Drahla - Useless Coordinates - VINYL LP

Vinyl LP pressing. Leeds-formed Drahla have de ned their own vital subset of art-rock with Useless Coordinates, a debut album that's as fearless as it is enthralling. Speaking from her current base in south-east London with bassist Rob Riggs, singer/guitarist Luciel Brown recounts the record's somewhat chaotic gestation. InchMost of last year was spent touring, so we were squeezing writing and recording in from the beginning of 2018 until end of August.Inch In-between a headline tour, support slots with Ought and METZ, and multiple festival appearances - including at Meltdown at the request of The Cure's Robert Smith - Brown, Riggs and Wakefield-based drummer Mike Ainsley managed 10 days in the studio in total. It was the unsettled nature of the period that part-inspired the album's title. Inch[Use- less Coordinates] summarised all of our situations,Inch Brown explains. The set's sharp angles, stark tones and claustrophobic textures are reflected in the album's artwork. Designed by Brown and Riggs - as per all previous record sleeves and promotional videos - the minimalist, mixed media creation takes inspiration from Talking Heads and Gang Of Four album art, the work of American artist Cy Twombly, and the economical, regimented aesthetic of the Bauhaus movement. InchDrahla came about off the back of needing an outlet for creative expression,Inch Brown explains. InchSo the whole aesthetic is hugely important. As important as the music.Inch Whatever the medium, Brown's interests lie in looking beyond the immediate to the abstract and indefinable. Her lyrics are developed from observations, notes and poems, and the fragmented imagery is spliced together to disorientating effect. On Gilded Cloud elegant snapshots from the golden age of Hollywood are juxtaposed with abrasive guitar textures, Pyramid Estate draws parallels between Ancient Egypt and the present day, and Sere

Jeremy Dutcher - Motewolonuwok - VINYL LP

Five years after winning the Polaris Music Prize with his ground-breaking debut, Jeremy Dutcher has returned with a radiant exploration of contemporary Indigeneity and his place within it. With songs performed in his people's Wolasotqey language but also, for the first time, in English, Motewolonuwok extends beyond anything the musician has made before, encompassing traditional song, starlit ballads and staggering orchestrations. InchWith my first record, the concept was so clear, so complete,Inch Dutcher says. This time, InchI wanted [to make an LP] that wasn't always so sure of itself.InchWolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, released in 2018, vaulted Dutcher into the upper echelons of Canadian performance, from the Polaris and Juno Award stages to the judges' panel on Canada's Drag Race. The follow-up is more intimate, more personal, inspired by his growing understanding of the Inchmiddle spaceInch of being Two Spirit-Indigenous and queer. In the Wolasotqey language, Two Spirit people are called InchmotewolonuwokInch-Inchthe people of great spiritual powerInch-an identity filled with strength and knowledge, which is not dogged by shame. Dutcher came out as gay when he was 12-but even that idea, of Inchcoming out,Inch was imposed upon him by a colonialist framework. Motewolonuwok is a stepping-through and singing-into his full identity. On Inch'tahcuwi Anelsultipon,Inch Dutcher stands almost alone on a stage, singing about devotion. InchThe Land That Held Them,Inch his tribute to Inchthe ones taken too soon,Inch shudders with a force that recalls Nina Simone and Anohni. Elsewhere, Dutcher reached for the largest possible frame a full orchestra, with arrangements by Owen Pallett, and, on tracks like InchSakom,Inch a 12-voice choir made up of Dutcher's queer and allied kin, including friends from music school and members of the Queer Songbook Orchestra.1. Jeremy Dutcher - Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa - VINYL LP

Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa is the debut album by Canadian composer and tenor, Jeremy Dutcher - which involves post-classical rearrangementof his Wolastoq First Nation traditional music. Granted access to the Canadian Museum of History, Jeremy discovered wax cylinders from 1907of his ancestors singing forgotten songs and stories that had been taken from the Wolastoqiyik Nation generations ago. The album is Jeremy's contribution to his heritage and community in attempts to revitalize the Wolastoq language to the world, which has less than 100 speakers from birth alive today. This collection of ground breaking post-classical arrangements is truly one of a kind and recalls the mood of Rufus Wainwright's operatic performance or the haunting pop ofAnthony & The Johnsons.1.
