to use. The monochrome OLED display is bright enough to see in the daytime and dims down to a level that’s easy on your eyes at night. It’s easy to read, shows signal strength, microwave radar bands detected, and other information. It usually only shows a white block scanning bar on a black background until it picks up something. Then it shows what it’s picked up, sounds an alarm, and a voice tells you what it is. There are options to mute those features or disable the display. Power is provided via a USB-C port. I really like that. They include a small 12-volt adapter and USB-C cable to connect the detector to power. If your vehicle has a USB port, you can use that as well. Mounting it to the windshield is done via double-sided 3M tape. That’s fine if you plan on using it exclusively in one vehicle but not if you need to use it in multiple vehicles, like rentals. You can get an optional suction cup mount for that. I mounted mine beside the rearview mirror, high enough for good range but low enough for the laser detector to work. It works great with the app, but you have to register it to use the app. The app adds GPS from your phone, also, maps, red-light and speed-camera alerts, accident and police location alerts, and lets you tag radar door openers and security systems so it will ignore them. You must use the app to get these features. The Escort MAX 3 has built-in GPS, so it doesn’t need the app for most of that, but both use the same app for real-time alerts. Our vehicles do not have Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, not able to test that. Two-vehicle test: My wife and I drove through a couple of local towns and rural areas where she followed closely behind me. We stayed in touch on our phones with Bluetooth headsets. The MAX 3 was mounted high on the windshield in her CR-V with the stick suction cup mount. We drove past areas with radar door openers, malls, grocery stores, and security systems. I had the RAD 490i set to high sensitivity, and it rarely went off for door openers unless we were right up on them. The MAX 3 was set to Auto and never missed a single door opener. That tells me the RAD 490i filters out door openers and security systems better than the MAX 3. We passed several police cars and roadside speed signs. Both detectors went off at the same time and at the same levels for all legitimate radar signals. No Pops and no laser detected on that trip. Single-vehicle test: I removed the MAX 3 from the CR-V and was going to mount it on my Ridgeline’s windshield as far away from the RAD 490i as I could. The suction mount broke, rubber came apart, when I removed it, so I placed the MAX 3 on the passenger seat and lowered the headrest to hold it, then raised the seat tilted up for maximum height. The head rest covered the rear laser detector and ruled its use out. I drove the same route and got similar results, but there were exceptions caused by the detectors being only about three feet apart. Every so often the MAX 3 would get full-scale Pop alerts while the RAD didn’t go off at all. The MAX would also get phantom alerts at random. That didn’t surprise me because running radar detectors together causes crosstalk interference. The circuitry inside them generates RF signals that they can pick up at extremely close range. The RAD seems able to distinguish that from legitimate radar. No surprise, it’s over five years newer. Comparison summary: RAD 490i: USB-C power, adhesive mount, app adds GPS, filters noise better, newer design. MAX 3: Built-in GPS, suction mount, same app, more false alerts, older design. Conclusion: For the price and performance, you can’t go wrong with the RAD 490i. It performed better than the older Escort MAX 3 at filtering out noise-type signals and matched it on legitimate radar detection. The MAX 3 wins with its built-in GPS, but it costs over twice as much. Both work with the same app. The only drawback for some may be the adhesive mount instead of suction cup. Recommended.

The last time I used a radar detector was the mid-1990's. It wasn't a great experience. Did it work? Mostly. Did it register every electric door, cell phone tower, and other RF emitter in the area as well? All the time. I gave up after it became too hard to differentiate the real alerts from the false ones. I haven't touched one in 30 years because of that experience. Recently though I find myself taking regular 150 mile (each way) highway drives between the two houses I own in CO and WY. These are on long stretches of interstate highways where speeds can climb and police lurk behind every hill. After a few scares, I decided trying out the latest technology may be worth a shot. The Cobra RAD 490i radar and laser detector is on the lower end of the wide price scale for detectors. Some upper end units push the $800 range and have more features than I'd ever use. I just needed something simple and effective. The 490i hit the right spot, simple in operation but with some advanced features. Setup of the unit was simple. Plug it in, make some setting adjustments if you want, mount it on your windshield, and go. I didn't try to get fancy and hardware it to my car as I want to move it between vehicles when necessary. It plugs into the USB-C outlet on my dash. It comes with a USB-C cable, USB-C to USB-A converter, and a USB-C to 12V cigarette lighter adapter. I appreciated the USB-C interface as my car doesn't have the 12V outlet most detectors require. It comes with a mount that has 3M tape backing. You can mount it permanently or attach the mount to the transparent window cling included in the box. I used the later. You can connent the unit to the Cobra Drive Smarter App if you want to as well. I loaded the app to try it out, but did not really use it much. The app will allow you to change some settings on the unit (most of which can be changed on the unit itself), gives you map turn by turn directions along with your current location and speed. There is a subscription that allows you to have access to a community database of speed cameras, police locations from other detectors, and lists posted speed limits. It's $5/month after the free trial. Most of these functions my car or phone navigation already does for me and the Community features rely on people manually marking locations for it to work. I know I wouldn't take the time to mark locations while driving, so I figured that wasn't going to be useful. The App is also CarPlay compatible. Honestly, other than the initial setup, I ignored the app completely and won't be signing up for another subscription. I took a road trip between my houses, 300 miles round trip, to test the unit out. It worked well. False alerts were minimal although not completely eliminated (it really goes nuts when driving past Walmarts for some reason). I got a few alerts in the middle of nowhere for no apparent reason, but it was drastically improved over my previous experiences. I saw two speed traps on my drive and the unut it trigger a mile or so before coming across hte police car (both K band signals), so it seems to work fo rit's intended function on the highway. The only adjustment I had to make was to turn off the voice function. After 30 minutes my wife threateded to jump out of the car if she had to listen to it one more time. In town, the alerts were a lot more common and I never saw a police car. I ended up not using it in city driving. There was just too many triggers. On the highway through, it was great. I've enjoyed using the 490i. It seems to do the job on the highway where I needed the help and speeding was more likely. The unit is solid with lots of options in the settings. It's easy to adjust. The mount works great and it's quick release is a nice feature. I've since bought a suction cup mount to make moving it between cars easier. Downsides are it does trigger a lot in town and it asks you to use another app with subscription. My recommendation is to buy the unit and ignore the app.

I want to start off my honest review by making it abundantly clear that I am no racer or Need for Speed driver. I am honestly just a guy who drives an older, lifted Tacoma and commutes to work every day on the same roads in a town of about 86,000 people. However, we are ridiculously oversaturated with the most uptight law enforcement officers this side of the Rocky Mountains, and I am certain that some rule must be continuously violated by them, given the number of random speed traps, speed vans, and cameras they have been putting up relative to the population in my area. Unlike some more permissive states, these traffic enforcement cops are literally pulling people over for going less than 5 or 8 miles per hour over the speed limit, even in non-residential backcountry areas with speed limits of 45 to 55 miles per hour. These are the same speed limits as when the roads were single-lane, poorly paved, with tractors and cattle on them. Now, the same speed limits, but two lanes, more traffic, and way too many speed traps. With all that background, I was extremely excited to get this Cobra RAD 490i Radar and laser detector for my truck. I have it mounted on the dash, and thanks to the handy USB-C power system (a must, in my opinion, for vehicle accessories in 2026), I was able to get this powered up and working with no problems. Now I feel I am truly able to take a more proactive approach on my commutes. I am catching both K and Ka alerts easily on the high-sensitivity setting, and, again, while I am no racer, I do sometimes go a little faster than the signs may indicate when I have no one around me on dry roads. The peace of mind I have now with this system cannot be understated. I really like the easy-to-see OLED screen that has a little status bar flashing back and forth while idle and powered on, so at a quick glance, I can tell that this is powered on and working. I respect how sensitive this detector is because I am also picking up modern vehicles' blind-spot monitoring radar signals (usually K alerts). I would turn this setting off, but because there are still speed traps and cameras that use K band radar, so I am leaving it on for now. I do love the auto-mute function that, after the initial loud alert tones, reduces the volume of the ongoing alert so I don’t have to reach over and manually mute it while I have my hands on the wheel. Altogether, I have no criticisms to offer. This detector is doing exactly what it is advertised to do and I have already been able to slow down a few times in some corners where a patrol car or speed trap van just happens to have set up out of eyeshot from a distance. I would recommend you look into this detector and compare it to other Cobra offerings in the lineup, but this one was simple enough even for a novice like me to set up. Thanks for reading and I hope it helps!

Thanks for the detailed review! We're glad to hear the RAD 490i was easy to set up and is giving you some extra peace of mind on the road. Picking up some K-band alerts from modern vehicle systems is normal, especially on higher sensitivity settings. Try adjusting the sensitivity based on your driving environment and habits to help reduce them. We appreciate you choosing Cobra and stay safe out there!

I recently started using the Cobra RAD 490i Radar & Laser Detector as I spend a decent amount of time on the road and want an additional layer of protection. I haven't used a radar detector in years and was a bit sceptical if it would be worth the investment. It proved its worth on the very first road trip! Previous detectors I had used were decent in providing alerts for the road ahead, but the rear of the vehicle seemed to always be an afterthought. With the RAD 490i's front and rear LIDAR, they make sure there are alerts ahead...and creeping up from the rear! I was on a highway driving the speed limit and an alert went off so I kept an eye out for a trap up ahead...well it turns out there was an unmarked vehicle coming up from behind that had used laser to check my speed. The rear alert was very timely and impressive! Set Up: The RAD 490i is ready to be installed straight out of the box, so it's simple to connect and get going for anyone. It includes a mounting bracket, cigarette lighter adapter, USB-C cable, static cling disk for easy mounting and the radar detector. There are adjustments for sensitivity, display brightness and volume. Simply mount it where you want it, plug in the cable and you're ready to hit the road. Real World Usage: The RAD 490i is very low profile and does not distract while driving. Everything is black which matches my car interiro really well and keeps it less conspicuous. The unit can quickly be removed from the mounting bracket with the push of a button so it can be hidden out of sight while the car is parked. One of the feartures that was a real improvment over older models I've used is the voice alert added to the alerts. The voice is easy to hear and understand even with the windows rolled down or in a louder cabin environment. Additionally, the integration with the Drive Smarter community is a great feature that steps up the 490i's value in my opinion. I've always been a big fan of the crowd sharing approach, so this is a nice addition to the radar detector environment. Pros: - Low-profile design and easy to install in any vehicle - Easy setup and good adjustability - Real world proven Rear LIDAR detection - App integration with the Drive Smarter community - Addition of voice alerts to the warning system - USB-C cable so no need for a proprietary power cord Overall I'm very impressed with the RAD 490i's features and real world capabilites and would certainly recommend it to anyone looking to add an additional layer of security on the go.

I recently picked up the Cobra RAD 490i to add some peace of mind to my time on the road, and after putting it through its paces on a couple of extended road trips, it has absolutely delivered. If you spend a lot of time driving open highways or dealing with heavy traffic, this unit is a fantastic copilot. Setup & Build Quality: Out of the box, the unit feels incredibly solid and well-made. The included windshield mount holds perfectly without any slipping or vibration, keeping the display right in your line of sight. It’s compact enough that it doesn’t clutter up the dash, but the white OLED display is bright, crisp, and exceptionally easy to read at a quick glance, even in direct sunlight. Audio Performance & Signal Strength: One of my absolute favorite things about this detector is the strength and clarity of the audio. On a recent 4+ hour continuous stretch on the open road, I was worried that highway wind and heavy background road noise would drown out the alerts. However, the voice and tone alerts are incredibly sharp and punchy. They cut right through cabin noise and passing traffic effortlessly, so you never miss a warning. Advanced Filtering & Range: The false-alert filtering on the 490i is impressive. Thanks to the updated IVT filter, it does a wonderful job of ignoring the annoying blind-spot monitoring sensors and collision-avoidance systems from other vehicles on the road. When it does go off, you can trust it's a real threat. The advanced digital signal processing gives you plenty of early warning, picking up signals well before you are right on top of them, giving you more than enough time to check your speedometer. Integration: The app integration adds a whole new level of real-time intelligence. Connecting it to the Drive Smarter network gives you shared radar data from other drivers down the road, and having it play nicely with vehicle displays makes tracking threats seamless. Pros: Exceptional long-range detection with plenty of advanced warning. Strong, clear audio alerts that easily punch through loud background road noise. Reliable, stable mounting and consistent performance over long 2+ hour drives. Highly effective anti-falsing circuitry keeps the ride quiet until it matters. Cons: The power cord is a bit stiff initially, but it settles down fine once routed cleanly along the dash. Bottom Line: The Cobra RAD 490i strikes the perfect balance between high-end sensitivity and smart filtering. It's reliable, easy to operate, and gives you the exact heads-up you need to stay aware and protected on the open highway. Worth every penny!

I’ve only used a couple radar detectors over my many years of driving. The Cobra RAD 490i has made a really good first impression. Installation only took a few minutes. You can stick it to the windshield wherever you are most comfortable and it detaches easily from the clip that remains attached for when you are putting it back into place. Also, I like that it gives you the option of powering it either with the included 12-volt adapter or through a USB connection, which makes it easier to fit different vehicle setups. The display is bright and easy to read, and the voice alerts make it simple to know what’s being detected without having to take your eyes off the road. It covers the major radar and laser bands, and during my very first drive it proved that it works. The detector alerted me to radar when the police were still about two blocks away, giving me plenty of advance warning before I even got close enough to see them sitting off to the side of the road. That kind of early detection is exactly what I was hoping for. I also appreciate that the alerts aren’t confusing. The detector identifies the type of signal it’s picking up, and the audible alerts can be controlled via the volume dial on the side so that you can hear with the radio playing. The controls are straightforward, so I didn’t have to spend much time reading through the manual before I felt comfortable using it. Like any radar detector, it’s not a license to speed, and no detector can guarantee it will catch every signal. Instant-on radar and laser can still be difficult for any detector to warn against. But for everyday driving, this unit provides an extra layer of awareness that I find helpful. Additionally, there is a companion app called “Drive Smarter” that can be used as your GPS and will also alert you to speed traps, red light cameras and other hazards very similar to Waze as it is also crowd sourced. The app can also be used with various dash cams to help with recording management. Overall, I’m very happy with the Cobra RAD 490i. It’s easy to install, simple to use, and based on my experience so far, it offers impressive detection range. If you’re looking for a dependable radar detector without spending a fortune, this is a solid choice.

SUMMARY UP FRONT: This is a pretty good device. You can tell Cobra has been in this business for a long time. The detector is very logically organized and seems to have everything covered. The unit is fairly compact and easily mountable. The documentation is great and easily downloadable (although there is no printed quick start guide). The web site is also well organized and provides a lot of information. I am also pleased that they advertise that the software/firmware will be updated. I am generally not a fan of downloading superfluous apps to my phone, but the Drive Smarter app does appear valuable for providing community alerts (red light cameras, speed traps, etc.) from other users and it synchronizes with the device easily. Mounting and installation was easy, but I do wish that they supplied a suction cup mount. The supplied electrostatic mount does work, but a suction mount would allow for more repetitive removal in order to hide that you may have a device such as this hidden in your car. Cobra sells suction cup mounts, but they are too pricey IMHO. However, you can buy one (and there are aftermarket ones available). This played a pretty big role in knocking a star off. Another contributing factor in knocking off a star is that I felt there were a bit too many false alarms. It wasn't too annoying, but it seemed I received a lot of them when I know police activity wasn't present. I will say that when I did encounter a radar, the signal and alert was much stronger than the false alarms. But could those many false (albeit weak) alarms contribute to complacency? So with the false alarms and what I consider inferior mounting, I just could not give this five stars. Between the strong alert I did receive (and the confidence I would get them in the future), the community alerts, the easy set up and great documentation/web site, I have no qualms about a 4, and would probably go to 4.5 if I could - especially because I believe the value is pretty decent for the protection you are getting. Also of note, there are no subscription fees which makes me want to go 4.75 stars! DETAILS: SET-UP: • The packaging was fine, but there is no printed quick start guide or owner's manual (OM). A cardboard page with a QR code is there that you scan for more detailed setup instructions. • I understand not having a detailed paper OM, but not having a printed QSG is lacking. • There is a link to a 18 page PDF OM which I downloaded easily. • There are also links for configuring, downloading the Drive Smarter App, and good troubleshooting/support available. • Included in the box is the unit, a Type C USB cable, a 12-24VDC cigarette lighter adapter with a 5V 2.0A output (10W Max), and a mounting bracket that has a 3M adhesive to affix to the windshield. ○ There is also an electrostatic film that, according to the product page "enables clean, residue-free installation and removal of the windshield bracket making it easy to mount your radar detector securely and remove it". ○ There is a safety and warranty leaflet (1 year warranty) ○ I would prefer a bracket with some sort of suction cup / plunger so that you can remove the unit / bracket more easily for use in other vehicles and to hide it. § I discovered that there are suction mounts (as well as other accessories) for purchase. But I believe the cost is too pricey for a piece of plastic. □ In fairness, there are aftermarket suction cup mounts that are readily available however. • The OM does appear to be robust and includes "information about how radar and laser guns are used and how you can interpret the alerts you receive." ○ The OM describes the features which I liked. These include § It detects all radar and laser guns both front and rear § Reduces false alarms and has various sensitivity modes § Connects to an app to view shared radar/laser alerts, red light / speed cameras and live police activity § Voice alerts that can be muted § Allows software / firmware updates ○ It is excellent to have that info for people that are unfamiliar with these devices • I found the web site excellent. There is great information on the web site, including Specs, FAQs, and a testing white paper with great details. • INSTALLATION: • This was very simple You just attach the electrostatic film to the windshield. Remove the adhesive film from the bracket, attach the bracket to the film, and then slide the detector into the slot on the bracket. Align the unit, then turn the knob to tighten and loosen. Then plug the USB power cord into the detector and the cigarette lighter adapter. ○ But as mentioned above - although this mounting is secure, moving this unit between cars with this is not practical. ○ Also, many removals to hide any hints that you have a radar detector in your car is also not practical. • I appreciated the USB-C power adapter on the device instead of some proprietary "barrel" type one. I do wish the cigarette lighter adapter had two USB ports, but that is not a deal breaker. • OPERATION/CONFIGURATION • The manual is very clear on how to operate and configure the device. The settings seem impressive. There are too many to mention but they include: ○ Different sensitivity modes including an auto mode which adjusts the sensitivity based on your speed - which is handy for mixed driving. § Note you must be connected to the app for this to work. ○ Volume settings and adjustments ○ Alert settings for the different bands and Laser (although not sure why you'd want to toggler any of them off). ○ I received a very strong alert when I did encounter a real world radar device ○ However, I also received many false alerts. I did try playing around with the various settings, but in my real world driving, I did feel that these were numerous. § They were thankfully not as strong as the real alert, but I do worry that complacency about them may lead to not slowing down in a real event. § I found that false alerts on the K-band were the most egregious. ○ The small screen on the unit was very good. I increased the brightness to the highest setting in bright daylight, and that made it very easy to read. • The DRIVER SMARTER APP: • The Driver Smarter App was easy to find and install on my Android phone • They require you to register a new account. I wish this wasn't the case. • The navigation function is ok, but I found myself missing my "regular" navigation apps. • The app did provide pretty good community alerts such as red light cameras. I was appreciative of that • However, even though it provides navigation, I will probably want to switch to my "regular" driving app for navigating. Will that cause me to miss something? Not sure. OVERALL BOTTOM LINE: • I can easily recommend the Cobra 490i. It seems robust and I am confident it will alert me to real world radar/laser given the one I encountered and the testing white paper Cobra has posted on their web site. The device is easy to set up and Cobra provides great information that is logically provided on their web site. However, I am not enamored with the supplied mounting system and will need to buy a suction cup mount. I also found there were too many false alerts. So this is a solid 4….and maybe a 4.5, but it is not perfect - therefore I cannot go to 5 stars.

As a long time radar detector enthusiast, I was really excited to try out something new and on the more entry level side. I personally have primarily relied on a single brand for many years I consider the "one" and only choice when it comes to radar detection (pun intended). In the last 15 years the radar detector market has evolved immensely and there are a variety of options that span a very wide price point range. If there's one thing to take away from this review: Most radar detectors and companies are selling you gimmicks and a ton of random things that seem very beneficial but aren't. Notably over the last 15 years is the immense price jumps in the top end, which used to cap out around $400-500 now approaches $700. Granted, every time you almost could have gotten a speeding ticket amounts to a quick return on investment. For the first time buyer: I think it's reasonable to go cheap and get something entry level like this or go with a specific high end "one" that costs $600. The key is to understand the basics of the tech, its limitations, and paying attention on the road. Setup: They include a window adhesive mount only and uncharge a suction mount. This is a huge miss. The portability of the detector is key since many people have multiple cars. I am glad they went with USB and include a 12v adaptor. After getting it up in the car, the rest is just tweaking the settings to your preference (adjust over time) and downloading the app if you wish. App: Not great, cool to have, can be glitchy and disconnect without you knowing. Where I primarily tested this radar, I don't need something like Google or Apple Maps constantly to reroute me around traffic. In bigger cities this would be a problem because I can't imagine this being as good as other apps for navigation so you'll lose the detection and alert features. Overall, as great as this is (which is also seen on many other more expensive detectors), I don't see the appeal. Detection: I went ahead and did a side-by-side with my high end detector. Overall, it's about 80% on par and having forward and rear detection is impressive at this level. If you are smart and pay attention, you're going to be good. Its range is good enough for detecting most threats. It did not fair as well is instant on that I encountered a couple of times during testing (this detection mode by LEOs varies based on location). I only encountered one laser and it was just a few seconds later in detection. The problem is that laser is highly effective and hard to detect farther and no spread. Overall, you're going to have a big improvement on hoping for the best without a radar detector. False Alerts: quite high, especially in K band. This can be very annoying to most people, I typically just mute them when I know what I'm likely encountering. Ka band falses occurred which is annoying because you have to take them seriously. Overall: If you are limiting your budget and want to get in to the market, I would recommend this. You can try it out, familiarize yourself with the radar detection world, and then upgrade later.

Thank you so much for the great feedback! We appreciate you sharing your thoughts and how it performed in real-world testing. One thing worth noting is that running two radar detectors side by side is not recommended, as it can interfere with performance. If you are experiencing K-band falses, adjusting the sensitivity will help reduce them. For the Drive Smarter app, if you’re seeing disconnects, clearing the cache and then deleting and reinstalling it can often resolve those issues and improve stability. Thank you again for the detailed feedback and we truly appreciate the recommendation. Take care!

I want to get the biggest negative out of the way: The sticky on this failed after two days, having to fiddle with something on your windscreen every time you get in the car is annoying, and after it failed completely I'm left with a radar detector that can't be properly mounted. The radar detector itself is good, solid. I last used one about 20 years ago and this feels like a respectable upgrade to that, not light years ahead but using the latest silicon to offer a modern version. It has a smart phone integration that will enable CarPlay and AndroidAuto to display notifications. In theory that should be great, I find the app itself to not be the most useful though as Waze or Google maps have millions of drivers including thousands in the towns I drive through while the Cobra app had literally just me -- crowd sourcing traffic info only works if there is a crows and between Apple and the two Google (waze is owned by Google) map apps its tough to get the market penetration to make the app really useful. This becomes a bigger pain when you realize that the app must be up on your phone in order to get any notifications from the 490i in the infotainment system - which means you have to be playing around with your phone before you start driving, to run an app on your car -- I don't need to do the same thing for spotify, pandora, waze, google maps, zoom or anything else that I use on my car, i'm not sure why I can't pull the app up from the car and leave my phone on the wireless charger. Overall, the hardware is great, and the package with the app is a great concept, but probably missed the window to grab user share by 15 years and has some clunkiness. If you're looking for a radar detector its certainly a great option but overall I was left underwhelmed

To sum it all up, if you need a radar detector for a road trip and you're pretty much within the realms of just making sure you're not going to get a ticket out of nowhere, I think this is it. The radar does what it needs of grabbing signals but if you need something more "intense" you're better off saving more money for something better. You can adjust the sensitivity in this radar and I find that driving around the city or town with the sensitivity on extreme or high is no good. I find that it keeps giving out alerts constantly with that high of a setting but keeping it on medium allowed me to drive around without too many alerts. That being said, you get a lot of false alerts on those higher settings around town so that's not a good thing at all. The app integration is good but I find that Cobra's app feels clunky to use for me, but it's there if you want to use the extra features on this radar. The build quality is good but it's definitely cheaped out a bit with the USB cable and the mount itself, but I find that it's sturdy enough so that it wouldn't fall with some shakes. The radar itself is plastic but it doesn't feel too cheap.

Thank you for your valuable feedback! Extreme mode or high sensitivity is typically not recommended for city or urban driving, so your note about adjusting the sensitivity is spot on. We definitely recommend dialing it down in those conditions. We’re sorry to hear you’re not completely satisfied with the power cable and mount. The overall goal is a simple, reliable setup, and we do also offer an optional suction mount if that’s a better fit for your needs. Our Drive Smarter app is continuously improving as we grow, and we appreciate you sharing your experience. We’ll be sure to pass your feedback along to the team. Thanks again for choosing Cobra, and stay safe out there!

About a week into using this radar detector I would say that it works great and integrates well into Apple CarPlay. Out of the box, it is easy to setup and install. I didn't want to do a permanent installation in my car, and I use it in two different cars, so I ordered the suction cup bracket accessory through Cobra's site. The suction installation attaches very easily to the windshield. The detector itself is extremely light so it doesn't pull the suction cups off the windshield and it snaps into place with a small release button. This is nice, as a previous version did not snap in and would slide off sometimes, as well as the single suction cup not holding onto the windshield because of the heavier weight. Once you plug it in you can download the app and it will pair to your radar device. I watched a short video from Cobra that walked through the settings and how you can change the sensitivity. I left it as is and just adjust the volume from the side of the detector. Once the app is installed you will find the Drive Smarter app on your CarPlay and can use it to navigate. When the alarm goes off you can choose to lock out that signal or mark it as police spotted. If you mark it with police spotted it is supposed to help warn other drivers using the app. Within 2 miles of using this detector the Ka band alert went off and I found a police car hiding beside a building, so I was impressed with that. The best thing about using this app is that there is no subscription fee. Previous versions required you to pay monthly or annually to get the alerts from other drivers. However, on the downside, I haven't seen any alerts posted from other drivers yet, so I'm not sure how many people are using the app and marking the hazards. I haven't driven on the interstate yet to check it there. Another nice function is that when you find an alert that you know is not the police you can lock that signal out. For example, automated doors at grocery stores and the signs that monitor your speed on the side of the road set off the K-band alert but you can lock the exact signal and location out so that the alarm doesn't go off next time. While this works pretty well, I think the location it uses might be too precise because often the alarm will go off again the next time I drive by. I'm still trying to figure out why that happens. Overall, this is a high quality radar detector that is easy to use and works well with the app and with CarPlay.

It's great to hear you're enjoying features like the Drive Smarter app, community alerts, and signal lockouts. If a locked-out signal alerts again later, it can sometimes be caused by slight changes in the signal frequency. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, and we're happy to hear the RAD 490i has been a solid addition to your drives. Thanks for choosing Cobra!

The Cobra RAD 490i is an excellent radar detector for those looking for an affordable option that still performs incredibly well. After using it for an entire week driving to the office, plus a one-hour drive Saturday night from an event, I have been very happy with the performance and the features you get. The range at which it detects bands is impressive, giving you plenty of time to react. Most of the time, I left the sensitivity on "Auto." This option only appears via the Drive Smarter app. From here, you can adjust several settings, and it also has its own map for GPS directions. The map is very basic compared to Google Maps or Apple Maps; it doesn't provide real-time traffic, but it works well alongside the RAD 490i to display bands located and reported by other Cobra users, kind of like how Waze works. You can still use the app to receive notifications for detected bands via your phone, along with spoken voice notifications while using Google or Apple Maps for navigation. I highly recommend downloading the app. It makes it much easier to adjust the settings, especially to filter out bands if you’re getting too many false alerts caused by modern safety features like blind-spot detection. One of my favorite features has to be the power cord, which is now a USB-C cable. My last radar detector was probably from 8–10 years ago. I only used it when driving for an extended period because it required sacrificing a cigarette lighter port. Now, I can just use the same cord I use to charge my phone to power it on. As for the unit itself, the overall size is on the smaller side. I have mine located right below the rearview mirror. The OLED display at this level is easy to read quickly, minimizing distractions from the road. It is very bright during the day and can display your current speed, the type of band being detected, and its signal strength. Overall, for the price and the features you get in return, I’m very happy with how the Cobra RAD 490i performed. It brings some great modern upgrades like a bright OLED display, a USB-C port for power, and seamless syncing with the Drive Smarter app to manage your settings.

It has been a very long time since I’ve had a radar detector. When the Cobra 490i popped up, I thought I’d give it a try again, especially at its price-point. I am a very aware driver, but I do have a tendency to have a heavy foot. I still hear my Mom, in my head, getting on my case about that. I live about 20 minutes from downtown Las Vegas, in a dense suburban neighborhood. Most of my driving is on streets, with occasional freeway driving. The 490i was very easy to set up. I downloaded the Drive Smarter app to my Android phone and connected the detector via the USB port in my car. Upon starting my car, my car’s display prompted me to open the app on my phone. The detector and app seemed to integrate pretty well with Android Auto. Frequently using Android Auto, the first thing I noticed was that the map did not offer a satellite view. It’s a view I’m very use to and like. I haven’t had a lot of time to use the 490i, but here are my impressions of its functionality so far. Down the hill from my home, there is a radar speed sign. The 490i detected and alerted me to it in what seemed about 300 feet away. My car display displayed the alert and gave me an option of 2 buttons, confirm police or “lock out”. When I ended my drive, I looked up what “lock out” means. If you select this option it will make note in the app, using GPS coordinates, to exclude this spot from alerting me again. Very cool feature. Along my drive, on city streets, I did not receive any alerts. I drove past numerous stores and businesses, a lot of which have automatic doors. So far, the 490i is functioning as anticipated. During my drive, I also received a phone call. The Android Auto phone controls popped up as they normally do. Same with text messages. One Android Auto feature that did not work well at all was asking Google to give me directions to a specific location, while I’m driving. This a very helpful feature of Android Auto. With the Drive Smarter app integration, I could hear Google go through the motions, but the directions never popped up on screen. I had to pull over to see what was going on. It seems the Drive Smarter app has its own navigation. You have to press the search button on the screen, where you can type (if not driving) or speak your request again. One time this worked. Another time it did not work, never completing the request and showing me directions. In my book, this is a really big negative for the 490i. On my drive home, I decided to take the freeway back. Because of this, I decided to set the sensitivity to Auto. All seemed fine until the detector randomly alerted a K band warning. I was not in an area where there was a lot of businesses along the either side of the freeway. I also did not see any cops around. I have no idea what it was picking up on. Heading back up the hill to my house, it alerted again on the radar speed sign. This time I pressed the “lock out” button, once about 50 feet before the sign, then it popped up again about 50 feet past the sign. I’ve driven a couple more times than what I have already mentioned. Nothing worth noting happened, except that the sensitivity setting always reverts back to Medium. I always set it to Auto and upon checking the setting again, it always reverts back to Medium. I’m not sure why this setting won’t stay. During my short time in using the 490i, I have yet to encounter an actual cop with a radar gun. However, my experience so far leaves me very unenthusiastic about this radar detector. I think the Drive Smart app is only half way there with the Android Auto integration and the random alert I received makes me skeptical. Now that I have it, I may just use this radar detector without the app and only on road trips.

Thanks so much for the valuable feedback! We’re glad to hear you’re enjoying the features and the Android Auto integration. Drive Smarter does include navigation, but running two navigation apps at the same time can sometimes cause interference. If you prefer, you can simply let Drive Smarter run in the background instead. We appreciate your input and are always working to improve the overall app experience. As a note, not all officers may be running radar and must be in use in order for the detector to alert. Stay safe out there, and thanks for choosing Cobra!

The Cobra - RAD 490i Radar and Laser Detector is from Cedar Electronics which also manufactures the Escort brand. They have been making radar detectors since mid-80’s. I have several models from them including an Escort MaxCam 360c (which looks surprisingly much like the original X-band Escort) and the Escort Passport X70 which sounds like an interesting vacation. All of them are capable, including the latest Cobra RAD 490i. However, once you start talking radar detectors, features and quality components become key attributes as they usually lead to better real world performance. The Cobra RAD 490i is the entry level detector, updated with some 2026 tech including smartphone integration. Speaking of Smartphone integration Escort/Cobra’s Drive smarter mobile app is used in conjunction with CarPlay and Android Auto app to lend a hand to this simple radar detector. If you desire, the Drive Smarter app can be used with either smartphone car casting app to provide navigation and other “enforcement alerts”. Just ensure you only allow the app location services while using the app (companies don’t need to have data on your every move, even when not using their products). The smart app integration helps with configuring the device, including X, K and Ka band detection configuration, display and of course firmware updates. As an entry level radar detector you can’t expect the best performance or false alert filtering and the RAD 490i shows that in real world use. The false alerting is a concern here and in populated areas and with noisy lane avoidance systems on other vehicles (Honda/Acura and GM products seem to be the worst for being “spectrum noisy”) it can be challenging to know what real alerts are and are not. For familiar drives this is less of an issue, but for unfamiliar drives it can become anxiety inducing. Also, without built-in GPS you can’t mark areas of interest without using the Drive Smarter app. What I do like is the old-fashioned volume control and on/off wheel. For windshield mounting a simple mount which slides and locks into a slot at the top of the radar detector is provided, However the mount has a permanent windshield adhesive patch which it not most conducive to quick no sight removal of the detector. A suction cup option included in the box would be a better choice other being an optional, extra purchase item. Overall, for a entry level radar detector it is satisfactory, however you may start to ignore the alerting due to the volume of false alerts, especially in an suburban/urban environments. >>> Pros >> reasonably priced >> leading manufacturer >> decent display, with scanning indicator >> smartphone AND Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration >> Drive Smarter App <<< Cons << many false signals, although band configuration and sensitivity settings help reduce those a bit << no rear facing antenna, only front facing (laser detection is back and front).

Thanks for the detailed review. We appreciate the feedback! We're glad to hear you're enjoying the performance overall and the added CarPlay/Android Auto feature via our Drive Smarter app. We understand your concerns around false alerts in busier areas. Adjusting the sensitivity can help reduce them. The included adhesive mount is meant for a more secure setup, but temporary installation films are included to help provide a less permanent install. A suction cup mount is also available separately if you prefer something more flexible. Thanks again for sharing your experience and take care!
